Forgiveness

I would really appreciate your prayers at this time. I would like to experience greater freedom in terms of forgiveness toward my mother and to feel peace about it.

We hear your heart and we join with you in seeking greater freedom and peace in forgiveness toward your mother, and we bring this burden before the Lord together in Jesus name.

We understand how deep and complex the relationship between a child and a mother can be, and how hurt can linger and make forgiveness feel difficult. Yet Scripture calls us to forgive as we have been forgiven, not because the hurt was not real, but because we have received such great mercy ourselves. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32 Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Colossians 3:13 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15 Forgiveness is an act of obedience and release, it frees our own heart from bitterness and entrusts justice and healing to God, and it does not mean that what happened was right or that boundaries are not needed, but it means we choose to release the debt to Him.

We also hear your longing for peace, and we know that true peace comes as we surrender that pain to Christ. When we forgive, God promises to guard our hearts with His peace that goes beyond our understanding. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 As we honor our parents as the Lord commands, Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. Exodus 20:12, we do so not by denying the past but by allowing God to heal us so we can love with His love and walk in freedom.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and experience this forgiveness and peace for ourselves. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 We are forgiven because Christ died for our sins and rose again, and when we put our trust in Him we receive forgiveness and the power to forgive others. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to You. You see the hurt carried toward their mother and the desire for freedom. We ask that You pour out Your grace to help them forgive fully from the heart as You have forgiven us. Heal the wounds that still ache, remove bitterness and resentment, and replace them with Your love and mercy. Grant them Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and help them to walk in freedom and wholeness. Teach them to honor You in this relationship while trusting You with boundaries and healing, and draw them ever closer to Jesus where true forgiveness and peace are found. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus, our Savior and mediator, amen.

We encourage you to continue to bring this to the Lord daily, to pray for your mother even as you seek healing, and to ask Him to show you any root of bitterness that needs to be released. As you choose obedience in forgiveness, often as a daily decision and not just a feeling, God will bring the peace and freedom you are longing for in His time.

We are grateful you shared this desire for greater freedom and peace toward your mother. Wanting to forgive and still feeling the ache at times can be confusing, and we appreciate your honesty.

One thing that has helped many people is recognizing that forgiveness often happens on two levels. One is a decision, a quiet settled intention to let go of getting even and to begin seeing the other person as someone of value before God, even while still acknowledging the hurt. The other is emotional, where resentment and bitterness are gradually softened and replaced with more compassion and calm. That second part rarely happens all at once. It can rise and fall with memories, conversations, or anniversaries, and needing time does not mean your decision was not real.

It can also help to remember that forgiving does not automatically mean everything is as it was before, or that painful actions were okay. It is possible to forgive in your heart while still needing wise boundaries.

If it would help, you might notice in the coming days when those heavier feelings surface and simply name them honestly before the Lord, reminding yourself of the direction you have chosen, without demanding that you feel completely peaceful in that moment.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Thank You for the work You have already begun in their heart toward their mother. Grant them gentleness with themselves as You continue that work, wisdom for each step, and a growing sense of Your peace guarding them. In Jesus name, amen.

Your longing for greater freedom in forgiving your mother and for peace in your heart has been heard, and we bring it before the Lord with you.

There is forgiveness with God, and therefore we may speak of it with certainty. The Scripture saith, There is forgiveness with Thee. It does not say there is forgiveness for this sin or for that alone, but there is forgiveness, full and complete, without limit or abridging word. When a soul trusts in Christ, the Lord promises oblivion to all debt, forgiveness of the whole of sin, so complete that it is as though it had never been. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, and it yields a calm so deep, so profound, that it can only be called the peace of God which passeth all understanding.

You desire to forgive as you have been forgiven, and this is the pattern set before us. Even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. He not only forgave us at the first, but He continues daily to forgive, and His forgiveness is eternal. He does not forgive and afterwards accuse. To copy Him in forgiving those who have trespassed against us is not a degrading duty. Revenge is paltry, forgiveness is great minded and gloriously ennobling. It is as it were a joint stock business of mutual forgiveness, and members of the household of faith should take large shares in it. Some of us have had so much manifest forgiveness, so much outward sin forgiven, that for us to forgive ought to be as natural as to open our hands.

And with forgiveness the Lord gives peace. You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee. This is peace, perfect peace, even in this dark world of sin, even when sorrows surge around, even with duties pressing. Then had your peace been as a river, and your righteousness as the waves of the sea. Keep your mind stayed upon Christ, trust Him to do for you what you cannot do for yourself, and to work in you the willingness and the power to release the debt you feel your mother owes you.

Let us pray for you.

O Lord, Thou with whom there is forgiveness, look upon this wounded and burdened heart. Thou knowest the long bondage and the labor with which Thou hast brought down this soul, and Thou knowest the desire to forgive freely and to be at rest. Grant now a fresh sense of Thine own complete and surprising forgiveness in Christ, that as this dear one has received so great a forgiveness, so also may the grace be given to forgive even as Christ hath forgiven. Speak peace to the soul, keep the mind stayed upon Thyself, and let perfect peace rule within. Heal the memory, soften what is hard, and give freedom where there has been captivity. May the forgiveness that is with Thee become the forgiveness that flows through this life, to Thy glory. In the name of Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who died the Just for the unjust to bring us to God, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your desire for greater freedom in forgiveness toward your mother and for peace about it is a good and holy desire, and we have prayed for you with thankfulness that you brought it to the Lord.

Scripture places great weight on both honoring father and mother as God commanded and on pursuing peace. To honor does not mean to pretend that hurt did not happen, but to show reverence toward the place God gave to parents while walking in truth and grace. And we are called to follow peace with all people and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. That peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but a gift Christ Himself gives. He said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, a peace different from what the world gives, a peace that makes a way for love and restores the heart to God and to others.

We pray that God will give you that kind of peace in this relationship. Peace is the mother of good things and the foundation of joy, and those who make peace are called sons of God because they reflect what the Son of God came to do when He reconciled heaven and earth. Where peace is present, the whole life is kept in health and order, and where thoughts are at rest before God, the heart can breathe freely.

We have asked the Lord to do this work in you:

Father in heaven, we thank You for Your mercy to us through Jesus Christ, by whom we have received forgiveness we did not deserve. We ask You to pour that same mercy into our sister's heart toward her mother. Give her grace to release every burden of resentment and to entrust both justice and healing to You. Teach her to forgive as she has been forgiven, not by her own strength but by Your Spirit. Fill her with Your peace that guards heart and mind, and let that peace prepare the way for love. Help her to honor her mother in a way that pleases You, with wisdom, boundaries, and kindness, and to walk in holiness and freedom from sin. Restore what has been broken as far as it depends on her, and let her know the true freedom that belongs to those who are Yours. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

If the hurt is deep or long standing, freedom in forgiveness often grows over time as you keep bringing it to God in prayer, speaking honestly to Him about the pain, choosing to release the debt again when memories return, and asking Him to bless you with a sober and gentle heart. It can also help to remain rooted in Scripture, in regular prayer, and in fellowship with mature believers who can walk with you and encourage you. If conversation with your mother is possible and wise, seek it with gentleness and with a desire for peace, trusting God with the outcome.

May the Lord who loves you continue to form in you a forgiving heart and keep you in His perfect peace as you trust in Him.
