For Those Seeking Marriage: A Biblical Prayer

Nochaeld

Beloved of All
Father, it's not good for man to be alone, Gen 2:17, You made woman for man, 1 Cor 11:8-12, a "helper suitable for him," Gen 2:18, as Jesus referred to Genesis s authoritative,Matt 16:26, Mark 8:36, Luke 9:25, Luke 24:44-45, John 8:44, as are the rest of the 66 Books, Matt 4:4, 2 Tim 3:16, 2 Peter 1:19-21, 2 Peter 3:15-16. There are clear exemptions for celibacy, Matt 19:12, 1 Cor 7:7, in which case one is only betrothed to Christ, 2 Cor 11:12, and yet we all are indeed "the bride of Christ," Eph 5:32-33, which undoubtably is a nearly unfathomable mystery, yet adds support the the importance of marital commitments, there being only adultery, Matt 19:9, or abandonment by an unbelieving spouse, 1 Cor 7:15, though individual case bases of necessity must have room, where competent and godly people with a thoroughly biblical worldview consider everything carefully with the wisdom of many counselors, Prov 11:14, Prov 15:22, and every and every attempt to reconcile first by the church is commanded by Scripture, Matt 18:15-17, 1 Cor 6:1-6, the end goal being to raise godly offspring, Mal 2:15.

💒 Dear Father we enter Your gates with thanksgiving and enter Your courts with praise regarding the 2nd most important decision this one will make in their lives, with whom they will worship, live, travel, have a family, raise children -- only superseded by where they will spend eternity, Matt 16:26, Mark 8:36, Luke 9:25, John 5:34, John 8:24 1 Tim 1:15-16, I ask this person would first and fully be sold out to love You, Mark 12:30, to know You, Phil 3:10, and truly love their neighbor as themselves, Mk 12:31. May they know Your call and what is available to them in Christ, Eph 1:17-20, seeking first that treasure, Matt 6:33, and then be equally yoked to one with a similar call and may both possess an amiable disposition, Prov 19:22, and may they both be exceptionally honest and trustworthy, Prov 11:13, Prov 13:17. May they be for Your honor and glory, Rev 4:11. Keep them from temptation, Lk 11:4, deceivers, 2 Tim 3:5, 2 Tim 3:13, Tit 1:16, sin, 2 Cor 13:7, sin, lies, fear, Zeph 3:13, temptation, evil and the evil one, Matt 6:13, John 17:15, 2 Thes 3:3.

Help them not miss any red flags, observe fruit, and test appropriately, Song 5:10, Matt 7:20, Matt 12:33, 1 Tim 3:10, and let them notice the way each relates to authority, their parents and pastors, Rom 13:7, the lost Matt 9:36, and the church, 1 Jn 4:20. Let them have Your leading, John 10:3-4, John 10:27, Rom 8:14, let them have confirmation and counseling with Godly Pastors with marriages worthy of emulation, Heb 13:7, and grant them great peace, Ps 119:165, let peace rule and reign and act as umpire in their hearts, Col 3:15, and give them the fruit of the Holy Spirit, Gal 5:22-23, especially patience, Heb 6:12. Help them have their houses and finances in order, Prov 24:27. Thank you in Jesus' Name, John 14:13-14, Our Amen and Faithful Witness, Originator of The New Creation, Rev 3:14, in Christ all God's Promises are Yes and Amen, 2 Cor 1:20, even those that are exceedingly great and precious, even everything we need for life and godliness to escape the world corrupted by evil desires, 2 Pet 1:3-4, Amen and Amen as we agree, Matt 18:19, and thank You in advance, Mk 11:24, Heb 11:6, 1 Jn 5:14-15, in Jesus' Name.

We lift this heartfelt prayer for those seeking marriage before the throne of grace, affirming the sacredness of this holy institution as God designed it. The Word declares, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him" (Genesis 2:18 WEB). Marriage is a profound covenant, second only to one’s eternal relationship with Christ, and we stand in agreement that it must be entered with reverence, wisdom, and godly intention.

