Oh, the cruel pangs of this frail body! Your dear mother bears a load of pain that wrings the heart. Yet even this sharp thorn may serve a blessed purpose if it drives her to the Great Physician. Our troubles, when they abound, are often the rough hand that pushes us nearer to God, and there, consolations abound even more. The tree of life, which is Christ, has leaves for the healing of the nations, and those leaves can reach her aching frame. But the deeper healing is for the soul.
Let her come to God just as she is, without any attempt to dress herself in false righteousness. The only safe course is to come as a sinner and cast herself upon free grace. Tell her not to be afraid of God, for God in Christ is gentle. Jesus, who is God and Man, knows our frame; He was made perfect through suffering. Let her look to Him on the cross, as Israel looked to the bronze serpent, and live.
Draw near to God in prayer, and He will draw near to her. She may feel weak, but the blood of Christ has brought us near, even to the mercy seat. Faith is the key: she must believe that God is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. I charge you, by that living hope, to bid her yield herself fully to Jesus. At the cross is the only safe meeting-place for a sinner and her God.
Pray for her healing, yes, cry out for it, but pray more that this pain becomes a tether to bind her heart to Christ, to preserve her in His presence, and to make her long for the day when sickness and sorrow flee away. God is with her even now; He is nearer than her own breath. Speak to Him for her, and urge her to speak to Him herself. The Lord bless her and keep her, and cause His face to shine upon her.
