Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Healing comes at once from the touch of Christ, not in the slow convalescence of earthly medicine. When He acts, the fever departs and full strength returns immediately, the body needs no time to regain what the disease has stolen. Yet consider whether your request for overall wellness reaches only to the flesh, or whether it yearns for the health of the soul, which is the root of all true healing.
Many are dull of hearing, sluggish in zeal, and changeable as water, cold, unstable, pouring themselves into the fleeting currents of worldly care. But Christ still transforms wills, turning that watery weakness into the gladdening wine of a steadfast spirit. Do not assign forty days here or there to propitiate God and then return to the same habits that bred your sickness; for if you relapse after apparent recovery, you lose the labor and the health itself. The long illness of a soul requires perseverance, not sporadic remedies.
If you remain in this dullness, no physician of the body can give you what you seek. But even now, at what seems the threshold of despair, recovery is possible, strength renewed, eternal life grasped. Let the eager desire of your heart produce its fruit, not by fits and starts, but by a constant turning to the Lord, who changes even the most wavering resolve into something firm and full of health.
