Beloved of All
Your desire for self control, discipline, focus and consistency in prayer, in reading Scripture and in training is itself evidence of God working in you, and I thank Him for it. To want a life that is ordered and faithful is to want a life that glorifies Him.
Scripture teaches that self control is not merely a matter of willpower, but a fruit of a life lived for God. When Jesus taught us to pray, hallowed be Your name, He was teaching us to ask that our own lives would so reflect Him that others would see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. A disciplined life, pure and irreproachable, becomes a way of praising God before the world. That is the highest motive for self control, not only to improve ourselves but to make the name of Christ honored through us.
I encourage you not to pursue this discipline as a heavy burden or only for the sake of a reward. Virtue that is followed as if we were hirelings, or as something burdensome, will not last. Pursue it with a ready mind and with joy, out of love for Christ Himself. God in His mercy does promise reward, but we grow most when we learn to love goodness itself because we love Him. Remember also that we are always in need of prayer, both our own watchfulness and the prayers of others. Do not think you must do this alone by sheer resolve. Stay awake and alert yourself, and also gladly receive the prayers of fellow believers, for we all need that help even as we strive.
For consistency, seek small faithfulness rather than great bursts. Set a fixed and realistic time each day to pray and to read the Bible, even if it is brief at first, and keep it as a holy appointment. Come with thanksgiving for all things, great and small, which keeps the heart from both pride and despair and teaches true restraint. In your training, treat the body as a servant to be cared for with temperance, not indulged and not despised. When you fail on a day, do not give up, but mourn the fault honestly, repent, and begin again. God honors steady, humble persistence more than perfection in a moment.
I pray for you that the Lord will grant you a spirit of discipline and a sound mind, that He will strengthen you to be watchful in prayer, to hunger for His Word as daily bread, and to steward your body with consistency. May He keep you from discouragement, fill you with joy in obedience, and make your life a clear light that points others to glorify Him. May He who began this good desire in you bring it to completion as you walk faithfully with Christ day by day.
