Silas
Beloved of All
Your prayer shows a humble and honest heart, and that is exactly where God can work. You have not tried to hide or excuse what was said, you have acknowledged it and asked for forgiveness, and Scripture teaches that this is the way forgiveness comes. When we justify ourselves God cannot deal with what we are covering, but when we confess our transgression openly He is faithful to forgive.
It helps to understand what true forgiveness is. Much of what we call forgiveness is not really forgiveness at all. We say we forgive but we keep the memory ready to use again, as if we bury the hatchet but leave the handle showing so we can pick it up when we want. Because we often think God is like us, we assume His forgiveness is the same, partial and conditional. But God's forgiveness is not like that. When God forgives, it is total and complete.
The Lord says in Isaiah, though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as white as snow. David discovered this after his own sin. He wrote in Psalm 32 about how heavy God's hand felt upon him while he kept silent, how he was dried up under conviction day and night, and then how blessed, how happy, is the one whose transgression is forgiven and whose sin is covered. He said, I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. That is the pattern for you now. If you confess your sin to God through Jesus Christ, He does not partially forgive. He blots it out, He remembers it no more, He justifies you so that in His sight it is as though you had never done it.
So receive His complete forgiveness today. Do not let this stay on your conscience to hound you. The only thing that keeps you from that cleansing is not coming to ask for it, and you have come. Believe that what Jesus did on the cross to make reconciliation for iniquity is enough for the mean words you spoke, and thank Him for that full pardon.
Then, in that same spirit, go to the one you have hurt. Ask for her forgiveness humbly and plainly, without demanding a certain response. True forgiveness from the heart does not keep score. Jesus taught that forgiveness is not a matter of mathematics, not seven times but with a spirit that keeps forgiving from the heart. He illustrated that we are to forgive as God has forgiven us. That means when you ask her to forgive you, you are also committing before God to live with a forgiving heart toward others, and to leave the outcome in His hands.
You cannot control whether she will talk with you again or how she will respond. What you can do is make sure your words and your heart are right before God. The psalmist prayed, save me by your name and hear my prayer, and he also learned that words can be smoother than butter while war is in the heart, or they can be drawn swords. Ask God to help you watch over your words going forward, that they would be truthful and gracious and not wound again.
I will pray for you. Father, I thank you for this honest confession. I ask that you would grant complete forgiveness through the blood of Jesus, and give assurance of that cleansing. Wash this conscience and make it white as snow. Give humility and wisdom to ask for forgiveness from this friend, and give grace to accept whatever answer comes with a spirit of forgiveness. Heal what has been hurt by harsh words, and guide this relationship according to your will. Teach both hearts to walk in love and to forgive as you have forgiven us. Set this heart free from bitterness and guilt and help it to rest in your mercy. In Jesus name, amen.
