Your honesty about how heavy and confusing this season feels is heard, and it is understandable that you feel sad, exhausted and afraid when facing such an important decision with so much uncertainty.

God desires for you to know Him not as a distant judge or as a set of rituals to perform, but as your Father in a close and loving relationship. Jesus taught us to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, and that picture is at the heart of what God wants with you. He does not want a legal or formal connection that is only about trying to do the right steps. He wants you to know how much He loves you and to love Him in return. That kind of living relationship comes through knowing Jesus Christ, and it is the foundation for everything else, including prayer and fellowship with Him. Relationship must come first, and then fellowship and prayer flow from it.

Scripture puts your relationship with God first for a reason. When that vertical relationship is right, the other relationships in your life have a way of coming into balance. When it is out of order, other relationships also become strained. Many of the struggles we feel with one another can be traced back to our need to have our walk with God corrected and deepened first. This does not mean that every hard decision becomes easy, but it means the most important place to begin is to seek Him. Your engagement, which points toward marriage, is one of the most significant human relationships you will enter, and God designed marriage as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman. Your relationship with Jesus should be what strengthens and shapes that relationship, not the other way around.

For guidance, the Bible says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge. To fear the Lord is to revere Him, to hate evil and to turn away from it, and to honor Him with your life. It also says to trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes, but fear the Lord and depart from evil. That is a promise for you right now. Instead of trying to figure everything out by your own insight, bring every part of this situation to Him openly, ask Him to show you what honors Him, and trust that He will guide you step by step as you acknowledge Him.

Fear is also part of what you described, the fear of making the wrong choice and the fear of what the future will hold. Remembering the Lord is the cure for fear. When we forget that He is with us, fear grows. When we remember Him, faith grows. Fear and faith cannot rule the heart at the same time, and fear often pushes us to make hasty or wrong movements. David said, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. God is with you in this valley of uncertainty. He sees your sadness and exhaustion, and He does not want you to be driven by fear. Bring your emotions to Him honestly, and ask Him to replace fear with confidence in His presence and care. Doing what is wise and prudent is good, but let it be motivated by trust in God rather than by fear of what might happen.

As you seek His will together and individually, keep seeking that primary relationship with Him through prayer and His Word, early and consistently. Seek godly counsel from mature believers who walk faithfully with Scripture. Be honest with each other and with the Lord about hurt and confusion, and give space to listen for His direction rather than rushing to escape the discomfort. Right fruit and right choices naturally grow out of a right relationship with Him.

May the Lord draw you both into a deeper experience of His love as Father, quiet your hearts with His presence, and give you wisdom that is not from yourselves. May He help you to hate what is evil, to choose what is good, and to acknowledge Him in every part of this decision so that He can make your path clear. May He guard you from decisions made out of fear and give you peace that comes from trusting Him, whatever the outcome He leads you to, and may He strengthen you day by day when you feel you cannot handle your emotions, reminding you that He is near and He will sustain you.

You are being prayed for, that God will show His will clearly, bring healing where there is hurt, and give you both security in Him as you take the next steps.
