Ex-boyfriend in addiction recovery

Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for my ex-boyfriend. He is a recovering meth addict. We have parted ways for the time being. I want to pray that God gives him the strength to keep working through the 12 steps, and that God gives him healing.

We lift up your ex-boyfriend to the Lord, knowing that true healing and strength come only through Jesus Christ. It is good that you desire to pray for him, for "the effective, earnest prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective" (James 5:16, WEB). However, we must also address a few important matters in light of Scripture.

First, we encourage you to examine your heart regarding this relationship. The Bible teaches that marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, designed by God to reflect Christ’s relationship with the Church (Ephesians 5:31-32). Courtship should be intentional, with marriage as the goal, and both individuals should be believers who are walking in obedience to Christ (2 Corinthians 6:14). Since you refer to him as your "ex-boyfriend," we urge you to prayerfully consider whether this relationship aligns with God’s design. If there is no clear path toward a godly marriage, it may be wise to surrender this relationship to the Lord and trust Him for His perfect will in your life.

Additionally, we must address the reality of addiction. While we rejoice that he is seeking recovery, true freedom from addiction is only found in Christ. The 12 steps can be helpful, but they are not a substitute for the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. "Don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s Kingdom? Don’t be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit God’s Kingdom. Some of you were such, but you were washed. But you were sanctified. But you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God" (1 Corinthians 6:9-11, WEB). Recovery must include repentance and surrender to Jesus, for He alone can break the chains of sin.

We also notice that your prayer request does not invoke the name of Jesus. There is no other name by which we can approach the Father, and salvation is found in no one else (Acts 4:12). If your ex-boyfriend—or anyone—has not yet placed their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, that is the most urgent prayer. "If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9, WEB). Without Christ, there can be no true healing or lasting freedom.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this man who is battling addiction. Lord, we ask that You draw him to Yourself with an undeniable love and conviction. If he does not know You as his Savior, we pray that today would be the day of salvation for him. Open his eyes to see his need for Jesus, and soften his heart to receive Your forgiveness and grace. Break the chains of addiction in his life, Lord, and fill him with Your Holy Spirit so that he may walk in victory.

Father, we also pray for our sister who has submitted this request. Give her wisdom and discernment as she seeks Your will for her life. If this relationship is not aligned with Your perfect plan for her, we ask that You give her the strength to release it to You. Help her to trust in Your goodness and to find her fulfillment in You alone. Guard her heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and lead her into relationships that honor You.

We rebuke the spirit of addiction in the name of Jesus and declare that this man shall be set free by the power of Your might. May he find his identity in Christ and walk in the newness of life that You provide. Strengthen him in his recovery, Lord, but more than that, draw him into a deep, abiding relationship with You.

We ask all these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Finally, we encourage you to seek the Lord’s face in your own life. Ask Him to reveal any areas where you may need to surrender your desires to His will. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6, WEB). If you are not yet part of a strong, Bible-believing church, we urge you to find one where you can grow in your faith and be surrounded by godly counsel. May the Lord bless you and keep you as you seek Him with all your heart.

We're here for you and your ex-boyfriend. We've been praying for him, asking God to give him the strength to keep working through the 12 steps and to heal him. We're reminded of Paul's words in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Let's trust in God's power to help him overcome this addiction.

We also want to encourage you to keep praying for him, even if you're no longer together. Remember, God can use our prayers to bring about change in others' lives. And as we've seen in our previous response, it's crucial to align our relationships with God's design for us.

I prayed that God in Jesus' name will answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God Loves You. Thank You Jesus!!!
