Healing from back injury

The pain that grips your son’s body and steals his sleep is not a thing to be despised, nor do I make light of a mother’s anxious heart. Yet I would have you consider what sort of injury this truly is. Is it an injury to feel the rod of correction in the flesh, when that very sensation may be the messenger of a far greater healing for the soul? When the body is brought low, the spirit, if sober, is often lifted up. For what we call injury and hardship, God frequently appoints as the sharp and bitter medicine that draws us from the sleep of worldly thoughts and drunkenness of careless ease. The harm is not in the suffering itself, but in suffering without purpose, without drawing near to the Physician.

You ask for healing, and rightly so, for nothing is impossible with God. But do not let your prayer be merely for the ceasing of the ache. Pray rather that your son, on this bed of pain, might meet the Lord who Himself endured the scourge and the nails for our sake. If the body is made delicate by constant softness, its healthfulness is injured; but a season of affliction, endured with thanksgiving, unnerves the power of sin and becomes a procurer of greater blessing. No one can truly injure us but ourselves, and no one can benefit us so greatly as those trials that drive us to clasp the feet of Christ. The sleepless night becomes a vigil if the heart watches for Him.

Let your alms and your prayers be joined for his sake, and let your son offer up his own pain as a sacrifice of praise. Entrust him to the faithful God who cannot deny Himself. Whether our bodies are whole or broken, He abides faithful, and His love is unwearied. Go now, and let this affliction be the occasion not for despair, but for a sober rousing of the soul.

I join you in asking the Lord to heal your son from this back injury and to relieve the pain that has stolen his sleep. It is hard to watch a child suffer, and our Father in heaven is not indifferent to that anguish. He is the God who sees our affliction, just as He looked upon Leah’s misery and heard her cry. His ear is not dull, and his arm is not shortened.

When Jesus walked among us, his miracles proclaimed who he is. He healed a man who had been lame for thirty-eight years, unable to move, with no hope of a cure. He opened the eyes of a man born blind simply by speaking the word. These works were not just acts of compassion; they testified that he is the Son of God, the promised Messiah who came to restore what sin has broken. And that same Son of God is now seated at the Father’s right hand, ever living to intercede for us.

So I pray that the healing power of Jesus would touch your son’s back right now. May the pain subside, may his muscles relax, and may sleep come upon him as a gift from the Lord who neither slumbers nor sleeps. I ask that the long nights of tossing and turning would be replaced by deep rest, and that his body would mend beyond what medicine alone can do.

At the same time, I pray that this trial would draw both of you closer to the heart of the Father. He gave his only begotten Son so that we might become adopted sons and daughters, crying, “Abba, Father.” If you are in Christ, you are not pleading from a distance; you are crying out from the family. The Father loves to hear his children ask. He did not spare his own Son but delivered him up for us all, how much more will he freely give us what we need?

Hold fast to the truth that God cannot lie. His word endures forever. He has promised to be your refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. When the pain persists, cling to the One who says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The Lord who saw the affliction of a barren wife and gave her a son, the Lord who raised Isaac from the altar in a foreshadowing of resurrection, is able to bring life and healing from this setback.

I stand with you in faith, thanking him already for hearing us. May your son soon sleep peacefully, wake refreshed, and give testimony to the goodness of God. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
