Entrust

We hear your question and we understand the weight of it, for the relationship between a child and a mother is one that God holds as very significant and often very tender.

To entrust your mother to the Lord does not automatically mean you must immediately reconcile in the sense of restoring the relationship to close fellowship as if nothing has happened. Entrusting her to the Lord means you are releasing her into His hands, His care, His correction, and His perfect will, rather than carrying the burden yourself. We are told to cast all our worries on him, because he cares for us in 1 Peter 5:7 and to cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you in Psalm 55:22. That is an act of faith and obedience where you acknowledge that God is sovereign, that He loves her, and that He is the only One who can truly change a heart.

What God does require of us is forgiveness and honor. We are commanded to honor your father and your mother in Exodus 20:12 and again in Ephesians 6:2. We are also commanded to be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you in Ephesians 4:32 and to forgive each other as Christ forgave you in Colossians 3:13. Forgiveness is a choice we make before God to release bitterness and the right to vengeance, and we are to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us in Matthew 5:44. Forgiveness is required of us whether the other person repents or not.

Reconciliation, however, is different from forgiveness. Reconciliation requires two willing hearts, truth, repentance, and rebuilt trust. Scripture says if it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men in Romans 12:18. That verse shows us that peace is not always possible because it does not depend only on us. God is the God of reconciliation and He has given us the ministry of reconciliation in 2 Corinthians 5:18, and we should desire restoration where it is holy and healthy, but reconciliation without repentance or while ongoing harm continues is not biblical restoration, it is enabling. To honor your mother does not mean you must subject yourself to abuse, manipulation, or unrepentant sin. It means you speak truth in love, you set godly boundaries, you do not return evil for evil, and you continue to pray for her and wish her good.

So entrusting her to the Lord frees you to forgive her from your heart, to honor her position as your mother, and to pray for her salvation and healing, while also seeking wisdom about what reconciliation should look like. Sometimes that wisdom means a season of distance with prayer, sometimes it means limited contact with clear boundaries, and sometimes by God's grace it means a full restoration over time as God works in both hearts. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding in Proverbs 3:5.

We also want to gently address that you said entrust to the Lord. We want to make sure you know that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me in John 14:6 and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved in Acts 4:12. To entrust your mother to the Lord is to entrust her to Jesus, believing that He died for her sins and rose again, and that He alone can save and transform her. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your own complete trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, confessing your sins and receiving His forgiveness, for that is the foundation of all prayer.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift this dear one to You who is wrestling with how to love and honor their mother while also walking in wisdom. Lord, we ask You to take this mother into Your hands, to keep her, to convict her where she needs conviction, to comfort her where she is wounded, and to draw her to Yourself. We pray that You would give healing where there has been hurt, and that You would pour out Your grace upon this family. Lord, give Your child wisdom to forgive fully as You have forgiven us, to release bitterness, and to honor their mother in a way that pleases You without compromising truth or holiness. Show them what healthy boundaries look like, and if it is Your will, lead them step by step toward a godly reconciliation that is marked by repentance, honesty, and love. If reconciliation is not yet possible, help them to remain at peace and to continue to entrust her to You day by day. Fill their heart with Your peace that surpasses understanding and help them to trust You with all their heart. We ask all of this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and only Savior, amen.

Thank you for asking this so honestly. It is a heavy and loving question to hold.

Entrusting your mother to the Lord does not automatically mean you have to restore the relationship as it was. We have come to understand forgiveness and reconciliation as different things. Forgiveness is something that can happen in your own heart before God, a decision to release resentment and the need to settle the score, and over time to find more peace toward the other person. Reconciliation is different. It is the rebuilding of trust and closeness together, and it needs willingness and safety on both sides.

So entrusting her to the Lord can look like placing her life and your pain in His hands each day, asking Him to care for her and to guide you, while you still have wisdom about what contact is healthy. For some, reconciliation becomes possible slowly with clear boundaries and changed behavior. For others, loving from a distance is the most faithful way for a season.

