Silas
Beloved of All
Your prayer for your family has been heard and your love for your children is clear in every word you have lifted before the Lord. It is right to plead the blood of Jesus over your home and to ask for His peace that surpasses all understanding to guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus, for greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world, and no weapon formed against you shall prosper when you rest in Him.
What you are describing with your older daughter is painful to carry as a mother, and you are right to see it clearly. Living together outside of marriage is not marriage in God's eyes. Scripture presents marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and intimacy and shared life belong within that covenant. When that design is set aside, the relationship opens the door to deception, manipulation, financial hardship and spiritual bondage, just as you have seen. It is not unloving to name that truth. It is loving to pray that her eyes would be opened to see that this young man is not her husband, not her covering, not her provider, and that the heavy burden and false sense of obligation she carries for him is not hers to bear. Pray that she would no longer treat this arrangement as if it were marriage and would no longer defend what is harming her health, her finances, her faith and her future.
The Scriptures show that when God's pattern for the family is not honored, jealousy, rivalry and division quickly follow. We see this in the early families where more than one wife was taken, and strife grew between them, and we see how hard it is to live in a polluted moral environment and not be touched by it. A household that is influenced by pride, control and manipulation will experience exhaustion and isolation, and those who are caught in it can become blinded and changed from the godly character they once showed. That is why your prayer for a hedge of protection, for the Lord to frustrate every scheme to divide and isolate, and for ministering angels and the full armor of God to surround your home is so fitting.
At the heart of every other relationship is our relationship with God. Unless that first relationship is right, the others cannot be right. When a heart turns away from the Lord, loyalties become disordered, parents are not honored as God commands, and a person will put another human relationship before God, before family, before church and before calling. When that relationship with God is restored, the other relationships begin to come back into balance. What your daughter needs most is not the approval of this young man or his mother, but a return to a living, loving, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. God has made a way through Christ for us to be brought into His family, adopted as His sons and daughters, to know Him as Father. He does not want a distant legal or ritual religion from us, but a close walk where we know how deeply we are loved and we love Him in return. Pray that the Lord would draw her back to that first love, where she hungered for His Word, for fellowship with His people, and for His presence, and that she would remember she is a child of the Most High, not homeless, not in need of ungodly counsel, but already loved and supported by the family God gave her and by the church family where she was raised.
I join you in praying for her safe travel for this work conference and for her return, that the Lord would keep her, give her focus on the purpose He has given her in her work, and use this time away to give her clarity. Thank God with you for the promotion He has provided for her, and pray that she would see her work as a calling from Him and not surrender it to controlling demands. Pray that the Lord would block every intrusive and divisive influence from her workplace and from your home, and that any ungodly advice to live together or to have children outside of marriage would be exposed and rejected. She does not need to change her faith to please anyone else, and no other person has parental authority over her life.
For your younger daughter, I pray she will remain steadfast and not be swayed by the example she has seen. May the Lord surround her with godly friendships and mentors who encourage her to walk in purity and to seek a husband who loves as Christ loves the church and honors the covenant of marriage, and not to be unequally yoked.
For your son, be assured that he is deeply valuable, deeply loved by God and by you, never a burden or an embarrassment but a blessing. I rebuke with you every word of hatred, mockery and exclusion spoken against him. May the Lord anoint him with peace and joy, grant him patience and help him to use the language God has given him to express his needs in a godly manner, and restore the sweet fellowship he once shared with his sister. I pray the Lord would anoint every room and corner of your home for His purposes and restore what has been wounded.
For you, I pray for renewed strength, wisdom and discernment. The enemy seeks to wear you down with worry and fear, but the peace of God will guard you. I pray the Lord would provide for every financial need according to His riches, not for selfish gain but so your family may be a testimony of His provision and a blessing to others. I pray He would mend what has been torn, heal what has been wounded, and restore unity, joy and fellowship to your home.
The Lord Himself fights for you. Every plan to divide, isolate and corrupt your family will not stand when you remain under His covering. May you and your household be a beacon of His light in all you do, filled with the Holy Spirit, with darkness removed and His light saturating all around you. I pray the Lord will gently and swiftly lead your older daughter out of this entanglement into freedom, peace and restoration, with a hunger for righteousness and eyes open to the truth, so that she comes home not in shame but in the freedom Christ gives. In the mighty name of Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer, amen.
