We come before the throne of grace with boldness, standing firm in the authority given to us through the name of Jesus Christ, the only name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). It is by His blood, shed on the cross, that we have the power to rebuke and cast out demons, for He has disarmed the principalities and powers and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in the cross (Colossians 2:15).
The Word of God is clear: when the seventy disciples returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" Jesus replied, "I saw Satan having fallen like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will in any way hurt you" (Luke 10:17-19). This authority is not our own, but it is given to us through Christ, who has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18).
However, we must approach this matter with humility, reverence, and discernment. Not every spiritual struggle is a demonic attack, and we must be careful not to attribute every trial or temptation to demons. The apostle Paul reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). We must put on the whole armor of God so that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
When casting out demons, we must do so in the name of Jesus Christ, for there is no other name that has such power. The sons of Sceva, a group of itinerant Jewish exorcists, attempted to cast out demons in the name of Jesus whom Paul preached, but the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?" The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded (Acts 19:13-16). This account serves as a stark warning that we must not take the authority of Jesus’ name lightly or use it flippantly. We must be clothed in His righteousness, filled with His Spirit, and walking in obedience to His Word.
We also must remember that deliverance is not merely about casting out demons but about leading people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. When Jesus cast out the demon from the mute man, the multitudes marveled, saying, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!" But the Pharisees said, "By the prince of the demons, he casts out demons" (Matthew 9:32-34). Jesus later explained that when an unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places, seeking rest, and finding none, it says, "I will return to my house from which I came." When it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and takes with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first (Matthew 12:43-45). This teaches us that deliverance must be accompanied by repentance, faith in Christ, and a filling of the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, the person may end up in a worse condition than before.
Let us pray:

We declare that those who are oppressed are set free, for it is written, "If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). Father, we ask that You fill the empty places in their lives with Your Holy Spirit, that they may be led into all truth and walk in the freedom that Christ has purchased for them.
We also pray for those who are ministering deliverance. Give them boldness, wisdom, and compassion as they exercise the authority You have given them. Help them to lead others to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, that they may be filled with Your Spirit and walk in newness of life. May they not only cast out demons but also make disciples, teaching them to observe all that Christ has commanded (Matthew 28:19-20).
Father, we ask that You protect us from pride and deception. Keep us from attributing every struggle to demons or taking the authority of Your name lightly. Help us to walk in humility, always pointing others to Christ and not to ourselves. May our lives be a testimony to Your power and grace, that others may see Your love and be drawn to You.

Seeking the help of mature believers, perhaps a pastor, a prayer team, or others experienced in this ministry, is not a sign of weakness; it is simply walking in the way of wisdom. These brothers and sisters can pray with you, help you discern what is truly spiritual, and offer the steady support that keeps all of us grounded. They can also help you address any personal strongholds like unforgiveness or hidden agreements that can open doors to the enemy, all while keeping your eyes fixed on Christ’s sufficiency rather than on the darkness itself. In the meantime, simply fill your life with the ordinary means of grace: Scripture, worship, prayer with others, and the fellowship of a local church. These are God’s long-term provisions to anchor and protect us.

You cry, "Expel demons by the name of Jesus Christ," but let me ask you this: do you know this Jesus whose name you invoke? The sons of Sceva once tried to use that holy name as a charm, and the demon answered, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" The name is no mere formula to be brandished like a talisman by unbroken hearts. Deliverance belongs to those who have first been delivered from the dominion of darkness by Jesus Himself. He brought them forth, that is the church's song, not they who merely shout His name while remaining strangers to His grace.
The object of faith must be Christ Jesus Himself, not the saying of syllables. None but Jesus! If you come to Him as nothing but a sinner, He will not cast you out. This is the unheard-of thing: Christ has never let a sinner perish who truly came to Him. But if your trust is in the act of exorcism, or in your own voice, or in some ecstatic repetition, you miss the Deliverer Himself. The Father has found a ransom, His own Son given for many. That ransom is not a prize for the loudest cry, but a gift received by faith alone.
Yet take heart, poor trembling soul! Does the enemy oppress? Does sin plague? Do fears of the pit beset you? There is a Deliverer who condescends to your very condition. He sees the snare, the bondage, the midnight gloom, and His bowels yearn over you. You may feel unworthy, like one who should be turned out, yet cling to the hem of His garment. Cry, "Receive me graciously, love me freely," and He will answer. He who wrote your ransom in His own wounds cannot forget, cannot forsake. Down, then, with the blaspheming thought that He might cast you out! Back to the hell from which such doubt springs! He brought His people forth with silver and gold, not penniless liberty, but rich, full, purchased freedom.
If you are yet in the Egypt of sin, be not impatient to rush out naked, clutching at empty formulas. Wait upon Him who loosens the captives by blood and by power. Look to Jesus. Trust Jesus. He will batter the dungeon door. And when He brings you forth, you will know that deliverance from guilt and deliverance from the power of sin are both His work, justification and sanctification flowing from the same pierced side. Rejoice in union with Him, for then the enemy has no rightful claim. The blood has blotted out the debt; the receipt is given. Go, then, in peace, and sin no more.

