Giving for Life Eternal 2 Jul 2026 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. - Mathew 6:19-21 Devotional: During ###'s life (1703 – 91), Britain experienced rapid urbanization and the beginnings of industrialization. This caused the collapse of rural economies and problems in city centers, such as overcrowding, disease, crime, unemployment, debt, substance abuse, and even insanity (London established its first asylum in 1781). Meanwhile a small upper class spent large sums to distance itself, literally and figuratively, from the growing problems. This top 5 percent of the population controlled nearly one-third of the national income. ###, part of the lower-middle class, interacted mostly with people who worked hard, owned little, and could never be certain of their financial future. But he eventually became so well known as a preacher that he earned 1,400 pounds per year - equivalent to more than $160,000 today. Still, he chose to live simply but comfortably on just 30 pounds while giving the rest away. He donated nearly all of the 30,000 pounds he earned in his lifetime. "If I leave behind me 10 pounds..., you and all mankind can bear witness against me that I have lived and died a thief and a robber," he said. This is not to say that you give everything away without caring for your family, God wants us to take care of our homes first, but are you forsaking those in need with what you have left over Prayer: Loving God of all creation, give me wisdom to use the treasures of this world in a way that grows your kingdom. Help me to manage my finances and talents between family and those you send to me in need. In Jesus' name, Amen.

We hear your heartfelt reflection on the call to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth, and we join you in seeking God’s wisdom in how we steward the resources He has entrusted to us. The example of is indeed inspiring, his life demonstrates that true wealth is not measured by what we accumulate, but by what we give away for the sake of the Gospel and the well-being of others.

The Scripture you shared from Matthew 6:19-21 reminds us that our hearts follow our treasure. If we invest in earthly possessions, our affections will be bound to them, but if we invest in eternal things, faith, love, generosity, and the spread of the Gospel, our hearts will be anchored in God’s kingdom. This is not a call to reckless abandon of responsibility, but to a radical trust in God’s provision while prioritizing His purposes. As 1 Timothy 5:8 warns, "But if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever." Yet, we must also heed the warning in Luke 12:15, where Jesus says, "Beware! Guard yourselves against every kind of greed, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things he possesses."

We must ask ourselves: Are we holding loosely to the things of this world, or have we allowed material possessions to take the place of God in our lives? Are we using our resources to bless others, or are we hoarding them out of fear or selfishness? The early church in Acts 2:44-45 set a powerful example: "All who believed were together and had all things in common. They sold their possessions and goods, and distributed them to all, according as anyone had need." This was not communism, but a voluntary, joyful generosity born out of love for God and one another.

Let us also remember that our giving is not just about money. We are called to give our time, our talents, our compassion, and our prayers. James 2:15-16 challenges us: "If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and in lack of daily food, and one of you tells them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and filled;' and yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?" True faith is active, not passive.

We rebuke the spirit of greed and selfishness that so easily entangles us in this world. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10), and it can blind us to the needs of others and the call of God. We must resist the temptation to measure our worth by our bank accounts or our possessions, for our true value is found in Christ alone.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, recognizing that everything we have belongs to You. Forgive us for the times we have clung to earthly treasures, forgetting that they are temporary and fleeting. Teach us to hold loosely to the things of this world and to invest in Your kingdom with joy and generosity. Give us wisdom to manage our finances, our time, and our talents in a way that honors You and blesses others. Help us to see the needs around us and to respond with compassion, not indifference. May our lives reflect the selfless love of Christ, who gave everything for us. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus, our Savior and Lord, Amen.

We encourage you to seek God’s guidance daily in how you steward your resources. Start by examining your heart, are there areas where you have allowed materialism to take root? Then, look for opportunities to give, whether through your local church, ministries that serve the poor, or simply by being a blessing to someone in need. Remember, it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Let your life be a testament to the truth that our greatest treasure is found in Christ, and that true joy comes from living for Him.

We hear the genuine longing in your prayer: a heart that wants to hold treasure loosely and use it well for the kingdom while still caring faithfully for your family. That tension can feel heavy at times, wondering if we’re getting the balance right. So we’re grateful you shared this.

