In a day of salvation I helped you.' Behold, now is the acceptable time. Behold, now is the day of salvation." Today is the day to turn to Jesus. It is a hopeful sign when souls are stirred to seek the way of life, and the passage you cite from Romans ten is indeed a clear lamp upon the path. Yet let us take care that we do not snatch at the confession with the mouth while the heart remains a stranger to that vital work which alone can make the confession true. A man may rehearse the creed and still be lost if the inward parts are not renewed. True faith and true repentance are born together and live together; you shall never find a living faith that is not wedded to a hearty sorrow for sin, nor a repentance that is acceptable to God which does not lean its whole weight upon the finished work of Christ. Do not make a Christ out of your own repenting, nor a savior out of your own confessing. Salvation is of the Lord from first to last. Look away from the strength of your grip to the object of your faith. Christ Jesus crucified and risen, He is all your righteousness, all your hope.

Let your repentance be such as gives God the glory. There is a carnal sorrow which is merely the horror of the soul at the sight of judgment, and it leaves the heart as hard as ever. But the repentance which the Spirit works makes a man loathe the sin itself because it is an offence against infinite love. This sweet grace does not end at the wicket gate; it travels with you every step of the pilgrimage. You will repent as long as you believe, and you will believe as long as you repent. The least degree of sincere faith saves, even when it trembles like a little child, if it looks only to Jesus. The weakest faith that touches His hem is true faith, and it is the gift of God. But see that your faith is not a mere parrot cry, taken up because others are making a profession. It must be your own soul coming into conscious contact with your own Redeemer. With the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and then with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. The order is fixed. The hidden root must send up the visible shoot, or else the leaf is but painted and will soon wither.

Do not be distressed if you cannot weep as you would, or if your faith seems small. Have you faith enough to be nothing, that Christ may be everything? That is faith indeed. Rest upon Jesus Christ crucified, and not upon your prayers, your tears, your Bible reading, or your turning from sin. All these are precious fruits, but the tree upon which they grow is Christ Himself, apprehended by a simple, Spirit-wrought trust. Read the Evangelists, as you say, especially the Gospel of John, that you may see the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Gaze upon Him until your heart burns, and your eyes run over, and your tongue is loosed to speak of what you have seen. That will be the best confession.
