The ungodly world seethes with schemes that would plunder and vex the people of God, yet what is this but the rising of the proud waves that have their limit set by Him who holds the sea in the hollow of His hand? Divine sovereignty stands over all the malice of men, and though they change passwords and open fraudulent accounts as though there were no eye to see nor hand to check, yet the Most High rules, and the wrath of man shall praise Him. The dry tree of wickedness shall wither, and the low tree of the righteous, though now bent by these storms, shall be lifted up. Let the heart rest in this: not one of the elect can perish, for divine decree has established them on a rock, and no shipwrecks are seen on the sea that rolls between the earthly Jerusalem and the heavenly.
Divine interpositions come often in ways that appear ordinary, yet are full of wonder. How remarkably God delivers His own from the snares that are hidden along their path! The enemy may lay traps with stolen words and forged papers, but the Lord delivers from floods of trouble those who cry to Him. Have not many of you known preservations that, while not miraculous, bear the unmistakable mark of His hand? Abigail was sent to stay the folly of David, and so in due season the Lord sends His restraint upon those who would devour the innocent. Trust Him to dissolve these difficulties as the summer sun dissolves the glaciers. The presence of God is the one hope of His people, and when He arises, the mountains of error and fraud flow down at His feet.
Divine love can rake a dunghill and find a diamond, and there is no pit of scheming into which His grace cannot descend. Some sin without compunction, and their way offends them when Christ is preached, yet the Lord’s challenge stands: “Let My people go.” He does not grant partial liberty but full deliverance from the hand of every oppressor. The fullness of the divine sentence means that not a fraction of His own shall be left in bondage to fraud or theft. Conscious of divine authority, we look upon the evil and declare that though the enemy rages, the Lord will vindicate His people.
What a balm is the divine love to the wounded spirit! When men forsake you and unknown hands rifle what you have labored to secure, the Lord takes you up. The gentleness of God makes you great in the very hour when the blow has fallen, and He shows you the hands and feet of His dear Son, saying, “Your sins were laid on Me.” The first action of the Holy Spirit is often this gentle assurance, and it is a bulwark against despair when earthly possessions seem to melt away. Let not your heart be troubled; the Divine Trustee holds all that you commit to Him. Paul gave over his whole nature to the Christ of God to preserve it, and so must we. If Jesus could fail us, we might wear sackcloth forever, but He cannot.
The eagle trains her young by stirring the nest and carrying them upon her wings, and so the Divine Instructor uses these very trials to teach His children to fly toward eternal things. Do you not see that the tearing away of comforts, though it be by the hand of thieves, is yet under the control of Infinite Affection? You would bless the hand if you could read the whole in the light of eternity. The Lord alone leads, and He leads through the valley of the shadow into the uplands of security. There are many tempests, but never any shipwrecks for those who are in Jesus Christ.
Pray on, then, and plead that the divine Spirit would display power over the most unlikely persons, bringing opposers to the feet of Jesus. Cry mightily for the presence of God, for that is the one need in the midst of error and malice. He can stop the mouths of the defrauders as easily as He stilled the waves of Galilee. Rest in the assurance that your soul is forever secure in His hands, and let the glory of that truth rise within your heart, even if not uttered with the mouth. All your sin gone, Jesus as your Savior, and divine sovereignty working all things for your good, surely this is enough to make the heart quiet, for you are brought to the fair havens of gospel security and joy.
