Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The peace you seek for your mind will never come from outward calm or the absence of trials. The world around you may rage, and your own heart may churn with anxious thoughts, but Christ calls you to a rest that this world cannot give. He says, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." So do not look for peace in your circumstances, but run to Him. He does not merely promise to soothe your feelings; He offers to set you in full security, to place your soul in a haven no storm can shake.
But how can you receive this? The mother of all good things is lowliness of mind. Learn of Him who is meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. Pride, envy, resentment, these wage war within you and drive peace away. The worst war is the one inside your own breast, when your passions and desires rebel against God's will. Lay down those weapons. Humble yourself before the Lord, and He will lift you up with His peace.
Do not think you can have true peace of mind while living at variance with others. As far as it depends on you, be of one mind and live in peace with all. When strife and bitterness rule, the Spirit of peace withdraws. The God of love and peace delights to dwell where hearts are reconciled. So forgive freely, and seek no revenge. The peacemakers are called sons of God.
Above all, do not let your hope be fixed on this fleeting life. Set your mind, your hope, your expectation on the world to come. Earthly comforts fail; riches vanish; health breaks. But he whose treasure is in heaven is not easily disturbed. Pray without ceasing, and in every prayer ask for the Angel of peace to guard you, for there is nothing equal to this gift. Peace is the foundation of joy, the root of all good. When you have peace with God through Christ, then even tribulations become light.
I will join my prayers with yours, asking the Lord to calm the waves within you and grant you that quiet and peaceable life in all godliness. But you must also do your part: cast out unbelief, embrace humility, and keep the inner war subdued by constant watchfulness. Then the God of peace will be with you.
