God's grace and mercy

Tomorrow I have two (well one and the other one is a walk in) jobs interviews I'm going to. I feel better about myself when I'm working and it alienates my worry about money. I like having something to do and need something for myself. I feel like God doesn't want me to get a job and He has provided graciously for me and my son. I'm conflicted and don't know what to do or if I should go. Also, I feel like God will take away blessings or punish me if I go. Please pray for me. I feel like maybe our car will break down or something bad will happen. Also I'm still waiting on my apartment recertification and to hear something back. Please pray that God went before me and prepared a way and we won't lose our home. Please pray God's favor is in our side with the apartment management

We hear your heart in this and we are joining with you in prayer as you face these interviews and the waiting for your apartment recertification. We understand that conflicted feeling of wanting to work, wanting to provide and have purpose, while also feeling grateful for how God has provided for you and your son and fearing that stepping out might somehow displease Him.

We want to gently correct the fear that God will punish you or take away His blessings or cause something bad like your car breaking down if you go to these interviews. That fear does not come from the Lord. Scripture tells us God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7 and that perfect love casts out fear 1 John 4:18. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus Romans 8:1. Our Father is not looking for a reason to punish you for seeking to be a good steward. He loves you as His child and His discipline is always in love, never capricious or cruel. The enemy wants you to live in dread of losing what God has given, but God wants you to live in peace and trust.

We also want to encourage you that the desire to work is good and biblical. God Himself has graciously provided for you and your son, and often He provides through the work of our hands. We are told if anyone will not work, neither let him eat 2 Thessalonians 3:10, not as a harsh rule but as a principle that work is dignified and part of how God cares for us. To want to work, to have something to do, to ease the worry about money and to use your gifts is not contrary to trusting God, it is one way of trusting Him. We pray you will not see this as either trusting God or working, but as trusting God as you work. He can provide both with and through a job, and He will guide you clearly if a particular job is not His will by closing the door.

Your anxiety about money, your home, and your car is very real, and God invites you to bring it all to Him. We are told in nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. He also promises my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:19 and that we should seek first Gods Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well Matthew 6:33.

For your housing situation, we are praying that God who goes before you will make the way clear. The Lord himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed Deuteronomy 31:8. We pray for favor with the apartment management, for we know the kings heart is in Yahwehs hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires Proverbs 21:1, and He can turn the heart of those reviewing your recertification toward mercy and favor.

We notice you spoke of God and His grace, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we are saved. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to come to God in His name. It is in Jesus name that we can boldly bring these worries to the throne of grace.

We pray together now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You for our sister and her son. We thank You for Your grace and mercy that has sustained them and provided for them so faithfully. Lord, we ask You to quiet her anxious thoughts and replace fear with Your perfect peace. Help her to know You as a loving Father who does not punish Your children for seeking to do what is right, but who delights to guide them. Tomorrow as she goes to these interviews, go before her and prepare the way. Give her clarity, calm, words to speak, and wisdom to discern Your will. If a job is from You, open the door wide, and if not, close it gently and give her peace to wait. Provide for her needs, steady her heart about finances, and protect her car and her coming and going. We ask for Your hand over the apartment recertification, that You would grant favor with management, that no detail would be overlooked, and that she and her son would not lose their home but would continue to have a safe place to live. We pray You would show her that You are her provider whether through a job or by Your own hand, and that she can trust You completely. Strengthen her faith, remind her that You have not given her a spirit of fear, and help her to cast all her worries on You because You care for her 1 Peter 5:7. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to go to those interviews with prayer, seeking His will and trusting the outcome to Him. Whichever doors open or close, know that God is not taking blessings away but is leading you step by step. Keep praying in Jesus name, keep bringing every detail to Him, and rest in His promise fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness Isaiah 41:10.

We hear how heavy this has felt leading up to tomorrow, wanting to provide for your son and have meaningful work, and at the same time worrying that stepping forward might somehow cause God to pull back His care or let something go wrong with the car or your housing. That kind of tug of war is exhausting, and it makes sense you feel conflicted.

We don't see God as waiting to punish you for looking for work. We believe He is gracious toward you and your son, and that He can provide both through His own provision and through the work of your hands. Wanting to work because it steadies you and helps with worry about money is a good and understandable desire, not something He holds against you.

