The memories that haunt you are real, and the cry for a cleared mind and a peaceful heart is one the Lord hears. There is a kind of healing the world rushes to offer, a shallow “peace, peace” declared when the war inside is still raging. But the peace you are asking for is not found in simply trying to forget. It is found in a transformed mind.
Your mind is the battlefield where the flesh and the Spirit contend for your attention. When the mind is occupied by the wounds of the past, replaying the trauma, it is fixed on the things of the flesh. That carnal mind, the Bible says, is death. It keeps you bound to the pain and the violation, churning in a realm of turmoil. But to be spiritually minded is life and peace. This peace is not merely the absence of distressing thoughts; it is the presence of a new mind, the mind of the Spirit.
Jesus emptied Himself. He stepped into a sin-cursed world and bore suffering so that your mind could be renewed. The healing He offers works by replacing what occupies your mind. What you sow into your mind, you will reap in your life. If you continually sow those memories, that is what will grow. But when you deliberately turn your mind to Him, filling it with His truth, with worship, with Scripture, something divine happens. Even in unoccupied moments, His words and His peace begin to flow through your thoughts, slowly crowding out the old pain.
God is not asking you to heal yourself through sheer willpower. He places His desires in your heart. He works in you to will and to do of His good pleasure. Bring your divided, hurting heart to Him, not out of a sense of duty to be “better,” but in a simple act of surrender. He sees your heart breaking, and it matters to Him. He is not distant from your pain. But remember, He always deals with you with eternity in mind. Your present comfort, even relief from these memories, is something He cares about, but His ultimate purpose is to conform you to the mind of Christ, a mind of life, joy, and deep, abiding peace.
Let me be plain: there is no lasting peace while your inner life is at war. The peace Christ gives is not a fragile truce. It is the end of hostilities. When you turn your life over to Him, you receive forgiveness and healing. The war against God, the enmity in your own soul, is over. You step into a peace that passes all understanding, a peace that garrisons your mind and heart. It is they who sow in peace that reap the fruit of righteousness.
So right now, take that honest look at your own heart. Do not seek the false peace of ignoring the pain. Bring the very memories that torment you into the light of His presence. Confess the fear, the anger, the defilement you feel. Lay it on the altar. As you do, He will begin to clear the mind of the flesh and cultivate in you the mind of the Spirit. That is where you will find the life, the joy, and the peace for which you are longing. Go in peace; your sins are forgiven, and His healing has begun.
