We see your heart’s desire to align prayer with Scripture, lifting up the Lord’s Prayer as a model for seeking God’s will. What a beautiful reminder that our first priority in prayer is to honor the Father’s name, welcome His kingdom, and surrender to His will, just as it is done in heaven. Only after we have set our hearts on His glory do we bring our needs before Him, trusting that He knows what we require even before we ask (Matthew 6:8).

You rightly point to 1 John 5:18, which declares that those born of God do not continue in sin, for God’s seed remains in them, and they cannot keep on sinning because they have been born of God. This truth reminds us that prayer is not just about asking for provision, it is about walking in holiness and dependence on Christ. When we seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, all these things, our daily needs, will be added to us (Matthew 6:33). This is not a promise of material excess, but of divine sufficiency for those who live for Him.

We thank You for teaching us how to pray, not with empty phrases, but with hearts surrendered to Your will. Lord, may Your name be honored in our lives, Your kingdom advanced through us, and Your will be done in every circumstance we face. Provide for our needs today, not according to our wants, but according to Your wisdom and grace. Forgive us our sins, as we extend forgiveness to those who have wronged us. Guard our hearts and minds from temptation, and deliver us from the evil one. We declare that Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

When we stand in that place, our own daily needs, our struggles, and even our failures can be brought into the light of a God who already knows and cares. What you prayed, straight from Matthew 6, is a lifeline we come back to again and again. We have found that simply lingering over the first half, the honor of His name, the longing for His kingdom, the surrender to His will, often reshapes the way we see the second half. The “daily bread” we need might still be scarce in one sense, but we begin to notice His provision all around us, often in small, quiet forms. Forgiveness that once felt impossible becomes something we can extend because we have first received it ourselves. And in moments of temptation or the shadow of evil, there is a steadiness that comes from knowing we belong to a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

The prayer set before us is none other than the pattern Christ Himself gave, and in it we see the true order of our petitions, first the glory of the Father, then our daily bread. This is wisdom, for when the soul is bent upon the honour of God’s name and the coming of His kingdom, the lesser needs are already met in that greater seeking. Yet I perceive a heart that trembles, a conscience that knows its debts, and a spirit that yearns for the deliverance only Heaven can give.

It is divine forgiveness that you need, and it is divine forgiveness that is proclaimed. There is forgiveness! Mark that word, it is not a hope, not a perchance, but a deed already accomplished in the blood of the Lamb. I, even I, am He that blotteth out your transgressions for Mine own sake. The Lord Himself repeats it, as if astonished that His grace should swallow up such guilt, yet He delights to do it. Your sins may stalk before you like grim spectres, but listen: “There is forgiveness with Thee, that Thou mayest be feared.” No limit is drawn, no date expired. Today, this very hour, for the chief of sinners, there is forgiveness, full, free, and eternal.

But you must have it from God, through Jesus Christ. You cannot pay a farthing of the debt; you must come with empty hands and let the ransom stand instead of you. And when you have it, the same grace that forgives your trespasses will give you daily bread and deliver you from the Evil One. The Christian’s life is one continuous deliverance, from the pit, from the archers of doubt, from the whispering lie that tells you God’s ear is shut. He that brought Israel out with silver and gold makes your deliverance real and your provision sure. Never imagine that the broken bread of His Table has lost its freshness, for it is still the feast of pardon and the seal of peace.

If men revile you, if the enemy shoots arrows of despair, remember the cloud of witnesses. Jacob, David, and all the saints who tasted of sharp trials yet found God faithful. Their testimony is this: He heard their cry, He forgave their sin, and He led them by a way they knew not. And so He will for you. The very bodily pains, the heartaches you now endure, are often the dark envelope of a mercy that will make you wealthier in grace and richer in experience. Trust Him. Put your Father’s glory first, and all else is added. The forgiveness is with Him, run not away, but towards the throne where the blood speaks better things. There is forgiveness. There is deliverance. There is bread for your hunger and strength for your warfare. Go in peace, for the kingdom, the power, and the glory are His, and you are His child.

