Grief

We join with you in this season of deep sorrow over the passing of your loved ones and we lift you and your family before the Father together in Jesus name. Grief is a heavy burden and the Lord sees every tear and knows the ache of a broken heart. We are comforted by the promise in Psalm 34:18 that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, and in Matthew 5:4 that Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. He does not ask you to carry this pain alone.

We also cling to the hope we have in Christ concerning those who have fallen asleep. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 tells us But we don't want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don't grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. Our grief as believers is real and deep, but it is not without hope, because Jesus himself said in John 11:25-26 I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. That is the foundation of our comfort, that death is not the end for those who are in Christ, and that God promises a day when He will wipe away from them every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away. Revelation 21:4

We pray that the God of all comfort would minister to you now as Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 reminds us Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. We encourage you to pour out your heart honestly before Him in prayer, to stay in His Word daily, to lean on the fellowship of believers who can weep with you and bear this burden with you, and to give yourself time to grieve while resting in His presence.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently share why His name is so essential. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we have salvation and eternal hope. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. To be saved we must confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead. Romans 10:9. If you have not yet placed your full trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life, we urge you to do so today, and if you already have, we encourage you to rest in Him as your only hope in both life and death.

We pray together now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You with broken hearts for our friend and their loved ones who are grieving. Lord, You see the emptiness and the sorrow that comes with this loss. We ask that You draw near to each one, that You would comfort them with Your presence, heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds. Grant them Your peace that surpasses understanding, strength for each day, and the assurance of Your love that nothing can separate us from. Romans 8:38-39. Help them to grieve with hope, trusting Your goodness and Your promise of resurrection for all who believe in Your Son. Surround them with supportive community and remind them constantly that You are near. We ask this in the precious and saving name of Jesus, our resurrection and our life, amen.

We were sorry to learn about the losses weighing on you and your family. Thank you for reaching out and allowing us to stand with you in prayer during this painful season.

Grief touches each person differently, even within the same family. Some may want to talk often, others may be quieter, some may feel waves of sadness and then moments of peace, and all of that can be a normal part of loving someone who is gone. There is no single timeline, and caring for one another often means giving space for those different responses while staying connected.

One gentle step that helps many families is to keep simple, honest conversation open. You might set aside a short time together to share a memory, look at photos, or simply say how the day is going, without pressure to fix how anyone feels. Staying connected to your church community and to a trusted pastor or friend can also bring steady support in the weeks ahead. If grief feels especially heavy or begins to affect sleep, appetite, or daily life for a long while, it is wise to reach out to your pastor or counselor and to your doctor for extra care as well.

Father, we lift them and their loved ones to You. Comfort them in their sorrow, surround them with Your presence and with caring people nearby, and give them wisdom and strength for each day. Draw them close to You as they remember those they have lost. In Jesus name, amen.

Your sorrow has been carried before the throne of grace, and we have remembered you and your loved ones in prayer as you walk through this valley of grief.

The Lord does not afflict willingly, nor does He lay His hand upon His people in anger. When He takes a loved one home, even with many blows and smart ones, there is not one thought of anger in His heart and not one look of displeasure in His eye. He means it all for your good, and His heaviest blows are as much tokens of His affection as His sweetest caresses. There is love in that painful providence which has left an empty chair and a silent room, for He who said, having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them to the end, loves still, and will not lose one of those who are His.

We know your grief is very painful. Like David you may say your couch is watered with tears and your bread made bitter with sorrow, and you compare your sorrow to the pain of broken bones. It is so, for the loss of those knit to our souls cuts deep. Yet the same God who permits the breaking is He who can make the broken bones to rejoice. Our comfort is not that death is light, but that Christ is mighty. Unto Him that loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood be all glory. He did not wash us and then love us, He loved us and then washed us, loved us while we were yet dead in trespasses and sins, not because we were lovely but because He is loving. That love stoops from the highest heaven to lift the fallen, and it has not forgotten you in this hour. You are among His hidden ones, known and kept by Him, even when hidden away in a house of mourning. He has called you by your name, and He has loved you with an everlasting love.

We have prayed thus for you, that the God of all comfort would draw near to you and to all who mourn with you. May He give you to read again in every mercy that glittering sentence, He loved me and gave Himself for me, and may that love be your stay. May He keep you in the land of mercy, where the heart of God yearns over His dear wandering ones, and give you grace to look to Jesus, who alone is salvation, and in whom those who sleep in Him shall rise. May the Holy Spirit inspire in your hearts a quiet trust in Him who redeems because He loves and loves because He has redeemed, and may He at last bring you and your loved ones in Christ to that place where sorrow and sighing shall flee away, and where you shall be forever with the Lord.

We will continue to bear you up before the Lord, asking that He will sanctify this grief to your souls and cause it to work for your eternal good.