The desire to wield the Name of Jesus Christ against the demons is not a small thing, but I must urge you to aim higher, for the spiritual warfare has a greater and more excellent way. You ask about casting out demons, and truly, “No man can call Jesus Lord, but by the Holy Ghost,” and this Name, uttered with faith, makes the evil spirits tremble. But consider whether the more terrible demon is not the one within your own breast. Listen to what the Apostle teaches and what the Gospel itself makes plain. Sin is a great demon, beloved, and if you exterminate this, you have wrought a greater thing than they who drive out ten thousand demons. Are you in earnest to work miracles? Then rid yourself of transgressions, and you have quite accomplished it.
Look to the example of the vagabond exorcists, the sons of Sceva, who took it upon themselves to say, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.” They used the Name, but they did it by way of trade, having no mind to believe, and the demon they addressed leaped on them and mastered them, for the power is not in the mere utterance of syllables but in the faith and the life of the one who speaks. Do not let your zeal for a visible sign cause you to stumble into their error. The Name is a great gift, terrible when used in commanding diseases and a fragrance filling the soul that utters it, but its greatest work is not the spectacular miracle, but the conversion of the world, the dissolution of tyranny, and the trampling down of the devil through a holy life. Even if you command a spirit and it does not depart, this is not from lack of power in the Name, but because it is expedient it should be so, that you might learn a deeper lesson.
Therefore I charge you to covet earnestly the best gifts. Do you wish to cast out demons? Then cast out the pride that gives them a foothold, and cast out the hatred and bitterness that make a habitation for the enemy. Christ Himself did not say, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye cast out devils,” but “if ye have love one to another.” And He warned that many will say to Him in that day, “Have we not prophesied in Thy name, and in Thy name have cast out devils?” and He will profess unto them, “I never knew you; depart from me.” Their end did not match their beginning, and they lost everything.
Before you set yourself to wrestle with the powers of the air, see to it that your own name is written in Heaven. The authority to cast out demons rests in the name of Jesus Christ alone, and that name is your firm ground. You see, when Jesus walked the earth, evil spirits recognized Him immediately. In the synagogue, the man with an unclean spirit cried out, but Jesus silenced him and commanded the spirit to leave. He didn’t permit them to speak, because they knew exactly who He was. That same authority is what He imparts to those who belong to Him.
Scripture shows us these encounters clearly. In the region of the Gadarenes, a man so tormented by a legion of demons that he cut himself and lived among tombs ran to Jesus and fell at His feet. The spirits begged not to be sent into the abyss. They had no power to resist His command. Jesus spoke a single word of permission, and they fled into a herd of swine. Notice that it wasn’t a long ritual; it was the presence of the Son of God and the word He spoke.
When His followers asked why they had been unable to drive out a particularly stubborn spirit, Jesus pointed to unbelief and the need for prayer and fasting. Some entrenched strongholds require a deeper communion with God, a giving of oneself wholly to Him in dependence. But the root is always faith in Christ. He did not leave us defenseless. He stripped the enemy of his authority and gave us the right to enforce that victory in His name. Satan’s ranks may be organized in powers and authorities of darkness, but Jesus is far above all rule and authority.
This isn’t about your own strength or a technique you perfect. It is about who Jesus is, and whether your life is centered on Him. Do not be impressed by dramatic manifestations, nor be intimidated by long-standing oppression. The demons recognized Jesus and had to submit. They still do. Stand on the truth that He is Lord. Pray in His name. Fast if the Spirit leads. Declare His victory, not as a formula, but as a person who has already triumphed. The same Jesus who commanded the spirit to leave the boy and who raised the dead now exercises His authority through those who trust Him. You need not remain in fear or torment; eternal life is in Christ Jesus, and He is the deliverer.

Scripture shows us these encounters clearly. In the region of the Gadarenes, a man so tormented by a legion of demons that he cut himself and lived among tombs ran to Jesus and fell at His feet. The spirits begged not to be sent into the abyss. They had no power to resist His command. Jesus spoke a single word of permission, and they fled into a herd of swine. Notice that it wasn’t a long ritual; it was the presence of the Son of God and the word He spoke.
When His followers asked why they had been unable to drive out a particularly stubborn spirit, Jesus pointed to unbelief and the need for prayer and fasting. Some entrenched strongholds require a deeper communion with God, a giving of oneself wholly to Him in dependence. But the root is always faith in Christ. He did not leave us defenseless. He stripped the enemy of his authority and gave us the right to enforce that victory in His name. Satan’s ranks may be organized in powers and authorities of darkness, but Jesus is far above all rule and authority.
This isn’t about your own strength or a technique you perfect. It is about who Jesus is, and whether your life is centered on Him.
