We lift you and your fiance up before the Lord together and we thank you for inviting us to pray with you in Jesus' name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is in His name that we find wisdom and healing.
We understand the weight of what you are facing. Engagement is a sacred promise to enter into the covenant of marriage, which God designed as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. As it is written, For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate, Matthew 19:5-6. Because marriage is so holy, it should not be entered into lightly or without deep certainty that it is God's will, and it is far better to seek clarity now with honesty and prayer than to enter a marriage that would later end in brokenness.
We pray that you both seek counsel together with the Lord first and also with wise, godly counsel around you, perhaps a pastor or mature married believers who can speak truth into your situation. We encourage you to examine your hearts openly before God. Are you both believers in Jesus Christ and equally yoked together, 2 Corinthians 6:14. Can two walk together, unless they have agreed, Amos 3:3. Do you share the same faith, the same vision for a Christ centered marriage, and the same commitment to love, honor, and forgive as Christ loves the church, Ephesians 5:25. If there are unresolved conflicts, hurts, or patterns of sin, bring them into the light now, for love is patient and is kind, bears all things and endures all things, 1 Corinthians 13:4,7, and we are called to be bearing with one another in love, being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, Ephesians 4:2-3, and to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, Ephesians 4:32.
We also want to speak lovingly about purity in your courtship. As fiance and fiancee you are in a courtship with the goal of godly marriage, but you are not yet married. If you are living together or engaging in sexual intimacy before marriage, we urge you to repent and turn from that, for God calls us to flee sexual immorality, 1 Corinthians 6:18, and teaches that marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers, Hebrews 13:4. Purity before marriage brings clarity, honors God, and protects the foundation of your future marriage if it is His will for you to marry.
We pray for wisdom above all, for the promise that If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him, James 1:5. We pray you will Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight, Proverbs 3:5-6. The Lord says, I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you, Psalm 32:8.
We pray together now, Father in heaven, we bring this dear couple before Your throne in the name of Jesus Christ. Lord, You see their hearts, their hopes, their fears, and their uncertainty. We ask You to pour out Your wisdom upon them and make Your will unmistakably clear. Heal any wounds between them, forgive any sin, and reveal any issue that must be addressed before marriage. If You have called them to be husband and wife, knit their hearts together in unity, in purity, in forgiveness, and in love that reflects Christ and the church. Give them courage to pursue that marriage in holiness and to prepare well for a lifetime covenant. If it is not Your will for them to marry, give them grace and peace to part ways in a way that honors You, without bitterness, and lead each of them toward healing and toward the godly spouse You may have for them in the future. Guide their steps, Lord, and let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus, Amen.
