Forgiveness

I think that I'm being stubborn . Please pray for me that God will remove this and give me his strength to forgive. In Jesus high name.

We thank you for your honest and humble heart in recognizing stubbornness and desiring to forgive, and we join with you in seeking God's will together in Jesus' name. It takes humility to admit this struggle, and God honors that honesty. We are glad you asked in Jesus' high name, for it is only through Him we have access to the Father and it is only through His forgiveness toward us that we can learn to forgive others.

The Word shows us how serious and how freeing forgiveness is. Jesus taught us, For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matt 6:14-15. And we are exhorted, And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Eph 4:32. Again it says, bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Col 3:13.

We understand that stubbornness in not forgiving is often rooted in pride, hurt, and a hard heart that wants to hold on to the offense as a form of protection or justice. Yet God calls us to release that burden to Him, not because the hurt was not real, but because He is the just judge and because we have been forgiven so great a debt ourselves. Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions. Mark 11:25. Forgiveness is not a feeling we muster on our own, it is an act of obedience empowered by the Holy Spirit, and God promises to give us a new heart when we ask Him. He says, I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. Ezek 36:26.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see the struggle with stubbornness and the sincere desire to forgive. We ask You to soften the heart, to remove pride and hardness, and to pour out Your grace and strength. Lord, help to forgive even as Christ forgave, not by human willpower but by Your Spirit at work within. We pray that You would heal the wound that caused this pain, take away bitterness, and fill this heart with Your tender mercy and peace. Grant the strength to release the offense into Your hands, to bless those who have caused hurt, and to walk in freedom. We claim Your promise that we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us. Phil 4:13. Let Your love and forgiveness flow through this life as a testimony of Your power. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to bring this before the Lord daily in prayer, to speak forgiveness even when feelings have not yet caught up, and to meditate on how much Christ has forgiven you. As you choose obedience, feelings will follow and God will give you His strength step by step. Do not condemn yourself for the struggle, but keep surrendering it to Him, and He will be faithful to complete this good work in you.

We were moved by your honesty in naming that stubborn place in your heart and asking God for His strength instead of trying to push through on your own. That willingness itself is a good step.

One thing that has helped many of us is understanding that forgiveness often comes in two layers. There is the quiet decision to release the debt and not hold on to revenge or avoidance, and then there is the slower softening of the emotions underneath like resentment or hurt. The decision can be made in a moment with God's help, while the feelings often take longer to catch up and can rise and fall day to day. Feeling stuck does not mean you have failed, it often just means your heart is still processing.

When you notice that stubbornness rising, it can help to pause for a few unhurried minutes and simply tell God, I choose to forgive this person as an act before You, and I ask You to keep shaping my heart toward compassion in Your timing. Some find it meaningful to also remember a time they were forgiven and how much freedom that brought, and to offer that same gift to another as they are able.

We are with you in this.

Father, we bring our friend before You and thank You for the honest desire to forgive. Please lift the stubbornness and give strength to make the decision to forgive, and gently work in the emotions over time. Draw near, bring peace, and help each next step be clear. In Jesus name, amen.

Your honest confession is itself a hopeful sign, for the desire to forgive is a work of grace within you. To feel your own stubbornness and to cry for strength to overcome it shows that the Spirit of God is striving with you, and where He works He will give the victory.

There is forgiveness with God, that He may be feared, and it is present forgiveness to be had now. Hear His own word, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake. He does not forgive you for your sake, as if you had made yourself worthy, but for His own sake, according to the riches of His grace. If you have been the chief of sinners you may have the chief of sinners forgiveness, and God can bestow it now. It is complete forgiveness, sincere and lasting. He blots out all sin, and He will not accuse you again tomorrow for what He has forgiven today. Would Christ have taught you to pray, Forgive us our sins as we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us, if there were no pardon to be had. Does God mock men by teaching beggars to beg when He intends to refuse. No, He delights in mercy and is ready to forgive freely all who come to Christ.

And because you have been so freely and so greatly forgiven, you are called to forgive as you have been forgiven. For God to forgive is something great, for us to forgive, though some think it great, should be regarded as a very small matter. Consider what has been forgiven you, how much outward and inward sin has been blotted out, and you will find that to forgive ought to become as natural as to open your hands. The word to you is forbearing one another and forgiving one another, even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. As it is more blessed to give than to receive, so to forgive rises a stage higher than to be forgiven. To be forgiven is as the root, to forgive is the flower.

Do not let the stubbornness remain and harden. It is a deadly thing that would keep you from the sweetness of both receiving and giving forgiveness. Bring it at once to the Lord who can take sin out of you as well as take the penalty from you. He not only forgave you at the first, but He continues daily to forgive, and He will give you strength to do what He commands.

I will pray for you, that God will remove the hardness and stubbornness of heart and give you His strength to forgive, even as you have been forgiven in Christ.

O Father, for Thine own name sake blot out the transgressions of this Thy child and give present peace through the blood of Jesus. Soften the heart that now feels its own stubbornness, take away the stony heart and give a heart of flesh. Grant strength not of nature but of grace, to forbear and to forgive freely, even as Christ has forgiven. Let forgiveness be made easy by the sight of Thine own great mercy, and let it be complete and sincere, to Thy glory. Keep this soul looking ever unto Jesus, who is exalted to give repentance and forgiveness of sins, and let Thy forgiveness lead to holy fear and love. In Jesus high name we ask it, Amen.

Your honesty in naming this stubbornness before God is itself pleasing to Him, and He hears your desire to be freed from it.

Scripture teaches us that forgiveness is not a matter of bodily strength or outward resources, but of the will. God asks only that we be willing, and He supplies what we lack. When we pray, forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors, we are asking for the same mercy we extend to others. If we hold onto resentment, we cannot pray that prayer with confidence, but if we choose to forgive, even when it is hard, we can come before Him boldly, trusting in His mercy.

Remember how great His forgiveness toward us has been. We had nothing to offer Him, and we were still enemies to Him, yet He forgave us not at small cost but at the sacrifice of His own Son. Christ bore our sins and carried them to the Father not to condemn us but to forgive us. Since God has so freely forgiven us, we are called to imitate Him and to be kind and tender hearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave us.

It is natural to feel stubborn or slow to forgive. God knows this struggle and does not turn away from a heart that wants to obey. He is far more merciful than we are, and He promises to help those who ask Him with sincerity and perseverance. To truly call upon Him is to come with an honest heart, grieving over sin and desiring to be set free from it, and to keep praying until He answers.

I pray for you now.

Father in heaven, we thank You that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and that by His blood our sins are forgiven and covered. We bring before You this heart that confesses stubbornness and longs to forgive. Remove what is hard and unyielding, soften this heart by Your Holy Spirit, and give strength to will what You command. Teach us to forgive as You have forgiven us, to let go of revenge and resentment, and to walk in love as Your beloved children. Help us to forgive fully, not only with words but from the heart, trusting that You will also forgive us according to Your great mercy. Grant perseverance in prayer and peace in place of bitterness. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Continue to bring this to God daily, and when the memory of the wrong returns, choose again to release it to Him. He is faithful to complete the work He has begun in you.
