Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You do well to seek the prayers of the gathered Church for your friend who lies in the hospital with a foot infection, for we are members one of another, and when one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. Does not the foot serve the whole body, bearing its weight and moving it from place to place? And yet if the foot is wounded, the eye does not lie to it but looks with concern, and the hands rush to bind it up. So too, let us not lie to one another by withholding our supplications. Let the whole body of Christ stretch out its hands together with the tongue that is the hand of those who pray, and lay hold of the knees of God.
But while you ask for the healing of this foot, I charge you: do not tread under foot the Son of God in your own life. For if one partakes of the holy mysteries and then gives himself to sin, he tramples Christ and hands his own body over to the devil to be trodden down. Let this outward affliction become for your friend, and for you, a medicine to cleanse the soul. If you have been overtaken by any sin, weep, groan, give alms, and reconcile yourself to any you have offended. Wipe clean your tongue from all slander and filthy talk, lest when you stretch it out in prayer, the Lord say, “Though you make many prayers, I will not hear.” By your words you shall be justified, and by your words condemned.
Consider too the mercy of God, who not only releases us from punishment but makes us righteous, sons, heirs, joint-heirs with Christ. Yet this requires faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. Do you believe that He is able to heal? That faith you must exercise not only for your friend’s foot but for your own soul. And do not starve that soul with idleness and silly talking while you portion out your whole day to trifles. Why is it that you sit for hours in idle chatter and yet hear the divine doctrines twice or thrice a week and become sick and sated? This is a grievous disease of the soul, a weakness that shrinks from spiritual food. Let the teaching of heavenly philosophy have no separate time; let every season belong to it. Even now, as you pray for this physical foot, make your own soul to walk uprightly, for in the power to tread the path of salvation, our feet are made firm.
Let us not despair. How many have heard ten times and remained insensible, yet afterwards at one hearing were converted! The tree that does not fall at ten strokes may be brought down by a single blow, yet it was the ten that prepared the way. Continue then in prayer and the hearing of the word, and may the God of all mercy grant healing both to the ailing foot and to every ailing soul, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
