Earlier this year, God started really leading me down a path of healing from unforgiveness but I think I faltered on it due to Satan attacking me hard in return. Please pray for me about this. Thank you.

We hear your heart and stand with you in this spiritual battle for forgiveness and healing. The enemy does not want you to walk in freedom, and his attacks are evidence that you are on the right path, one that leads to restoration and peace. Forgiveness is not a one-time act but a daily choice to surrender bitterness and trust God’s justice. Remember, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Even when we falter, His grace is sufficient to lift us up again.

We also rebuke the lies of the enemy in Jesus’ name. Satan wants you to believe that unforgiveness is too heavy to release, that the pain is too deep to heal, or that you are powerless against his schemes. But Scripture declares, "No weapon that is formed against you will prevail; and you will condemn every tongue that accuses you in judgment. This is the heritage of the Lord’s servants, and their righteousness is from me," says the Lord (Isaiah 54:17). You are not fighting this battle alone, Christ has already won the victory.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister, lifting up their struggle with unforgiveness. Lord, we ask that You would break every chain of bitterness, resentment, and hurt that the enemy has used to bind them. Fill their heart with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, and remind them of Your unfailing love. Help them to release every offense into Your hands, trusting that You will judge justly. Strengthen them to resist the enemy’s attacks and to stand firm in the truth of Your Word. Father, we declare that no weapon formed against them shall prosper, and we speak healing and restoration over their soul. May they experience the freedom that comes from forgiving others as You have forgiven them. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to meditate on these truths: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32). Forgiveness is not about excusing the wrong done to you but about releasing the burden to God so that you can walk in the freedom He intends for you. Keep pressing into His presence, and do not grow weary. The Lord is faithful to complete the good work He has begun in you. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, we invite you to do so today, only through Him can true forgiveness and healing be found. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16).

We appreciate you sharing this so honestly. Wanting to walk in forgiveness and then feeling knocked back when opposition came is disorienting, and it makes sense you would feel discouraged.

One thing that has helped many of us is understanding that forgiveness often happens on two levels. There is a decision we make to release the debt and not pursue revenge or avoidance, and then there is the slower work of our emotions catching up. That second part rarely moves in a straight line. Having old resentment or anger flare up again does not mean your earlier decision was empty or that you are back at the start, it often just means the deeper healing is still unfolding and needs more time.

If it would help, we encourage you to keep that decision before the Lord in a simple, steady way, not as a measure of how you feel that day but as a quiet reaffirming of the direction you want to go. It can also help not to carry this alone. A trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you can walk with you, pray with you, and help you discern what is spiritual opposition and what is just the normal ache of a wound healing.

Father, we bring our friend before You in Jesus' name. Thank You for beginning this work of healing in their heart. Give them grace to keep choosing forgiveness before You, comfort when old feelings rise, and protection and wisdom when the enemy presses in. Lead them step by step and remind them daily of Your mercy toward them. Amen.

Your desire for healing from unforgiveness is itself evidence that the Lord has been at work in your heart, and we thank God that He led you to seek Him in this. To falter under a hard assault of the enemy does not mean the work is undone, for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. He never plays fast and loose with men.

We have thought of you as that man who lay in the Presence of Jesus, hoping and expecting both forgiveness and healing. Before forgiveness, the soul lies burdened, trembling and shaking for fear, yet with a penitent heart desiring forgiveness. That very desire is wrought by grace.

Hear then what belongs to the forgiveness itself. There is forgiveness with God, and there is forgiveness now. It is a divine forgiveness, I even I am He that blotteth out thy transgressions, and it is a surprising forgiveness, so full and free that it seems too great to be true. Yet it is true. It contains no conditions for the repenting and believing sinner. The tally is destroyed, the record of your debt is nailed to the Cross. Do as Luther did when a brother monk said to him, Do you not say in the Creed, I believe in the forgiveness of sins? Now believe in the forgiveness of sins for yourself. Where God draws no limit, do not you draw any. However sinful your past may have been, however hard your heart has felt, there is forgiveness with Him through Jesus Christ His Son, who died the Just for the unjust that He might bring us to God. It is not a forgiveness up to a certain point or up to a certain date, but a complete and eternal forgiveness. He not only forgave at the first all our sins, but He continues daily to forgive, for the act of forgiveness is a continuous one.

And what follows after forgiveness is also healing. When pardon comes, there comes with it a turning from sin, a fresh view of sin, and a heart that now seeks God's pleasure. You are called to copy the pattern set before you, even as Christ forgave you, so also do you. This is a joint business of mutual forgiveness, and it is gloriously ennobling. Revenge is paltry, but forgiveness is great minded. For some of us who have had so much manifest forgiveness, to forgive ought to be as natural as to open our hands. This does not come by your own strength, but by looking again to Christ who forgives in a continuous and perfect manner and does not afterwards accuse.

