### eternal

Your words betray a soul tangled in confusion and despair, as though you have no part to play in your own salvation. You speak of reading a text and understanding that you can do nothing, then ask what to write, what word to place as proof of action. But this very question reveals that you are not utterly paralyzed; you are reaching out, and that is a sign of life. The evil one would whisper that you are merely an object, detached from the relationship, that no participant can act. Cast off such darkness! For if you truly had no power to choose or to pray, the Scriptures would not command, “Covet earnestly the best gifts,” nor would the Apostle say, “Pray without ceasing.” The day of the Lord comes as a thief only upon those who sleep; wake, then, and the thief cannot harm you.

What you cannot do is conquer sin by your own strength. No man, by will alone, can pluck out the root of lust or pride; for this we need the grace of God, which is given to those who ask with a humble and contrite heart. You ask what to write? Write your confession. The word that proves action is the word of the publican: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” This is no empty sign but the beginning of repentance. And if you are entangled in a union that is not a marriage as God ordained, one man and one woman, bound for life, then know that to detach from it is not a passive state, but an active obedience. Christ says, “Except you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” To eat and drink is to take, to receive, to act. You must flee the occasion of sin, and trust not in your uncertain feelings, but in the God who rewards those who seek Him.

Therefore, cease from this wordy entanglement about objects and subjects. Rise, and pray. Pray early, pray by night, for prayer is a great weapon. And do not say, “What need have I of the prayers of others?” Even Paul asked for prayers; the Church prayed earnestly for Peter. So here, the Church prays for you, but you must also be on the alert. The grace of baptism and the Table of the Lord are not for spectators but for participants who forsake their sins. You are not a phantom in God’s family; you are a soul for whom Christ died. Act, then, and God will supply what is lacking. For we need both, our own part as well as God’s part, if we are to be duly saved.

There is a deep relief hidden in what you have glimpsed: you cannot do anything. That is not a dead end. It is the doorway. The whole struggle of the human heart is to construct some proof, to place a word of our own action into the record, so that we can point to something we have done. But if you could secure your own standing, you could never have full assurance, because you would always be wondering if your effort was enough. The assurance you are looking for cannot be found by detaching the subject from the object or by finding the right formula in any language. It comes from the outside, as a gift.

What you need settled is the vertical axis, your relationship with God. If that is out of balance, every other relationship and every attempt to understand will be fractured. You are trying to find the right word to prove an action, yet God has already spoken the final word. The record is this: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life. You are not in a legal relationship where you must produce the proof to satisfy the court. That relationship, by its very nature, lacks full assurance because it always depends on your performance. You are meant for something far closer, an intimate relationship where the Spirit bears witness with your spirit.

Stop leaning on your own understanding to grasp how subject and object, participant and non-participant, fit together. The search for wisdom and understanding is good, but it must lead you to the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning. If you cry out for discernment and seek it like silver, you will find the knowledge of God. And there you will discover that your identity is not found in your ability to act, but in Christ’s completed action. Because Jesus is the eternal God who entered time, His work is an eternal work. You can be knit together in love and reach the full riches of complete assurance, not by analyzing your own faith or your own words, but by trusting His grace.

You asked about the eternal perspective. God has made an investment in you, and He always has your eternal good in view. Even the confusion you feel now, the light affliction of a mind overwhelmed, is working for you an eternal weight of glory, if you will see it within that framework. You want a proof of the action, but the proof is not a word you place; it is a life that is hidden with Christ in God. The promise is given by a God who cannot lie. You signify the relationship correctly when you call Jesus Lord, which immediately declares you His servant. But He also calls you a friend and a child. That relationship is the constant, the source of fullness of joy, even when your own mind feels unclear.

These things are written so that you may know that you have eternal life. That knowing is not a detached, academic fact for a participant or a non-participant. It is the rock-solid confidence that because He lives, you live. Do not look inward at your emptiness, your lack of Finnish, or your inability to frame the proof. Look outward at His sufficiency. He is the author and finisher of your faith. Rest there, and you will have the blessed assurance you seek.

We are so grateful you entrusted us with your heartfelt prayer request, sharing the weight of feeling overwhelmed in a situation where words and understanding seem just out of reach. It touched us deeply to lift up your need for clarity, wisdom, and divine guidance as you navigated this challenge with language and relationship.

We have been praying that the Holy Spirit would move as your Helper—illuminating your mind, giving you the right words, and softening hearts in any strained connection. We asked the Lord to reveal His truth, restore what feels detached, and bring peace where there has been confusion. We also prayed for protection over your faith, that even in uncertainty, you would sense God’s nearness and trust His perfect timing.

If the Lord has answered this prayer in any way—whether through a breakthrough in understanding, a restored relationship, or even just a quiet assurance in your spirit—we would love to rejoice with you. Please share a praise report so we can give Him all the glory together. If you’re still waiting on an answer, we want to continue standing with you in prayer. Consider posting this request again, and we will faithfully lift it up once more, believing God is at work even when we cannot yet see it.

May the Father draw near to you, fill you with His peace, and remind you that you are never alone in this journey. Keep seeking Him, for He delights in revealing Himself to those who earnestly seek His face. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
