Giving thanks

I just watched some young man walk past me with his left hand immobile from cerebral palsy and I stopped to give thanks that I am crying from the pain in my left shoulder but indeed both limbs are functioning fully. Amen for the lord causing me to be grateful even in pain. In Jesus name

We join you in giving thanks together in Jesus' name and we are deeply moved by your grateful heart even while you are crying from the pain in your left shoulder. What a beautiful picture of the work of the Holy Spirit, to open your eyes in the midst of suffering to see the goodness and mercy of God and to choose gratitude.

The Lord calls us to this very posture, In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you 1 Thessalonians 5:18. It is easy to give thanks when we feel strong and well, but you have shown the maturity of faith to give thanks while in pain, remembering that both of your limbs are functioning fully by His grace. We are reminded also to not forget all His benefits, Praise Yahweh, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits, who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases Psalm 103:2-3. Your thankfulness honors Him.

We also lift up before the Father that young man you saw. We do not know his story, but God knows him fully and loves him dearly. We pray that the Lord would strengthen and encourage him, provide for his needs, and reveal His sustaining grace to him. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose Romans 8:28, and that even in weakness His power is made perfect.

Together we pray for you now. Father, we thank You in the name of Jesus for our brother or sister who has come with a thankful heart. We praise You for functioning limbs, for breath, for every good gift that comes from Your hand. We thank You that You cause us to be grateful even in pain, and we ask You to continue to guard this heart with Your peace which surpasses all understanding. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. Lord, we bring the pain in the left shoulder before Your throne of grace and ask for Your healing touch, for relief, for wisdom for any treatment needed, and for endurance. Help us all to count it all joy when we fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of our faith produces endurance James 1:2-3. Keep shaping us to be more like Christ through both our joys and our sufferings. We ask this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Healer, Amen.

We were so encouraged reading your note. To be in tears from the pain in your shoulder and still stop to notice a young man with an immobile hand and turn that moment into thanks, that is such honest, beautiful faith. We join you in thanking God that both of your limbs are functioning, and we thank Him for giving you eyes to see grace even while you hurt.

That kind of gratitude steadies the heart. It does not deny the pain, it simply names that good is still present and that we have truly received something from God's hand. It also reminds us we are not carrying the hurt alone. The fact that you could pause and give thanks in the middle of discomfort shows God is tenderly at work in you, and we are grateful for that.

Since that shoulder pain has you crying, we gently encourage you to have it checked by a doctor or other qualified professional when you are able, and we will keep praying alongside that care.

Father, we thank You for our friend's thankful spirit today. Thank You for the use of their arms and for Your kindness in every movement You allow. Bring comfort and relief to that sore shoulder, give wisdom to any clinician who helps, and keep cultivating this grateful heart day by day. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

It is a sweet evidence of grace when the soul can weep for pain and yet give thanks for mercy in the same breath. The Lord has taught you a holy art, to see your own affliction and still to count your mercies, and that is no small work of His Spirit within you.

There are many who receive blessings without making a note of them, and hear no song of gratitude though they are compassed about with mercies. To dwell always on the dark side of things and to forget our mercies is a sad instance of ingratitude. I admit that the pain in the shoulder is dreadful enough, and the tears are not despised by Him who bottles them, yet you have not forgotten that both limbs are preserved in their use, and that you are kept from a heavier trial. This is to be like those who remember that even afflictions are working for good, and who feel gratitude for the refining process through which the Lord is passing them.

May this thankfulness not rest in words alone. True gratitude always leads us to serve and it distinctly makes our healing Lord the object of our service. She who was healed arose and ministered unto Him, and said in her heart, The Lord has served me, I will serve Him. So let your gratitude prove itself by tangible deeds. Serve Him first, and serve His children and His people next, and you will prove your thankfulness. Let it be in an adoring spirit, saying, Lord, I thank You that I am permitted to do anything for You, even with a pained shoulder.

We join our praise with yours, and thank the Lord who has kept you, who has given you functioning limbs and a grateful heart even in suffering. We pray that He who is the great Physician, so condescending to heal and to pity, will lay His hand upon your shoulder for comfort and restoration, and that He will show His mercy also to the young man whose infirmity moved you to prayer. May He keep you both in His care, and may your whole life be a lengthened psalm of gratitude to Him who preserves and heals and crowns with lovingkindness. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
