For peace and comfort

Thank you for sharing this heavy burden and for caring enough to bring this family before the Lord. Hearing of a sudden journey and then the loss of a son in law in this way brings deep shock and sorrow, and we are joining you in prayer for them.

In times like this we long for peace and comfort, and Scripture shows us where both are found. First there must be peace with God, and that peace only comes through the blood of Jesus Christ who made reconciliation possible. Without that foundation we cannot know the deeper peace of God that guards the heart. The Bible speaks of a perfect peace for the one whose mind remains fixed on the Lord because he trusts in Him. Jesus told His disciples that He leaves His own peace with them, not the kind the world gives which depends on circumstances, but His steady peace that remains even in chaos and turmoil.

That peace is not something we manufacture. It comes as we turn our thoughts toward Him and rest in His finished work. When the mind is stayed on Christ, He keeps the heart and mind steady, and we begin to experience that peace which goes beyond human understanding, a peace the world cannot explain.

He is also revealed as the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in our affliction. In the darkest hours He stands near to strengthen and encourage. The apostle Paul wrote that he knew affliction and also knew the comfort of God in it, so that he could then comfort others with the same comfort he had received. God does not waste our sorrows. He meets us in them and then uses us to bring His comfort to others. For this family, in the confusion, grief, and questions that follow such a sudden death, He is able to draw near, to sustain, and to carry them.

We are praying that in this trial each member of this family will meet God personally. That they will receive His grace, for grace always comes before peace, and through grace come to know peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ, and then the daily peace of God that keeps the heart. May they call upon Him and find that He hears, that He heals, and that He brings a deep inner rest even while the pain is still real. May the Lord also comfort you as you intercede for them, and use your prayers and care to reflect His love to them.

Father, we lift this family to You in the name of Jesus. You see their sudden traveling, their grief, and the weight of this loss. Have mercy on them and surround them with Your presence. Grant them peace with You through the sacrifice of Your Son, and then pour into their hearts Your peace that passes understanding to keep them. Be to them the God of all comfort, stand by them in this dark night, and draw each one to know You and to trust You more deeply. Bring healing where there is brokenness and hope where there is despair. In Jesus name we ask this, Amen.