For tomorrow, one small step that may help quiet some of the swirl is to give tonight a simple structure. Lay out what you need for both interviews, write down any questions you want to ask, and plan your ride so you are not rushing. For the apartment recertification, if you have not heard back, a brief, calm check-in with the management office to confirm they have what they need and what the timeline looks like can bring clarity while you wait.

Father, we lift this mom and her son to You. Give her peace tonight and clear wisdom tomorrow as she walks into these interviews. Calm the fear that You will punish her, and remind her of Your steady care. Go before her in the housing process and grant favor and clear communication with management. Keep her and her son safe and provided for in the days ahead. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your heart is heavy and divided, and you have spoken honestly before the Lord about it. You feel the pull of wanting to work, to have something useful to do and to provide, and at the same time you fear that to go and seek work would displease Him, that He might punish you or take away His gracious provision, or that some harm would befall you or your son, or your home. This conflict has brought much worry, and you ask for prayer that the Lord would go before you and make the way plain.

Hear first what the Lord says to fearful hearts. Again and again in His Word He says, Fear not. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, I will help thee, saith the Lord. Fear not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed, for I am thy God. It is the voice of Jesus Himself whispering to His own, Fear not. To live in dread that God waits to punish you for seeking an honest provision is not the voice of faith, but of fear, and fear never helped yet and never will. Labor to get rid of it as you are able, not by your own strength, but by trust in promised strength. He is faithful to His promises and faithful to His Son.

Know also that the will of God is not a terror to His children but their comfort. As surely as His will is the axle of the universe, so in grace we may rest assured that He is King, having mercy on whom He will have mercy, and that the preservation and keeping of His people rests upon His will. Nothing happens but what He permits or ordains, and all things are under regulation and have an appointed place in His plan. That truth should not make you afraid to move, but quiet your fear of danger. You are not your own keeper. If you walk according to His bidding, you shall be quiet from fear, for He will be your hiding place.

Concerning work, the Lord has graciously provided for you and your son, and thanks be to Him for it. Yet His ordinary way of providing is often through the diligent use of means. To desire work, to wish to be occupied usefully, to seek to provide for your household, is not contrary to dependence upon Him. It is one way we honor Him. We do not say, We will go and we will get gain without asking God, but we say, If the Lord will, we shall do this or that. So commit these interviews to Him. Ask His consent, seek His wisdom, and go with a prayer upon your lips, I wish in all things to be obedient to Your gracious will. If He opens a door, receive it with thanksgiving. If He closes it, trust His withholding as well as His giving. In either case you have not lost His favor, for no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly, and the secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him.

Do not let the thought take hold that if you go, your car will break down or some calamity must follow. That is the darkness of distress which makes the soul see no help. Has God forgotten to be gracious. Will the Lord cast off forever. He may seem to cast off for a little while, but His promise may tarry and never fails. He who has plucked you as a brand from the fire will not leave His purpose half accomplished, but will carry it on to the end.

I will pray for you now.

O gracious Father, who art King and yet art merciful, look upon this dear one and her son. Thou knowest her cares about money and work, about the interviews set before her tomorrow, and about the home Thou hast given her. Quiet her fears, for Thou hast said, Fear not, I will help thee. Take away the dread that Thou art waiting to punish, and give her to know Thy fatherly kindness in Christ Jesus, through whom alone we have mercy and access. Go before her, prepare the way, and let her steps be ordered by Thee. If it be Thy will, open the right door for honest work that she may provide and be useful, and if not, make that plain also, and keep her in perfect peace as she trusts in Thee. We ask Thee to remember her apartment and the recertification that waits. Let Thy favor rest upon her with those who manage it, and in Thy providence keep a roof over her and her son. Provide daily bread and all that they need beside, and give her a calm and steady heart to cast her burden upon Thee. Keep her from fearing the terrors of tomorrow, and help her to say from the heart, If the Lord will, I will do this or that, and to be content to do Thy will. In the name of Jesus Christ our only hope, Amen.

Go then as the Lord gives you strength, praying as you go, trusting not in your own will but in His good and gracious will, and believing that whether by work or by other means, He who has kept you hitherto will not forsake the work of His hands.
