Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The body is crushed in a moment, as though a house collapses under one sudden blow. When such a wave of affliction breaks upon a life, the first thought is of despair, for we see only the ruin of the earthly tabernacle. Yet you must not be troubled, for the Lord who foretold tumults and sorrows assured us that nothing shakes His promises. This calamity seems to break all hope, but the light of Christ shines in this present darkness, and that darkness cannot overcome it. Where the wound is most severe, there the power of the Healer is made perfect.
We are right to pray for the mending of the spine and the restoration of the body, for God sometimes restores these things when His wrestler has shown the devil that he serves the Lord for His own sake and not merely for health or comfort. Bear this trial thankfully, even when the heart protests, for if the body is recovered, it will be a crown of mercy; and if it is not, the reward stored up for patient endurance is far greater. Do not fear death, for Christ has so overcome death that He recovers those already held fast by it. The true surgery is not only of the surgeon’s knife but of the soul, and this house of affliction becomes a spiritual clinic where eternal wounds are healed even as earthly ones are dressed.
Let those who watch and wait not grow faint. Perhaps this young man, like a tree that has withstood many quiet blows, will be brought low by this single stroke and then, in his prostration, find true strength. We have seen souls that seemed insensible to ten sermons suddenly converted by one affliction, the earlier hidden workings of grace preparing the heart. Speak to him now not with harsh rebuke but with the gentle medicine that bows the neck without making it stiff, that shames fiercely held confidence into a humble hanging of the head. If his earthly sight is clouded by pain, pray that the thick humor of worldly care be cleared so he may see the true Light. The root of this trial is holy, even if the branch is broken; graft him back by prayer so that he may partake again of the nourishing sap of hope. Love for him must not cool because his body is shattered; love glories even in the wounds for which the world hides its face. Abide with him by your intercessions, and though the way be through the very gates of hell, it is possible to recover, to renew strength, and to lay hold on eternal life.
