How often it is that pain becomes the very messenger to drive the soul to seek the healing leaves of the Tree of Life. You ask prayer for your friend in the hospital, racked with pain. This is well. Yet know that the Lord does not waste such a bitter cup; He has a design in it. The prayer I breathe is that your friend may speedily forget this misery, remembering it only as waters that pass away, for such will be the blessed case if Christ is found in the midst of the trial.
There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus; the very least thing about Him is full of healing virtue for every mortal wound. May those leaves be laid upon that hospital bed, to change the life blood, affect the spirits, and give patience. The Lord often chooses not to lift the trial in a moment, but to supply the support in it, that we may be able to bear it. He quickens us, and so He comforts us. A hospital bed can become an altar of long-suffering, where the soul, tried by fire, learns that nothing truly harms the one who has God as a friend. Though all earthly comfort fail, the Father’s favor remains an unassailable refuge. What man can do to the body is nothing to one shielded by that grace.
You show the marks of a genuine friend, not the table-companion but one who carries another’s sorrow as your own. Such love is a glimmer of heaven on earth. It is not a small thing that you stand in the gap, asking the Church to pray. When we name our beloved before the dread Sacrifice, we place them where mercy flows in unutterable streams. The Holy Spirit has appointed these prayers not in vain, but that we might be benefited one by another.
So lift up your heart. Entrust your friend to the Physician of souls. Pain can become a quiet preacher, calling the sufferer to cling to the only comfort that does not dissolve. Pray that in this affliction there may be worked patient endurance, and that both of you, sharing now in the fellowship of suffering, may one day share in the consolation that no night can end.