What helps us most in seasons like this is remembering that the goal isn’t a perfect formula but a gradually shifting center of gravity. Our security starts to move from the accounts we can see to the care we can’t always trace. That shift rarely happens all at once; it grows as we make small, concrete choices and then watch how God meets us in them.

One simple way forward might be to take a week and, without changing anything yet, just notice where your money goes and ask the Lord to highlight one area, maybe a regular expense, a category of spending, or an urge to hold back, that seems especially tied to your sense of safety or identity. Then offer that one area back to him in prayer, asking what he’d have you do with it for a season. Sometimes a small experiment in letting go opens our eyes more than a big resolution.

We also love the part of your prayer that asks for wisdom to manage talents as well as finances. Time, skill, attention, these are treasures, too. A person who’s taking elderly parents to appointments or mentoring a struggling student is already storing up what lasts. So don’t overlook the non-financial ways you are already giving.

We pray with you now:

Father, thank you for the honest desire to invest our lives in what endures. Free us from the quiet fear that there won’t be enough, and teach us to hold what we have with open hands. Give our friend clarity about next steps, and let their giving, whether money, time, or presence, flow from trust in you rather than guilt or pressure. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The example you have set before us of that preacher who lived on thirty pounds and gave the rest away is a bright testimony to our Lord’s command: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt.” The true steward remembers that nothing is his own, it is all his Master’s. This is the main point of his stewardship. He is charged, too, with the general care of the family; he has not merely to look after the stores, but to take care of all the family. Yet the family for which we care is not bounded by our earthly household; there is a whole family in heaven and earth, one undivided household, and when you give to the least of Christ’s brethren you minister to that family and reveal the manifold wisdom of God to principalities and powers.

I hear your prayer for wisdom to manage your finances and talents between family and those in need. Many a runner in the heavenly race cannot win because they carry too much weight. How hardly shall a rich man enter into the kingdom of heaven! Yet it is not that you neglect your own, but that you seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Are you willing to bear the reproach of Christ because you count it greater treasure than all the riches of Egypt? Are you willing now to take up Christ’s Cross because you believe in Christ’s crown? That is the heart which truly lays up treasure in heaven.

Press onward and upward in heavenly attainments. The Holy Spirit works in you to this very end, that you be no more a mere child, but a well-taught man of God. Through desire, a man having separated himself, seeks and intermeddles with all wisdom. Separate yourself from the world’s clutching spirit, and the heavenly wind shall fill your sails. Let the Lamb who sits upon the throne be your chief treasure. Himself, Himself, my soul pines for Him! What bliss to gaze upon the Man, the God, crucified for me! When He is your treasure, your heart will follow, and you will run with patience the race set before you, counting all but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus your Lord.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You speak of laying up treasure in heaven, and you recall the example of that man who gave away nearly all his income, yet I must ask you: what defiles the man, and what truly purifies the gift? You wash your hands and wear clean garments, but do you come before God with a clean soul? For it is not the money that purchases the Kingdom, but the purpose of the heart. The widow with her two mites gained everything, not because she gave much, but because she offered all with a ready will, holding nothing back for herself. If you have this disposition, even a cup of cold water can secure heaven; without it, ten thousand talents of gold are but dust.

Be on guard then, lest your giving become a cause of pride. For God has dealt to each the measure of faith, and it is no achievement of your own. Why think highly of yourself? The wisdom of this world, which trusts in abundance of possessions, is foolishness before God. Can a sick body be healed by a king’s ransom? No more can the soul be cured by earthly treasure. That man you admire counted himself unworthy, and because he humbled himself, Christ gave him more than he asked. Do likewise: seek first the kingdom, and all else shall be added.

Do not suppose that your family’s need excuses you from mercy, for he who provides for his own and shuts his heart to the destitute has misunderstood the command. The true wisdom speaks among the perfect: it is not of this world, nor of the rulers who are passing away. Your treasure is where your heart is, if your heart clings to what moth and rust destroy, you are still among those without, outside the paternal mansion. But if you distribute with love toward man and a superiority to earthly things, you store up what no thief can steal.

Let your prayer be not merely for wisdom to manage finances, but for a purpose of mind that gives gladly, knowing that the Kingdom is not bought with money but with a humble, merciful soul. Cleanse the inward man, and your alms will rise as a sweet savor. Do not despond; heavenly things are yours if you offer yourself entirely to God.
