We join with you in this desire for self control, discipline, focus and consistency, for this is a godly longing and it honors the Lord when we seek to be faithful in the small things each day.

The Word shows us that self control is not merely willpower but fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in us as we walk with Him. Galatians 5:22-23 reminds us that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. And 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. Yet we are also called to train ourselves, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:27, I beat my body and bring it into submission, lest by any means, after I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected. Without discipline we become like a city without walls, as Proverbs 25:28 says, Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint.

We encourage you to see consistency in prayer and in reading the Bible not as a burden but as daily bread and as training for godliness. Joshua 1:8 says This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it, for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success. Psalm 1:2 describes the blessed man whose delight is in Yahweh’s law, on his law he meditates day and night. For prayer, we are called to pray without ceasing in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, and to follow the example of Daniel who prayed faithfully three times a day. For bodily training, Scripture says bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things in 1 Timothy 4:8, so we keep the body disciplined for the glory of God and do all things as unto the Lord as Colossians 3:23 teaches, Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men. Practically we urge you to set a fixed time and place each morning for the Word and prayer, to begin with a manageable plan, to keep a simple journal, to remove distractions, and to ask the Lord for strength when the flesh is weak, remembering that His grace teaches us to live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world according to Titus 2:12.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we gently point this out because there is no other way to the Father except through Him. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is only by faith in Jesus, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we have access to God and power to overcome the flesh. If you have not yet placed your full trust in Him, we urge you to confess Him as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this dear one who longs for focus and discipline. Forgive us for the times we have been double minded and slothful, and create in us a clean heart that delights in Your Word. Pour out Your Spirit upon our brother or sister and produce in them the fruit of self control, help them to be steadfast in prayer and faithful to meditate on Scripture daily, and to be diligent in training their body as Your temple. Teach them to redeem the time, to resist distraction, and to walk in the power and love and discipline You have given. Strengthen them when they feel weak and remind them that Your strength is made perfect in weakness. We ask that You establish their steps and keep them consistent day by day for Your glory. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We hear the honest desire in your request for more self-control, focus and consistency in prayer, Bible reading and daily training. It is a good desire, and it is also normal to find the day-to-day steadiness hard to keep.

Something that has helped many of us is to think less about trying harder and more about training steadily. No one runs a long distance by sheer effort on the first day. It comes from small, regular practice over time that slowly shapes both habits and heart. Seeing yourself as a work in progress can take some of the pressure off and keep you from quitting when a day does not go as planned.

If it would help, consider choosing one tiny, repeatable rhythm for this next week instead of overhauling everything at once. Pick a set time and place and keep it brief enough to be doable every day, for example fifteen minutes in the same chair for Bible reading and prayer, then move directly into your training while you are already up and focused. A simple check mark is enough to track it, and if you miss a day just begin again the next morning without carrying shame.

We are with you in this and we are grateful you reached out. We are praying for steadiness and peace as you keep showing up.

Father, we bring our friend before You and ask for Your help to grow in discipline and focus. Give clarity for each day, strength to return after setbacks, and joy in meeting with You. Shape these habits in a way that honors You and brings lasting good. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your desire for self control, discipline and steadiness in prayer and in the Word is itself a hopeful sign, for such a prayer as Quicken me in Your way can only come from one in whom the quickening Spirit already dwells. The flesh is sluggish and wandering, and we need daily quickening in private prayer, in public prayer, in family devotion, and in reading the Scriptures.

You have enlisted under a great Captain, the Lord Jesus Christ, and being soldiers we come under discipline. Every soldier must count the cost, for the discipline of Christ's army is strict and it is meant to be so. It is not a harsh bondage but a blessed discipline, for whom the Lord loves He chastens and trains. Do not despise it, but watch the signs of His hand guiding you, and say to self love and self will, down, down, proud spirit, that Christ may be your pattern and you may bear more of His gracious image.

In this matter take heed that you do not fall into self conceit, which tears the wheels from the chariot of prayer so that it drags heavily. True strength for discipline does not come from resolving in your own power, but from humble dependence upon God. Imitate Jacob, who after he had done what wisdom required, betook himself to prayer in humility of spirit and pleaded with God with holy arguments, spreading his case before Him and pressing His promises. So you also may pray, Remember the Word unto Your servant, and plead the promises which God has given concerning steadfastness, purity and perseverance.

Therefore never give up the Bible, not a leaf of it. Know it thoroughly and believe what it reveals. And beware of reading it only for others or for duty. Get your own text, your own morsel of marrow and fatness out of Scripture each day, and let private prayer be kept up with a view to your own edification and growth in grace. Stand sentry at prayer and let no sloth or laughter move you from it. Trials give new life to prayer, but so does daily, watchful discipline.

For the training of the body, receive it as stewardship of the temple God has entrusted to you, yet keep it in its place, that the body may serve the soul and not rule it.

We will pray for you, that the Lord who is the God of all grace would quicken you in His way, grant you a humble and watchful spirit, establish you in the habit of prayer and the Word, and make you steadfast and fruitful in every good work, to the praise of His name.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
