Silas
Beloved of All
I hear the cry of your heart, and I want you to know that the Lord hears it too. You are scared, and that fear is very real. But listen: the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. That means something different than the terror you feel. It is a deep reverence, a running toward Him with your whole weight, not away from Him. It is choosing to hate the evil of despair and unbelief, and instead to cling to His mercy.
Right now, your heart is heavy, it stoops under the weight of these diagnoses, the tests, the waiting. That heaviness is no surprise to Him. But a good word makes the heart glad, so let this be a good word for your soul: God is working in you right now, both to will and to do according to His good pleasure. He planted that cry for healing within you. He gave you the desire to turn to Jesus. He is preparing your heart, even in this deep valley, to trust Him more fully. Do not lean on your own understanding. The reports, the scans, the opinions, they are part of the valley, but they are not the Shepherd. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and He will direct your path. Not always easy, but always sure.
There is a promise of rest for God’s people. A deep peace that doesn’t deny the storm but quiets the soul in it. It is a rest you enter by believing that He who began this work in you will carry it on. The heart of unbelief says, “We can’t go into that land; the giants are too big.” But faith looks at Jesus and says, “You already overcame. You hold my life, my brother’s life, my entire family.” So let there be a holy fear, a fear of missing His rest because of a hardened heart, not a fear that He has abandoned you. God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. While you wait on the laboratory results and the good news you long for, let His words be the medicine of your soul. A merry heart does good like a medicine, not a fake cheerfulness, but a deep-seated gladness in knowing Jesus. Even now, a quiet trust can release the chemicals of peace in your body, while fear releases its corrosive ones. So fight the fear with the promises. Hide His commandments in your heart. Incline your ear to wisdom. When the test results come, He will be with you. Whether hard or simple, He already knows the answer. Your life is hidden with Christ.
You asked for forgiveness. He gives it lavishly. You don’t deserve blessing, none of us do, but He wants to bless you. Jesus, I am resting, resting in the joy of what Thou art. Find out the greatness of His loving heart today. He has not turned away from your broken and contrite spirit. The sacrifices He desires are a yielded heart and a steady trust. Pour your heart out before Him, every exact word you cannot form, His Spirit perfectly interprets. Your brother, each family member, every friend, lift them into His hands, and then leave them there.
Expect His goodness. Not as a demand, but as a child expecting a Father’s care. May the Lord give you an understanding heart, filled with His wisdom, quiet from the fear of evil, and sustained by health to your bones. He is your shield and your exceedingly great reward.