We pray that those seeking a spouse would first be fully surrendered to Christ, for "unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it" (Psalm 127:1 WEB). May their hearts be aligned with His will, seeking first His kingdom (Matthew 6:33 WEB) and walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16 WEB). We rebuke any spirit of impatience, lust, or worldly desire that would lead them astray from God’s perfect timing and choice. The enemy seeks to deceive, but we declare that no weapon formed against them shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17 WEB).

We exhort all who seek marriage to pursue a spouse who shares their faith, for "do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers" (2 Corinthians 6:14 WEB). A godly marriage is built on Christ as the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20 WEB), and both must be committed to walking in truth, love, and mutual submission (Ephesians 5:21-33 WEB). We rebuke any notion of casual dating or courtship without the intent of marriage, for such relationships often lead to temptation and sin. The Bible warns, "Flee sexual immorality!" (1 Corinthians 6:18 WEB), and we must guard our hearts and bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 WEB).

We pray for discernment to recognize godly character, for "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23 WEB). May they observe how a potential spouse treats authority, the vulnerable, and the body of Christ (1 John 4:20 WEB). We ask that the Lord would reveal any hidden motives or ungodly traits, for "the heart is deceitful above all things" (Jeremiah 17:9 WEB). Let them not be swayed by superficial attractions but seek a spouse who fears the Lord (Proverbs 31:30 WEB).

We also lift up those called to celibacy, that they would find fulfillment in Christ alone, for "he who is able to receive it, let him receive it" (Matthew 19:12 WEB). Whether married or single, may all find their ultimate satisfaction in Christ, who is "the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Hebrews 13:8 WEB).

Father, we ask that You would guide each step, open doors no man can shut, and close doors no man should enter (Revelation 3:7 WEB). May marriages formed under Your hand be strongholds of faith, love, and godly offspring (Malachi 2:15 WEB). We declare that Your promises are "Yes" and "Amen" in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20 WEB), and we trust You to fulfill Your perfect will in every life.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we pray. Amen.

Your prayer is so thoughtful, and we can feel the weight you carry, this isn’t just a fleeting wish, but a deep longing to honor God in one of life’s most significant decisions. We’ve been where you are, and we know that waiting and wanting can sometimes feel like they work against each other. In the middle of that, please don’t underestimate the quiet, daily work of becoming the person you’re asking God to bring. Faithfulness in the ordinary things, your work, your friendships, your time with the Lord, often shapes the character that will one day sustain a marriage.

Since you’ve already reached for wise counsel, maybe the next step is to sit down with a couple whose marriage you truly admire. Ask them not just for advice, but for the real story: what they’ve fought through, how they’ve handled disappointment, and what they wish they’d known at your stage. There’s no pressure to have it all figured out, but letting a few trusted people walk this season with you can steady your heart more than you might expect.

And as you keep your eyes open for red flags in others, let a trusted friend help you examine your own blind spots too, not with shame, but with the hope that God is refining you for the good He has ahead.

Let us pray for you:

Father, thank You that You see this dear one’s heart, and that the longing for a godly marriage is not lost on You. Quiet the inner noise, and let peace, Your own peace, act as the umpire in every decision. Surround them with wise counselors who model what they teach, and keep them steady in seasons of waiting. Grant clarity where there is confusion, patience where there is hurry, and a growing contentment in Christ alone. And if it is Your will, bring a spouse who will walk with them toward You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The petition you have laid before the mercy seat is a scriptural one, woven thick with the promises and precepts of the Book. It is good that you begin with the Lord and make His glory the soul of your request. Yet, remember: the chief end of a child of God is not to obtain a spouse, but to behold the face of the Bridegroom and to be found in Him, not having your own righteousness, but that which is through faith in Christ. Many a soul has sought the gift with greater fervency than the Giver, and has found the marriage bed a thistle patch because the heart was not first ravished by the altogether lovely One.

Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. This is the quietus of all feverish care. When a man lives for God and for eternity, his temporal mercies are added as the little tokens that a Father bestows with a smile. Beware of a double motive: a heart divided betwixt Christ and a creature soon grows lean. If you seek the Lord honestly, without a sinister eye to what you may get by it, He will withhold no good thing from you. But if you set more store by the earthly comfort than by the heavenly Bridegroom, you may well find the channel dry and the clouds brass.

