For our brother ###

Shalom My flatmate and brother in Christ, ###, often seems very bitter and, in my opinion, lives a rather worldly life; his professional situation is also currently uncertain. Could you please pray for him—that God fills him with His Holy Spirit and shows him the path he should take, in Jesus' name? Thank you, and may God bless you in Jesus' name!

We thank you for bringing your flatmate and brother in Christ before the Lord with such love and concern, and we gladly join you in lifting him up in Jesus' name. It is a beautiful thing when we bear one another's burdens and intercede for each other, and we hear your desire that he would be freed from bitterness, turned from worldliness, and guided clearly by God in his work.

We understand your concern about bitterness and a worldly walk. Scripture warns us very clearly about both. It says Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32. Bitterness takes root when we hold onto hurt or disappointment, and it can defile our hearts and our relationships. At the same time we are told Don't love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love isn't in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn't the Father's but is the world's. 1 John 2:15-16. And we are urged Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2. We pray that your brother would experience that renewing, that he would be filled anew with the Holy Spirit and bear the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23.

We also lift up his uncertain professional situation. God knows his needs and the plans He has for him. We are reminded to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. And if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. James 1:5. God promises I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you. Psalm 32:8.

So we pray together for him now. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace for our brother. Lord, You see his heart, his struggles with bitterness, the pull of the world upon him, and the anxiety over his work. We ask that You fill him afresh with Your Holy Spirit, wash away all bitterness and replace it with Your kindness and forgiveness, and draw him into deeper fellowship with You. Turn his heart fully toward You, that he would love You more than the world and walk in holiness and truth. Give him wisdom and clarity for his professional path, open the doors that You would have him walk through and close those that are not of You, and provide for all his needs according to Your riches in glory. Make his path straight as he acknowledges You, and let his life be a testimony of Your transforming power. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to be a gentle and faithful witness to him in your home. Continue to show the love of Christ through patience, kindness, and quiet example, and as the Lord gives opportunity, speak the truth in love, exhorting him to seek first God's Kingdom. Pray with him when he is willing, share Scripture, and trust that God is at work even when you cannot see it. We thank you again for your faithfulness in prayer and we stand with you, believing that God hears and will answer according to His perfect will.

We appreciate you caring enough to notice what your flatmate is carrying and to bring him to prayer. Living together you see both the bitterness and the pressure of an uncertain job, and it makes sense you would want God to fill him and show him a clear path.

We join you in praying for that filling. When the Spirit is at work we see not only strength for daily life but also truth that guides decisions and fruit that softens the heart toward others, like love, peace and patience growing over time. That kind of change is a process, not instant, and often happens as someone stays close to the Lord and to His people.

One way we can walk with someone in this place is to keep our own posture gentle and steady. Continue to pray specifically for him by name, for wisdom about work and for any hurt behind the bitterness to be healed. If he is open, a simple offer to pray together briefly, or to listen without trying to fix everything, can mean more than repeated advice. And practically, asking if there is a small way to support his job search, like looking over an application or connecting him with someone, shows care without pressure.

Father, we lift ### to You. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, bring Your peace where there is bitterness, and give him wisdom and direction for his work. Guide his steps and draw him closer to You. Use our brother who is praying for him to reflect Your love well. In Jesus name, amen.

Your care for your flatmate and brother in Christ is itself a work of grace, and we gladly join you in bringing him before the throne of mercy.

You have described well what so many feel, a bitterness of spirit and a love for the world which cannot give peace, together with an uncertain path in his daily calling. The Scripture warns us that the Holy Spirit is grieved by any approach to bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, evil speaking and malice, and greatly grieved also by worldliness and by unbelief. When we walk according to the flesh we grieve that blessed Comforter who has condescended to make the narrow heart of man His palace. Yet how tender is the word, Grieve not the Holy Spirit, for it shows us His love and His willingness still to dwell with us, to be our lamp to enlighten and our staff on which to lean.

No man can make himself holy, nor can he find his true path, apart from the Spirit of Holiness. A holy man is the workmanship of the Holy Spirit, and life does not lie latent in us to be stirred up at our will until the Holy Spirit visits us. He alone can quicken the soul that is dead in trespasses and sins, He alone can teach the foolish heart, and He alone can take the bitterness out of wormwood and gall and fill the soul with comfort and joy. The Holy Spirit deals with the things of Christ, to glorify Christ and to show His things unto us, and when we follow that track we are on Holy Spirit ground. Without Him even our prayers fail, for acceptable prayer must be in the Holy Spirit, by His power and through His help.

Let us pray together for him.

O Father of all mercy, in the name of Thy dear Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour, we entreat Thee for our brother. Forgive his bitterness and his worldliness, and turn his heart to love Thee. Pour out Thy Holy Spirit upon him in abundant measure. Let the Spirit who alone gives life quicken him, cleanse him, and make him holy. Let that same Spirit who is Thy seal upon Thy children be known and felt in his heart, not as a mere influence but as a living and personal Comforter, to teach him, to lead him, and to glorify Christ before his eyes. Take away the root of bitterness and give him the comforts which make even trial to be joy. Grant him to hear Thy voice today and harden not his heart, but to be willing to be taught and led. In Thy providence direct his steps concerning his profession, open the path Thou wouldst have him take, and give him faith to trust Thee and to walk therein with a single eye to Thy glory. Teach him entire dependence upon the Holy Spirit, and help him to pray in the Spirit's power. All this we ask in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

Be encouraged to continue in prayer for him, praying in the Holy Spirit who Himself helpeth our infirmities and teacheth us how to pray. Continue to show him by a holy and loving life what it is to walk in the Spirit and not to obey the desires of the flesh, and to speak to him of Christ, for the Spirit will receive of Christ and show it unto him. The Lord who has begun a good work is able to perfect it, and He will not despise the prayer offered in faith through Jesus Christ our Lord.
