Healing, stress, anxiety

Your honest prayer for healing, relief from stress and freedom from anxiety has been heard and I am joining you in prayer before the Lord.

Scripture shows us that God cares about the body as well as the soul. Matthew, writing under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, points to what happened when crowds came to Jesus in the evening at Peter's house and He healed many who were sick and oppressed. Matthew connects that to the prophecy in Isaiah chapter 53 verse 4, that He bore our infirmities and carried our sicknesses. That prophecy is not limited to forgiveness of sin alone. It also includes physical healing. When Jesus broke the bread and said this is my body broken for you, He was pointing to that same provision, that His suffering covers the whole person.

At the same time the Bible keeps us from presuming that God will grant immediate physical healing in every case in the way we expect. Paul prayed three times for his thorn in the flesh and the Lord chose not to remove it. There is much about healing we do not fully understand, why some are healed instantly and others are not. What we can hold firmly is that God is able to heal, healing is for today, and He is compassionate toward our physical needs. Jesus never used His miraculous power to meet His own needs, but He freely used it to meet the needs of others, which shows His heart toward you now.

Healing also comes in different ways. There is the one account where Jesus healed gradually, and there are many healings that come through the natural processes God has built into our bodies. Those processes are not less divine. He created nature and He works through it. And His healing touches not only the body but the mind and emotions as well. He can heal the wounds and scars inside that stress and anxiety have left.

There is a close connection between the health of the soul and the health of the body. John wrote his wish that a believer would prosper and be in good health even as his soul prospers. That was a personal wish, not a blanket promise that everyone will always be well, but it reveals a true principle. Proverbs says a joyful heart is good like medicine, and we now know scientifically how true that is. Ongoing stress and anxiety can harm the body, create harmful chemicals and wear us down. Caring for your soul is part of caring for your body.

That is why the question in the Psalms is so helpful for anxiety. The psalmist asked himself, why are you cast down, why are you disquieted within me, and then he answered himself, hope in God. Much of our anxiety grows when we feel trapped by pressure, whether relational, financial or spiritual, and when God seems left out of the picture the problem looks impossible. When we put God back into the equation and place our hope in Him, the situation is seen in a new light. He has shown His power and deliverance again and again for His people, and He can bring peace to your heart even while you wait for answers.

So I pray for you now in the name of Jesus, that the Lord would touch your body with His healing hand, whether in an instant or through a gradual process, and that He would bring relief from stress and deliverance from anxiety. I ask that He would heal you physically, emotionally and spiritually, calm your mind, quiet your heart, and help your soul to prosper as you rest in Him. May He remind you that His body was broken for you and that He bears your sicknesses and sorrows, and may He give you a joyful heart and a steady hope in Him day by day.

Keep feeding the inner person through prayer and the Word, remembering what Christ has done for you, and trusting that God sees you, loves you and is at work for your good.
