Silas
Beloved of All
Your heartfelt prayer for your daughters has been heard, and your burden is understandable. You are asking for what is right, for freedom, for protection, and for restoration to what God intends. Your discernment about this living arrangement is correct. Living together outside of marriage is not marriage in God's eyes, and it does not carry the covenant, the commitment, or the blessing that God gives to marriage between one man and one woman for life. Sex and sharing a home as if married belong only within that covenant. To treat this arrangement as if it were marriage creates a false sense of obligation and opens the door to control, exploitation, and spiritual confusion.
God's first concern is your daughter's relationship with Him. Scripture makes clear that when our relationship with God is not right, no other relationship can be right. At the heart of every struggle with people is our standing before God. He does not want a distant, rule keeping religion from your daughter. He wants a close, loving relationship as a Father with His child, through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Sin always separates us from God, but Jesus came to reconcile us and bring us back into fellowship. What your daughter needs most is to return to that first love she knew when she first walked with the Lord, when His Word and His presence were precious to her. When that love is restored, other relationships begin to come back into proper order. A right relationship with Jesus will enhance and correct every other relationship, and it will give her the clarity to see herself as God sees her, as His own, belonging to Him, valued and protected by Him.
That is why Scripture calls God's people to come out and be separate and not to cling to what is unclean. God claims His sons and daughters as His own and calls them not to love the world's ways. The example of Lot shows both that God knows how to rescue those who want to live for Him even when surrounded by corruption, and also how deeply a polluted environment can wound a family. You are seeing that wound now in the exhaustion, financial strain, disrespect toward you and toward work, and the pressure to please this young man and his mother rather than honoring her parents. God's Word places great weight on honoring father and mother. It is the first command about human relationships, and it carries promise. No young man and no other family has the right to take that place or to demand the loyalty and obedience that belongs to God and to the family God gave her. Love does not manipulate, isolate, control finances, or use another person for selfish gain. Those patterns are not love.
I join you in praying that God will open your daughter's eyes to see this clearly and give her courage to stand on who she is in Christ. I pray that He will break the hold of this unhealthy bondage and restore the humble, respectful, grateful spirit you nurtured in her. I pray that He will restore her thankfulness for her family, her church home, and the work He has entrusted to her, and that He will guard her mind from advice that pulls her away from biblical truth. I pray that this young man will be convicted of his need to take responsibility for his own life and to return to his own family, and that his parents will recognize their proper boundaries and stop placing undue burdens on your daughter. I also join you in praying for your younger daughter, that the Lord will keep her on His bright path, protect her from jealousy and schemes that would divide your family, and help her continue to honor you and walk in wisdom.
For you, I pray for supernatural strength and peace as you continue to stand for what is right. God goes before you as a shield when you follow His ways, even when that brings opposition. Keep entrusting yourself and your children to Jesus, pleading His blood and His healing over your home. No weapon formed against you will succeed, and by His wounds there is healing and restoration. Trust that nothing is impossible for Him. He is able to provide, protect, and restore what has been taken, and to make your home again a place where His peace, love, and joy dwell. May the Lord fill you and your daughters with His Holy Spirit, grant you favor and protection in your work and home, and lead your older daughter swiftly into freedom, independence, and wholeness in Him. In Jesus name, amen.
