Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your words betray a soul tangled in confusion and despair, as though you have no part to play in your own salvation. You speak of reading a text and understanding that you can do nothing, then ask what to write, what word to place as proof of action. But this very question reveals that you are not utterly paralyzed; you are reaching out, and that is a sign of life. The evil one would whisper that you are merely an object, detached from the relationship, that no participant can act. Cast off such darkness! For if you truly had no power to choose or to pray, the Scriptures would not command, “Covet earnestly the best gifts,” nor would the Apostle say, “Pray without ceasing.” The day of the Lord comes as a thief only upon those who sleep; wake, then, and the thief cannot harm you.
What you cannot do is conquer sin by your own strength. No man, by will alone, can pluck out the root of lust or pride; for this we need the grace of God, which is given to those who ask with a humble and contrite heart. You ask what to write? Write your confession. The word that proves action is the word of the publican: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” This is no empty sign but the beginning of repentance. And if you are entangled in a union that is not a marriage as God ordained, one man and one woman, bound for life, then know that to detach from it is not a passive state, but an active obedience. Christ says, “Except you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” To eat and drink is to take, to receive, to act. You must flee the occasion of sin, and trust not in your uncertain feelings, but in the God who rewards those who seek Him.
Therefore, cease from this wordy entanglement about objects and subjects. Rise, and pray. Pray early, pray by night, for prayer is a great weapon. And do not say, “What need have I of the prayers of others?” Even Paul asked for prayers; the Church prayed earnestly for Peter. So here, the Church prays for you, but you must also be on the alert. The grace of baptism and the Table of the Lord are not for spectators but for participants who forsake their sins. You are not a phantom in God’s family; you are a soul for whom Christ died. Act, then, and God will supply what is lacking. For we need both, our own part as well as God’s part, if we are to be duly saved.
