Forgiveness

We hear your heart and we join with you in seeking the strength to forgive, and we are encouraged that you asked in Jesus' high name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father.

We understand how heavy unforgiveness can feel and how impossible it can seem to release it in our own strength. Yet God calls us to forgive because He first forgave us so graciously. Scripture tells us, Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Eph 4:32, and bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do Col 3:13. Forgiveness is not saying what was done was right or that the hurt did not matter, it is choosing to release the debt to God and trust Him with justice and healing. Jesus also reminds us, For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses Matt 6:14-15, and Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions Mark 11:25.

We know you cannot do this alone, and you do not have to. God promises strength for what He commands, for I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me Phil 4:13.

We pray together with you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one who desires to forgive. Lord, You see the wound and the pain carried, and You see the willing heart that wants to obey You. Pour out Your grace and fill this heart with Your Holy Spirit. Soften what feels hard, heal what feels broken, and grant the strength to release this burden to You. Help us to remember how much we have been forgiven in Christ, so that we may extend that same mercy to others. Teach us to forgive from the heart, not in our own power but in Yours, and set us free from bitterness and resentment. Let Your peace guard our heart and mind as we choose obedience day by day. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

We encourage you to keep bringing this before the Lord daily in prayer, even when the feelings linger. Forgiveness is often a process of choosing to obey and then allowing God to change the emotions over time. Continue to dwell in His Word, ask Him to bless and even pray for the one who hurt you, and trust Him to do the healing work only He can do. He is faithful and He will give you the strength as you lean on Christ.

Thank you for sharing this honest prayer. Asking God for strength to forgive when the hurt is still real takes courage, and we are grateful you brought it to Him.

We have found it helps to remember forgiveness often happens in two parts. There is a decision, a quiet choice before God to release the debt and not hold onto revenge, even while painful feelings are still there. Then there is the slower, emotional side, where resentment and anger are gradually softened as God works in our hearts. That second part rarely happens all at once. It can rise and fall with days and circumstances, and that does not mean your decision was not real.

Forgiveness also does not automatically mean everything goes back to how it was. You can choose to forgive while still needing wisdom about boundaries and trust going forward.

If it helps, you might set aside a few quiet minutes this week to simply tell God in your own words that you choose to forgive and ask Him to continue shaping your heart toward peace in His timing. If the hurt feels heavy, it can also help to share it with a trusted pastor or counselor who can walk with you.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Thank You for the desire You have placed in their heart to forgive. Give them strength for the decision today and gentleness with themselves as emotions heal over time. Fill them with Your peace and keep them close to You. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Your prayer for strength to forgive is itself a token that grace is at work within you, for the natural heart loves to nurse its wound and to withhold forgiveness, but the renewed heart cries to be made like Christ.

There is forgiveness with God, that He may be feared, and there is forgiveness to be had now through Jesus Christ His Son. He declares, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions, and He does it not for your sake as though you had earned it, but for His own sake and for the sake of His dear Son who bore your sins upon the cross. If you have tasted that sweet forgiveness, honey itself is tasteless compared with it, and you know that He not only forgave you at the first but continues daily to forgive.

And because you have been so freely forgiven, you are now called to forgive as you have been forgiven. Scripture says, forbearing one another and forgiving one another, even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. For God to forgive is something great, for it cost Him the blood of His Son, but for us to forgive should be regarded as a very small matter. It is more blessed to forgive than even to be forgiven, for to be forgiven is as the root, but to forgive is the flower.

You confess you have not strength of your own to do this, and you are right. We may go from strength to strength in duties of piety, but Jesus is higher still, and evermore we must be looking up to Him as we climb the sacred hill of grace. He who commands you to pray, Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, will not mock you by teaching you to ask for what He will not give. He will give you the power to release your debtor even as He has released you from a debt you could never pay.

May the Lord now work in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. May He show you anew the completeness and freeness of His own pardon toward you in Christ, and by that sight melt your heart into tenderness toward those who have trespassed against you. May He keep you from provoking and from being easily provoked, and make you ready to forgive, forbearing in love, that you may walk worthy of Him who has forgiven you all trespasses.

We pray that God our Father, for Christ's sake, will grant you a soft and gracious spirit, strength to forgive from the heart, and peace in the act of forgiving, and that you may know more fully the joy of being conformed to the image of His Son who prayed even for His enemies.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
