Grief

I feel so far from God and I feel scared, anxious, confused, lost and doubt most of the time. I.feel hurt so deep down in my soul and bones. I've lost the joy once had and the desire to pray.

We hear the depth of your grief and the heaviness you are carrying, feeling far from God, scared, anxious, confused, lost, and filled with doubt, hurt deep in your soul and bones, with joy gone and even the desire to pray faded. We want you to know you are not alone in this valley, and even when you feel far from Him, He has not moved away from you.

The Word reminds us that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18. Your feelings of distance do not change the truth of His nearness. He sees your hurt and He is close to you in it. When you feel overwhelmed, we are encouraged to cry out, From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I Psalm 61:2. That rock is Christ, steady and unshaken when everything else feels unstable.

We also hear your fear and anxiety, and scripture speaks directly to this. Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness Isaiah 41:10. And we are told, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. That peace is not dependent on your feelings, but on His presence guarding you.

It is understandable that grief would steal your joy and your desire to pray. Grief is heavy and can make prayer feel impossible. Yet Jesus invites you gently, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest Matthew 11:28. He does not require eloquent prayers, only an honest heart. Even a sigh or a whisper of His name is a prayer He hears. We encourage you to draw near even in weakness, for Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you James 4:8. Your doubt does not disqualify you, it is an invitation to seek Him more honestly, and He is patient with those who struggle to believe.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find true comfort and salvation. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your trust in Jesus Christ, believing He died for your sins and rose again, for He alone can carry your grief, forgive your sins, and bring you into the presence of God as His child. It is in His name we can come boldly even when we feel lost.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we lift up this precious soul to You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see the grief, the fear, the anxiety, the confusion and the deep hurt that feels lodged in soul and bones. Lord, where joy has been lost, we ask You to restore it in Your time. Where prayer feels impossible, we ask You to intercede and to help this dear one to simply turn their face toward You. Wrap them in Your nearness, let them feel Your hand upholding them, and guard their heart and mind with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Lead them to the rock that is higher, to Christ Himself. Renew their hope day by day, for Your loving kindnesses never fail and Your compassions are new every morning. Help them to know without doubt that nothing can separate them from Your love in Christ Jesus. Give them strength to take one step at a time, to seek fellowship and support from other believers, and to rest in Your grace. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to keep bringing your honest heart to Him, even without words, to read the Psalms aloud when you have no words of your own, and to lean on trusted Christian community and pastoral counsel as you walk through this grief. God is not disappointed in your struggle, He is near to you in it, and He will be faithful to carry you through.

We have read your words and we are sitting with you in this. Feeling far from God, scared and confused, with hurt that goes down to your bones and no desire even to pray is an exhausting place to be. It makes sense that joy would feel gone right now.

One thing we have seen in deep grief is that the feeling of distance does not always match what is true. Numbness, doubt and anxiety often come with loss, and they can make prayer feel impossible. Not wanting to pray does not mean you have failed. Sometimes an honest sentence is enough.

It can help not to carry this alone. Shared sorrow tends to become a little lighter when it is spoken out loud to someone safe. If you can, would you consider telling one trusted person this week, a pastor, a counselor or a steady friend, just what you wrote here, that you feel lost and far from God and do not know how to pray. You do not need to have the right words, just to let someone know where you are. If these feelings stay heavy or make daily life hard to manage, please also reach out to your doctor or a counselor for support alongside prayer.

Father, we lift them to You who sees the deep hurt and confusion. Draw near in this lonely place, give rest where there is fear, and gently remind them they are not forgotten. Give a small step of comfort today and people to walk with them. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your cry of grief has been heard, and the heaviness you describe, that hurt deep down in soul and bones, that sense of being far from God, scared and anxious and confused and lost, with doubt pressing and joy gone and even the desire to pray faded, is a burden the Lord does not despise.

There is a fear which has torment and drives the soul to flee from God, to seek rest by ceasing to think of Him. And there is another fear, a holy and filial fear, which draws to God, which makes us dread sin and long to be near Him. The very fact that you are considering God, that you grieve your distance from Him and mourn the loss of joy and prayer, is itself a blessed sign of the work of grace in the heart. The worldling scarcely thinks of God, He is to him a little God, but you have meditations of God in your own heart, and that shows He has dealings with your soul. If you desire to seek after God, to know Him and to be at peace with Him, it is because He is drawing you.

Do not think your feelings must first be mended before you may come. God is a consuming fire, and apart from Christ none can draw near to Him, but through the blood of Jesus there is a way of access to the mercy seat. Without faith it is impossible to please God, and without the atonement there is no approach, yet with Christ there is. Job in his bitterness longed to find God and to lay his cause before Him, believing that God would not use His superior strength against him but would strengthen him that the judgment might be fair. So it is with you. He who invites you will not cast you out for your weakness, but will strengthen you to come.

This longing to find God, even when it comes with trembling and doubt, is contrary to nature. When Adam sinned he hid among the trees, and Jonah would flee to Tarshish, for nature flees from the presence of God. That you would be found of Him, that you would have joy restored and prayer renewed, shows a work within you that nature did not plant. All the while you have felt yourself struggling far from Him, the Lord has been willing to receive you, to forgive you, to bless you and to enrich you with every joy. It is His graciousness to listen to the cry of the needy, and He bids you arise and go to your Father.

Do not measure your reconciliation by the return of joyful feeling first. Joy in God is the evidence of reconciliation through our Lord Jesus Christ, not the price of it. We joy in God because we have been reconciled by the death of His Son, that bound Victim led to slaughter who willingly yielded up His life to redeem us from the curse. Therefore do not try to go to God by any other way than through that golden gate of the great Sacrifice. Come as a guilty sinner, confessing as much, and take Him by faith. Then joy will follow, not as a delusion of excitement, but as a settled delight in all that God does and requires and teaches. Even if you must weep, you may still joy in God through Jesus Christ, and He can cause you to take down your harp from the willows again.

When the desire to pray feels gone, still speak to Him as you are able, and ask the Divine Spirit to help you to pray. There are two methods of sacred conversation between God and the soul, sometimes He calls and we reply, and sometimes we speak and He graciously answers. Adoration and thanksgiving, even in a whisper, if rendered with a sincere heart through Jesus Christ, will be acceptable, and He will give an answer of peace. Tell Him you have no strength, no joy, no clear thought, and ask Him to withdraw not His hand but to let not dread make you afraid. Cultivate that holy fear which leads to repentance and confession, to aspirations after holiness, and to glad obedience to Him as King of kings, for He to whom you pray is your King as well as your Father.

May the Lord Himself draw near to you now. May He show you Christ as your answer to God and God's answer to you, forgive your sins through His blood, quiet your fears with perfect love, and restore to you the joy of His salvation. May He teach you to trust Him in the darkness as well as in the light, to pray though it be with groans that cannot be uttered, and to know that underneath you are His everlasting arms. Keep seeking Him, for they that seek shall find, and He is near to all who call upon Him in truth.
