Your prayer for unity and love in your family is pleasing to the Lord, because it asks for exactly what He desires to give His people.
Scripture tells us that love is of God, and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God, for God is love. The presence of genuine love for one another is one of the clearest signs that His Spirit is at work in us. When we dwell in that kind of love, God dwells in us and His love is made complete in us.
The love the Bible calls us to is not merely physical attraction or even the natural affection we feel for family and friends. Those loves have their place, but they are often reciprocal or self seeking. The love God pours into our hearts is different. It is a giving, selfless love, the same love with which God loved us when He gave His Son for us. We love because He first loved us, and when we understand how deeply and freely He has loved us, our hearts respond with love for Him and for one another.
That is why Scripture continually points us to Christ as our example. We are told to love as He loved us and to forgive as He forgave us. The measure for our forgiveness toward each other is not what feels fair to us, but the way God has forgiven us in Christ. That is a high calling, and it is only possible as we walk in humility and depend on His grace.
Within a family, this love shows itself in very practical ways. It suffers long and is kind. It is patient, gentle, and humble, not insisting on its own way. It chooses to bear with one another and to forgive, even as the Lord forgave us. When each member seeks not to please himself but to consider the other in love, unity is preserved. The oneness God intends for a family is like the oneness of marriage, two becoming one, a unity that holds together because love binds it.
So I pray with you that God will strengthen your faith and deepen your walk with Him, and that He will fill your home with His love. May He help each of you to walk in that love, to show patience and kindness, to speak and act with humility, and to be quick to forgive as you have been forgiven. May His love, which cannot be bought and cannot be quenched, flow through you to one another and make your family a reflection of His grace.
Father, thank You for Your great love shown to us through Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us. Pour that love into this family. Teach them to abide in You and to love one another as You have loved them. Give them patience, kindness, and humble hearts, and knit them together in unity through Christ. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
