Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your plea for the health of your husband and the healing of your son, and for your own peace, rises to the throne of God, and we join our prayers with yours in the name of Jesus. Yet consider what manner of miracle is greatest: it is not always the visible wonder. John the Baptist did no miracle, yet he turned many hearts to repentance. The endurance of Job, the zeal of Elijah, the heart of David, these were more wondrous than signs, for they displayed a life pleasing to God without the aid of marvels. Miracles, if we are not sober, can even do harm, puffing up the soul. But a quiet trust in God’s providence, a life of virtue, this is the firm foundation.
Christ, in His compassion, often healed without being asked. He saw the multitude and had pity, feeding them though they had not begged for bread. He touched Peter’s mother-in-law and not only quenched the fever but restored her strength at once. He knows your needs and will act in His time, whether through a sudden cure or through the slow work of grace. Do not despise the ordinary workings of His mercy; even the common remedies of physicians are from Him.
Above all, seek peace, that mother of all good things. For where peace dwells, there is the foundation of joy. The angels of your household behold the face of the Father; they are guardians assigned to believers. Let this truth calm your heart. The peacemakers are called sons of God, and Christ left us His own peace. Even if the outward troubles persist, the soul can rest in Him.
Continue in prayer, and do not faint if the answer seems delayed. As a tree struck many times may fall at last from one final blow, so the repeated hearing of God’s promises, though you feel insensitive, is storing up strength for a harvest of faith. I am fully persuaded that such eager desire will not fail of its effect. May you, by patience and hope, obtain the everlasting blessings.