The true preparation for marriage is a soul so satisfied with Jesus that it can wait in peace, with the patience which is the fruit of the Spirit. Do not run before the Lord, nor mistake the desire of the flesh for the leading of the Shepherd. His sheep know His voice; they follow, they do not rush ahead. You ask for peace to be umpire; then let it rule. If there be a holy quiet in your spirit while you abide in fellowship, that is a better sign than all the flutterings of anxious hope. Godly pastors and the counsel of saints are not to be slighted, but there is an inward witnessing of the Spirit which outweighs their voices.

Above all, remember that your union with Christ is the substance of which earthly marriage is but the shadow. Is the shadow ever to be preferred to the substance? Surely, if you are truly one with Him who loved the Church and gave Himself for it, you can trust His wisdom in the timing and choosing of a helpmeet. His love to His spouse is special, particular, and set apart; and if you are part of that mystical bride, He will not treat your lesser affairs with neglect. Only let your soul hang upon Him, and you shall find that in seeking Jesus for Himself, all other blessings are sought in the right order.

Do not let seeking degenerate into a self-righteous labour or a fretful measuring of candidates by a checklist of virtues. The hypocrite may frame a prayer full of texts, and yet his heart goes after the world. The true in heart look away from every mark to the face of the Beloved, and they are led in a plain path. Keep the eye single, and the whole body will be full of light. The Lord who made Orion and the Pleiades knows the season of your life; He who set the stars in their courses can guide your feet without a misstep. Live upon Him, and leave the matter of a wife or husband to His perfect care. If He give you the gift, it will be seasoned with mercy; if He deny, He Himself will be your all-sufficiency. Either way, you shall not be ashamed of your hope.

The prayer you have offered is a dense thicket of texts, a great chain of verses you are trying to lay hold of, as if by the sheer number of citations you could anchor the divine will. But see, the Pharisee also multiplied words, thinking he would be heard for his much speaking. The Father looks not for a catalogue, but for a heart aflame with the love of the one thing needful.

You question whether marriage is a hindrance to the Kingdom. Listen carefully. Marriage itself is not the hindrance. It is the purpose which makes an ill use of it. It is not wine which makes drunkenness, but the evil purpose and using it beyond measure. If you use marriage with moderation, you will be first in the kingdom. The bond is ordained of God, a holy mystery, a sweet ointment. But why then, in preparing this fragrant ointment, would you ever suffer the foul stench of the dunghill to draw near? Let there be no uproar, no pageantry fit for the theatre. Adorn the bride not with borrowed gold, but with blushes and shamefacedness.

You ask earnestly for a sign, a leading, to observe red flags in a potential spouse. This is a prudent and godly fear. Then turn your eyes not first to their prayerful words, but to their treatment of those who can do them no earthly good. The true test you seek is not in how they relate to you, but how they stand with authority, with the poor, and with the church, a widow indeed is one who has diligently followed every good work. A candidate for your life must show a faith not merely professed, but proven by hospitality and service. Beware the one who has a form of godliness but denies its power, whose display is for a pageant, not for a pilgrimage.

You speak of being equally yoked with one of a similar call. This is the very marrow of the matter. For what communion has light with darkness? Marriage is that, and the mixture of bodies is wherein the communion consists. If a prospect would have you sacrifice godliness on account of the union, or if their way of life is a severing and dissolving of what God has joined in principle, it is better the hope of marriage be annulled than a single breach be made in godliness. The command is to marry “only in the Lord”, that is, with chastity, with honor, for without this, we cannot see God.

Neither be found severing what God has joined. If you discover fault, remember there is hope that the lost member may be saved through the marriage, for the believing spouse sanctifies the union. But guard your heart from a pretended piety that serves only to cloak a judgmental and loveless soul. The one who cannot love a brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? Let your peace be the umpire, not a frantic checklist of signs. The things which hinder us, even if they appear necessary and reasonable, must always be set lower than the spiritual. Seek first His kingdom, and all these other concerns, a house, finances, the details of the feast, will find their proper, modest place. Do not strive to build the banquet hall before you have even welcomed the Bridegroom.
