You plead for a wise heart and a good stewardship, and this is well. But consider that wisdom begins when the eyes of the soul are opened by God alone. The natural man, with all his sharpness, cannot see the well of living water though it lies at his feet. He that trusts his own understanding is like Hagar in the wilderness, perishing with the fountain near, until the Lord opens his eyes. To walk with the wise is to walk with Christ Himself, for He is made unto us wisdom. Let your eyes look right on, fixed upon Jesus, who is the author and finisher of our faith. No glance to the right hand or the left, no turning aside to the vain philosophies of this age, will bring you to the golden shore. The Word you desire to learn effectively will only unseal its treasures to a humble and contrite spirit, for unto this man will the Lord look. Pour out your soul before Him, yes, but understand that even the most halting prayer, the merest touch of the hem of His garment, is healing to the soul. The least fragment of this Sovereign remedy has omnipotence in it.
As for the many pains you carry in your body, the teeth, the eyes, the leg, the swellings, hear this truth and let it sink into your spirit. Healing and forgiveness are placed in happy conjunction by our Lord. When He spoke to the man sick of the palsy, He first declared his sins forgiven, and then bade him rise and walk. The root of all our woe is sin, and Christ is the great Physician who cuts at the core. I would not have you seek the leaves of healing while neglecting the fruit of pardon; Christ's first and chiefest work is to cleanse the guilty conscience before the throne of God. And yet, the very leaves of this tree are for the healing of the nations. The spit of His lips enlightened blind eyes; the look of His eyes softened hard hearts. Can He not, then, command restoration into your mortal frame? He who made the eye, shall He not see your need? He who formed the inward parts, shall He not repair them? Cast your whole burden upon Him. You say the ball is in the thigh and the abdomen, well, He knows every swelling, every secret malady. Nothing is hidden from His sight. The Lord's eyes never slumber; they run to and fro throughout the whole earth, and they see the faith that is trembling in your heart for complete healing.
Is your faith little? That is no barrier to Him if it is true faith. The most timid faith in Jesus Christ will save, and the same humble confidence will bring healing power into your frame. Do not look for some great sensation; do not wait for a full-grown Christian's strength. Be content to be a babe, a helpless paralytic laid at the Master's feet. There, lying before His eyes, is exactly where you must be, expecting His word. He sees the faith you scarcely recognise yourself. So lift up your eyes now, not to the temple, but to the bleeding Son of God. Look to the bronze serpent and healing is instantly given. Let us pray.
O Lord, open the eyes of this Your child, that there may be a clear sight of Jesus, a present Saviour. Speak the word, and let the wisdom tooth cease its aching, the vision be cleared, and every limb and organ feel the power of Your indwelling life. We ask not for a sign, but for Your touch, for the Sun of Righteousness to rise with healing in His wings. Let the Word of God be fulfilled, that walking with You, wisdom shall be found, and the whole man, spirit, soul, and body, preserved blameless. Make this frame a temple fit for Your indwelling, for Your glory alone. Amen.