A next step that helps many is to name what entrusting means for you this week in practical terms, and to talk it through with a pastor or wise counselor who knows your story and can help you think about boundaries.

Father, we entrust this person and their mother to You. Give clarity, peace and wisdom for each decision, guard both in Your care and draw each closer to You. Lead in Your timing and in Your way. In Jesus name, amen.

To entrust your mother to the Lord is to do what faith itself requires, to commit her soul and your sorrow concerning her into the hands of Him who is both just and merciful. It is to say with the Psalmist, when I am afraid I will trust in Thee, and to know that He is the Pilot even in rough weather, so that you need not carry the weight of what you cannot mend.

This entrusting does not of itself demand that you effect a full reconciliation at once, though it does call you to a heart of forgiveness. Scripture sets before us this pattern, forgiving one another even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. That forgiveness is a divine forgiveness, complete and free, blotting out the debt because Christ has borne it. If you have received such mercy, you are called to extend mercy from the heart, to release the debt, to leave vengeance with the Lord, and to wish no ill but to pray for her good.

Forgiveness and reconciliation, however, are not the same thing. Forgiveness is given freely before God, as God has forgiven you, and it can be exercised though the other has not asked for it. Reconciliation is a walking together again, and that requires truth, repentance and, where there has been wounding, a change of way that makes fellowship safe and honest. The apostle says, if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. That word, if it be possible, teaches us that peace is to be pursued, but it takes two to make peace, and you cannot alone make a broken relationship whole.

To entrust her to the Lord therefore means first to draw near to God yourself through the precious blood of Christ, at the mercy seat, and to leave her there. You confess your own need of forgiveness, you ask the Lord to work in her according to His wisdom and mercy, and you release into His hands both your hurt and your hope for what restoration He may bring.

If reconciliation is to come, let it come in the Lord's way and time, with honesty, with godly counsel, and with boundaries that honor both truth and love. It may mean prayer from a distance for a season, it may mean kind words and open doors as God gives opportunity, it may mean patient waiting while the Lord works. In all of it, commit the day's trouble to your Father each morning, believe that there is forgiveness with Him, and ask Him to make you tenderhearted while you trust Him to do what is right.

Seek the face of Christ who alone is the way to the Father, keep your own heart clean before God, pray for your mother that she may know the forgiveness that is with God through Jesus Christ, and walk as wisdom and faithful counselors before the Lord shall direct you, leaving the outcome in His faithful hands.

Entrusting your mother to the Lord is a good and faithful step. It means you place her life and her soul into God's hands, acknowledging that you cannot control her or change her heart, but He can care for her and work in her according to His wisdom and mercy.

That act does not automatically require you to return to the same kind of close relationship as before, but it also does not set aside what God commands. God commanded, Honor your father and your mother, and that command is not made void. To honor does not always mean to live together or to act as if hurt did not happen. It does mean to not curse or despise her, to speak truthfully about her, to pray for her, and to not bear malice toward her.

A large part of entrusting is forgiveness. Forgiveness does not require great labors or journeys, only a willing heart. You are called to forgive as God in Christ has forgiven you, to release bitterness and the desire for revenge. Forgiveness can take place in your heart before God even when trust has not been rebuilt. Reconciliation is different from forgiveness. Reconciliation is the restoring of close fellowship and trust, and it depends on both people. It requires honesty, repentance where there has been wrong, and safety. Scripture says, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with all. That means you are to be willing for peace and to not hold hatred, but you cannot force the other person to change, and you must use wisdom about boundaries, especially if there has been harm or ongoing sin.

So entrusting your mother to the Lord frees you to do what is yours to do. Pray for her regularly and ask God to draw her to Himself and to work for her good, choose to forgive and to refuse bitterness, and honor her as your mother in ways that are truthful and appropriate. If reconciliation is possible in a way that is healthy and honors God, pursue it with wise counsel. If it is not wise or safe at this time, you can still honor and love her from a distance while leaving her in God's care. Seek counsel from a pastor or mature believer in your local church who knows your situation, so you can discern next steps with wisdom and grace.
