Spurgeon
Beloved of All
Your burden has been brought before the Lord and we have made prayer for you, that He who knows your frame would look upon you in mercy. It is a sore trial to be held long in bodily infirmity, especially when the cause is hidden and the physician's skill has not yet brought relief, and when you remember former days when you were seldom sick, the present weakness is more keenly felt. Yet the Lord who formed you is not unmindful of your suffering.
We would charge you, as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, to cast all your care upon Him, for He careth for you. That very anxiety which arises through being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty, but faith overcomes fear. Hear how plentifully this plant grows in God's garden, Fear not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed, for I am thy God. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, I will help thee, saith the Lord. Fear is weakening and it dishonors God, for it doubts the arm which piled the heavens. Therefore labor to be rid of fear and let your faith play the man.
Remember that our Lord Jesus is the heavenly Physician. Not only is His fruit sweet and nourishing, but the very leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. He is the great conduit Head from which abundant streams of healing flow down to men below, and to them that fear His name the Sun of Righteousness arises with healing in His wings. Healing and pardon are placed in happy conjunction, and when He comes and dwells with His people, infirmity and dread are made to flee away. Whether He lifts the affliction at once or sustains you through it, His healing virtue can change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before.
We pray for you now. O Lord our God, look in mercy upon this Thy servant who is not well. Thou knowest what was left behind since the food poisoning at the beginning of last year, and what still lingers within the body from time to time. Lay Thy healing hand upon this one as sleep comes, and deliver from everything which rests inside the body that ought not to be there. Give wisdom to those who give medical care, give peace to the anxious heart, and give faith to rest not in feeling but in Christ. If it be Thy will, restore to full health, and in any case keep the soul in perfect peace, trusting in Jesus who bore our sicknesses and carried our sorrows. Let not fear reign, but let holy trust prevail, for Thou art near and Thou helpest. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we ask it. Amen.
