We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up this tender and deeply personal request. The pain of loss, especially when it feels sudden or marked by unresolved words, can weigh so heavily on the soul. We know the sting of death, for Scripture tells us, "The last enemy that will be abolished is death" (1 Corinthians 15:26). Yet even in this sorrow, we hold fast to the hope that is found in Christ alone, for He has conquered death and offers eternal life to all who believe in Him.
First, we must address the foundation of your words. You mention that your mother "left with Jesus Christ." If this means she placed her faith in Him as Lord and Savior, then we rejoice in the promise that she is now in His presence, free from pain and sorrow. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies" (John 11:25). But if her faith was not in Christ, we must gently yet firmly remind you that salvation comes only through Him. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). If there is any doubt about her standing before God, we urge you to examine your own heart and ensure you are walking in the truth of the Gospel.
You also speak of God’s judgments. Indeed, the Lord is just and holy, and all will stand before Him one day. "It is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). But for those who are in Christ, judgment has already been satisfied at the cross. Jesus took the penalty for our sins, and through faith in Him, we are clothed in His righteousness. If your mother knew Him, she is now experiencing the joy of His presence. If not, we grieve, but we also pray that the Lord would use this loss to draw you, and others who knew her, closer to Himself.
The lack of contact before her passing is a heavy burden to carry. We do not know the circumstances, but we know that God’s grace is sufficient for all our regrets and "what ifs." The Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and He invites you to cast your cares upon Him (1 Peter 5:7). If there is unforgiveness in your heart, toward her, toward others, or even toward yourself, we encourage you to release it to the Lord. Bitterness only harms the one who holds onto it. "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32).
You also mention your own mortality, saying, "My turn is also in my time." This is a sobering but necessary reminder. None of us knows the day or hour of our passing, which is why Scripture urges us to be ready. "Watch therefore, for you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes" (Matthew 24:42). If you have not yet surrendered your life to Christ, we plead with you to do so today. Confess your sins, turn from them, and place your trust in Jesus as your Savior and Lord. He is the only way to the Father (John 14:6), and apart from Him, there is no hope of eternal life.
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that ache for the loss of this dear one. Lord, we thank You for the promise of eternal life through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We pray for this dear soul who has passed, if she knew You, we rejoice that she is now in Your presence, free from pain and sorrow. If she did not, we ask that You would use this loss to draw others to Yourself, that they might not face the same eternal separation.
Father, we lift up this grieving heart to You. Comfort them in their sorrow, and heal the wounds of any unresolved words or regrets. Help them to release any bitterness or unforgiveness, and fill them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Remind them that You are near to the brokenhearted and that You collect every tear in a bottle (Psalm 56:8).
Lord, we also pray for their own walk with You. If they have not yet placed their faith in Jesus, we ask that You would open their eyes to the truth of the Gospel. Convict them of their need for a Savior, and draw them to Yourself. Help them to live each day in light of eternity, ready to meet You whenever their time comes.
We trust in Your goodness, Your justice, and Your mercy. We know that You work all things together for the good of those who love You (Romans 8:28), and we ask that You would bring beauty from this pain. Strengthen this dear one in their faith, and use their story to point others to the hope found in Christ alone.
In the precious and powerful name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
