Consider the promise given, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You: because he trusts in You." This peace, this perfect peace, is not the shallow calm of a life without trouble, but a deep, profound stillness whispered to the heart by the blood of Jesus. It is a peace that can reign even when sorrows surge, a present possession for those thronged by duties and pressed by care. This is the peace you crave for your son, and it is found not in the removal of the trial, but in the nearness of the Healer. The very chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed. This is the one great cure-all for the sickness of the soul.
You cry out for strength to be renewed. It is good that you see this need, for human strength, in all its forms, is a fading thing. All strength apart from God is derived strength and is, consequently, measurable and must come to an end. But those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. When you feel that something is beyond your own power, that is the sacred moment to draw back, take a breath, and plead for strength from on high. He gives power to the faint, and to them that have no might, He increases strength. This renewal often comes not by a sudden infusion of might, but by a recovery, like a weakened limb slowly regaining its power. And sometimes, the most profound restoration of strength comes from a return to the quiet pool of pardoning mercy. Many a weary child of God has renewed his strength at the remembrance of sins forgiven.
Physically, mentally, spiritually, bring all this before the Great Physician. See, the tree of life bears not only fruit, but leaves, and the leaves are for the healing of the nations. From this I gather that the very least thing about Christ is full of healing virtue. A single touch of His garment, one drop of His blood brought home to the conscience by the Spirit, can effect a change that alters the life-blood of the spirit. Do not think that your son’s condition is beyond the reach of these healing leaves. It is a grand thing to believe with all your heart, soul, and strength, and to go from strength to strength into full assurance. But if his faith is weak, remind him, and yourself, that while we are yet without strength, Christ died for the ungodly. The dead cannot gather strength, and Christ comes to give life to those who have none.
In the restoration of a soul, the Lord often uses two outward means in a singular combination, a painful reminder of failure, and a look from the Lord. That look of Christ severs a man from the crowd and from his sin. O you who are now sick in body or soul, ask to be forgiven, and healing will come from the pardoning hand. This is the healing power conspicuously present where Christ is taught. One promise applied by His Spirit, and at once there is such a deep and profound peace that nothing can rival it. Bear this sorrow with Him, and then see what peace, what perfect peace, you will enjoy, even in the midst of it. Earth’s struggles soon shall cease, but until that day, the Lord Himself declares, "I will strengthen them in the Lord." It is a strength fitly infused and wisely balanced, not by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit.