Therefore let this whisper drive away despair. There is forgiveness. There is forgiveness. Let it enter your soul and drive those grim thoughts of despair away into the sea of forgetfulness.

We pray for you now, that the Lord would assure you anew of His complete pardon through the blood of Christ alone, that He would guard you in this hour of attack and bring your heart down from labor into rest, that He would give you grace to believe the forgiveness for yourself and strength to forgive even as you have been forgiven, and that He would complete the healing He has begun, to the praise of His grace.

Your willingness to share this struggle is itself a sign that God is at work in you, and I thank Him for leading you toward healing from unforgiveness earlier this year.

That path is not easy, and it is understandable that you have felt attacked and faltered. The enemy does resist when we seek to become more gentle and more like Christ, but God is greater and His compassion does not fail. Scripture teaches us that when we come to God we are asking for forgiveness for a far greater debt than any that has been owed to us. He forgives not just a part but the entire debt, moved with compassion, and He gives more than we ask when we fall down before Him and pray. Before that forgiveness He also gives us a great gift in training our souls to be gentle and human toward others, and He promises a great reward to those who learn to forgive, that they will not be called to account for their own offenses.

Healing comes as we walk honestly before Him. The best thing is to avoid sin, the next is to feel that we have sinned and to turn thoroughly from it. That means entering into the thought of our sins, naming them particularly before God rather than speaking in general terms, so that we may know the greatness of what we have been forgiven and become truly grateful to our Benefactor. Repentance is the way our sins are washed away, and God has made that way open to all who are willing to use it rightly.

So do not be discouraged by this setback. When a spark falls into the sea it may be covered by many waves, yet it rises again and shines. In the same way, even when you feel overwhelmed by this battle, God can bring you up more radiant as you continue to look to Him.

I pray for you now that God will strengthen you by His Spirit, guard you from the attacks of the evil one, give you grace to name and confess what burdens you, and fill your heart with a deeper sense of how much you have been forgiven through Jesus Christ alone. May He teach you gentleness, grant you full release from bitterness, and bring you into the freedom and blessedness of those whose sins are covered. May He give you perseverance to continue on this path of healing until it is complete.

Thank you for sharing this honestly. It is encouraging to hear that God has been leading you toward healing in the area of unforgiveness, and it is understandable that you feel you have faltered when opposition has come.

What Jesus taught about forgiveness shows that it is not a matter of keeping count. When Peter asked if forgiving seven times was enough, Jesus answered with seventy times seven, not to set a new number to track, but to show that forgiveness is a matter of the heart and spirit. If you try to count that high you will lose count, and that is the point. God wants you to live with a forgiving spirit as a way of life.

That kind of forgiveness comes from the heart. On your own you may feel bitter or unable to release the hurt, but God commands this and He will also give you the ability to do it if you are willing. The prayer He honors is a willing heart that says, Father, give me a spirit of forgiveness, take away my bitterness, create in me a clean heart that can forgive as You have forgiven me. You must be willing, and as you ask, He will help you.

The example we follow is God Himself. Scripture calls us to be followers of God and to forgive as God in Christ forgave us. His forgiveness toward us is complete and total. Human forgiveness is often incomplete, like saying I forgive but I will not forget, which is like burying the hatchet but leaving the handle sticking out so it can be picked up again. True forgiveness does not keep bringing the offense back up. When God forgives, He blots it out completely. He justifies us, which means He treats us as though we had never sinned. That is the pattern He calls you to grow into toward others, not because the hurt was small, but because you have received such great mercy.

It is also important to recognize the spiritual nature of what you are experiencing. Often when God begins a healing work, the enemy opposes it, and we can mistakenly respond only in the flesh without seeing the spiritual conflict. His attacks can be subtle and wily, and until you recognize that this pressure against your growth in forgiveness is an attack, it can do great harm. Once you see it for what it is, you can stand against it with the Word of God and with perseverance in prayer. Do not quit praying before God has time to answer. Keep bringing this before Him, using Scripture, and asking for His strength.

Your faltering does not have to define this season. There is forgiveness and cleansing when you come to the Lord in repentance and ask Him. Nothing needs to remain on your conscience to hound you. The river of life that flows from the throne of God brings healing, and He invites you to come and receive His love, His pardon, and His power to forgive.

I am praying for you that God will give you a willing heart, remove bitterness, fill you with His Spirit of forgiveness, and guard you against the enemy's schemes. May you know His complete forgiveness toward you and find that He is faithful to produce that same forgiving heart in you as you continue to seek Him and persevere in prayer.