When you pray for daily bread, you ask wisely, for the Lord Himself taught us to seek only what is necessary for the day, not riches or delicacies. He added “daily” and “this day” to free your soul from anxiety about the morrow. The One who gives seed to the sower and bread for food will supply your need, not to excess but such that having a sufficiency you may abound in every good work.

But observe how the prayer is framed entirely in the plural: “Our Father,” “give us,” “forgive us,” “lead us not.” This commands you to cast out every vestige of anger against your neighbor. You cannot ask for your own bread without caring for the hungry, nor beg forgiveness while withholding it from others. For if we all partake of the one bread, which is Christ’s body, we become one body. How then can we show discord when we are nourished by the same loaf? Let your love be as visible as your shared Eucharist.

You mention forgiveness. I remind you that blessedness belongs to those whose sins are covered by grace, not by debt. But this blessing lifts all shame and brings great glory only if you in turn forgive your debtors from the heart. Do not bring your offering while your brother has something against you.

As for temptation, be of good courage. No trial has overtaken you that is beyond human strength; God is faithful and with the temptation will make a way of escape. You have not yet resisted to the point of blood. Whether tribulation, distress, or peril comes, remember the blessed Paul’s daring: he counted them all as nothing compared to the love of God in Christ. Such confidence is yours too if you set your heart on the kingdom and His righteousness, trusting that all these things, your daily bread, your deliverance from evil, will be added.

Therefore, pray as you have written, but also live it. Let your request for bread be joined to generosity, your plea for pardon be matched by mercy, and your longing for deliverance be held in the common hope of the whole church. Then His name will indeed be honored in you, and His will done on earth as in heaven.

You are beginning in exactly the right place, not with a list of anxious wants, but with a heart set on the honor of your Father’s name and the coming of His kingdom. That is the very order Jesus gave us, and it changes everything about how we then ask for daily bread, forgiveness, and deliverance. When His glory comes first, our needs are held in the right hands.

The bread we ask for is more than flour and water. It represents all that sustains life, and our Father knows we have real physical hungers. He feeds the birds and clothes the grass. He is not reluctant to provide for His children. Yet Jesus also taught that there is a deeper bread: He Himself is the living bread that came down from heaven. Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness and they died, but whoever feeds on Christ by faith will live forever. So as you pray “give us our daily bread,” you are asking the Father to sustain both body and soul, to keep you physically and to keep you feasting on Jesus, the true bread.

Forgiveness is our greatest spiritual necessity, because if our sins remain, we stand under judgment. But the same prayer that teaches us to ask for forgiveness teaches us to release others from their debts against us. The measure we hold out becomes the measure we receive. That does not mean we earn forgiveness by forgiving, it means that a heart that has truly tasted God’s mercy will not clutch bitterness. It will wipe its hands, so to speak, and let the grudges fall away. Guilt left unconfessed and unforgiveness left unresolved breed a sickness of soul that can even create a hidden desire for punishment. But the Father stands ready to cleanse, and He calls you to walk in that same cleansing grace toward others.

Then comes that sober plea: “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” This does not suggest that God ever solicits anyone to sin. He cannot be tempted with evil, and He tempts no one. When an enticement to evil comes, a shortcut off His path that promises immediate fulfillment, that is not His doing. It is the voice of the enemy, the same serpent who whispered that God was holding back something good. The prayer is a cry of dependence: “Lord, I know my own frail heart. Keep me from circumstances and desires that would pander to my flesh and turn me away from You.” You are asking Him to be your guard and your escape. And He is faithful. He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear, but will make a way out so you can endure it, if you will take it.

So hold fast to that pattern. Your Father’s glory, your daily sustenance, your forgiveness, your protection, all bound up in one prayer that carries you from the throne of heaven down to the crumbs under the table, where even the little dogs eat the bread that falls from the master’s hand. And remember the cross, where the true Bread was broken for the life of the world. There is no need, no sin, no assault of the evil one that was not answered there. The kingdom and the power and the glory are His forever. Amen, indeed, in Jesus’ name.
