We join with you in asking God for His strength to forgive, and we thank you for coming in Jesus' high and holy name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we receive forgiveness ourselves.
We know how difficult forgiveness can feel when the hurt is deep, and we commend you for desiring to obey God in this rather than holding onto bitterness. Scripture teaches us that forgiveness is not merely a feeling but an act of obedience and grace, flowing from the forgiveness we have already received. Ephesians 4:32 says And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. And Colossians 3:13 says bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Jesus also taught us in Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Forgiveness does not mean that what was done was right or that trust is automatically restored, but it does mean we release the debt and the right to vengeance into God's hands, for Romans 12:19 reminds us that vengeance belongs to the Lord. We cannot do this in our own strength, but God is faithful to provide what He commands. Philippians 4:13 says I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one who longs to forgive. Lord, You see the pain and the wound, and You know the struggle to let go. We ask that You pour out Your grace and Your strength upon this heart. Soften what has been hardened by hurt and fill this life with Your Holy Spirit, that forgiveness may flow not from human effort but from Your love within. Help us to remember how much we have been forgiven, that we may forgive freely as Christ forgave us. Take away bitterness, resentment and anger, and replace them with peace, mercy and healing. Give wisdom to set healthy boundaries where needed while still walking in love and obedience. May Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard this heart and mind in Christ Jesus. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, our Savior and our example of perfect forgiveness, Amen.
We encourage you to continue to bring this burden to the Lord daily in prayer, to speak forgiveness even when the feelings have not yet followed, and to meditate on the cross where Christ forgave even those who crucified Him. As you choose to obey, God will strengthen you step by step and bring healing to your heart.

The other is the slower softening of the heart, where resentment and anger gradually lose their grip and are replaced by more peace and even compassion. The first can be made in a moment before God, the second often comes and goes and needs time.
If it would help, you might try a simple next step in prayer when you are alone. Tell God plainly who and what you are choosing to release to Him today, that you will not carry the repayment yourself. When the painful feelings rise again later, as they likely will, just gently remind Him and yourself of that decision without judging yourself for still feeling the ache.

Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God-conscious-solution-focused-heart-mind-spirit-and-attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. God, all that I have asked of You, in this prayer, please do the same for the writer of the prayer, all those who love and care about me, and all those I love and care about. Your longing for strength to forgive is itself a work of grace in your heart, and it is a prayer that God delights to answer. For there is forgiveness with Him, and He has commanded you to pray for it and to show it, as it is written, forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Think how great His forgiveness is toward you. He not only forgave you at the first all your sins, but He continues daily to forgive, and He does it freely, for His own name's sake, not because you have earned it. He forgives the chief of sinners, and His forgiveness is complete. When you remember how much you have been forgiven, so much outward sin and inward sin covered by the blood of Christ, then to forgive another, though some think it great, should be regarded as a very small matter in comparison.
For God to forgive is something great, for us to forgive is the flower that grows from the root of having been forgiven. It is more blessed to give than to receive, and so to forgive rises even higher in experience than to be forgiven. He will give you strength to do it as you look to Jesus, who is higher still, and who went forth conquering and to conquer. You may go from strength to strength as you climb the sacred hill of grace, ever looking up to Him.
Do not let the sun go down upon your wrath, but come to the mercy seat even now. He who has forgiven you will enable you to forbear and to forgive one another, as He has forgiven you. Ask Him and He will not withhold the grace to do what He commands.
I pray for you now, that the Lord who is ready to forgive would fill your heart with His Spirit, that you may know more deeply how freely you are pardoned through Christ, and that by that knowledge you may have strength to forgive freely, fully, and from the heart, to the glory of His name. May He take sin out of you and not only free you from its penalty, but deliver you from its power, and make forgiveness become natural to you as to open your hands. In Jesus name, Amen.
