We join you in coming as little children in faith before our Heavenly Father and we thank you for bringing this question about dreams and visions before the Lord, for your heart to seek His will and His speaking to this husband and wife and entire family is beautiful to see.
We affirm what you have shared from Scripture that God has indeed spoken in dreams and visions in both the Old and New Testaments. As it is written, For God speaks once, yes twice, though man pays no attention. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, in slumbering on the bed, then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction, Job 33:14-16. And He said, Hear now my words. If there is a prophet among you, I Yahweh will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak with him in a dream, Num 12:6. We remember how the wise men were warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, Matt 2:12, and how a vision appeared to Paul in the night with a man of Macedonia pleading with him, Acts 16:9. And we cherish the promise, It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions, Joel 2:28, which Peter declared was fulfilled at Pentecost, Acts 2:17.
At the same time we want to gently encourage you with the full counsel of God concerning how He speaks to us now. We are told God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, has at the end of these days spoken to us by his Son, Heb 1:1-2. The foundation has been laid through the Son and through the Holy Spirit speaking through the apostles, John 16:13, 1 Cor 3:11, Eph 2:20. We now have the complete, sufficient Word of God, and we are told All Scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work, 2 Tim 3:16-17. This means we do not seek dreams or visions as new revelation equal to or above Scripture, nor do we seek them as our primary guide, because the Word itself is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, Psalm 119:105.
We do believe our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, Heb 13:8, and His arm is not shortened that it cannot save, Isa 59:1, and that He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, Eph 3:20, and that nothing is impossible with God, Luke 1:37. He is free to encourage, warn, or direct His children in a dream in the night if He so chooses, and He can use a dream to turn a person from wrongdoing and keep them from pride, Job 33:17, but any dream or vision must always be tested against Scripture. We are commanded, Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophesies. Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good, 1 Thess 5:19-21, and Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, 1 John 4:1, for even Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light, 2 Cor 11:14, and can bring deceptive dreams. Therefore we never build doctrine or direction on a dream alone, but we bring every impression to the Word and to wise, godly counsel.
We also rejoice that you prayed in the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. Your confidence in Heb 7:25 that He lives to make intercession for us and Rom 8:34 is well placed.
So we pray together with you now.
Heavenly Father, we thank You that You have spoken so clearly through Your Son and through Your holy Word, and that You have given us Your Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. We thank You for Your faithfulness to this husband and wife and their entire family. We ask in the name of Jesus that You would deepen their understanding of Your Word, that You would open their eyes as You did for the disciples, Luke 24:45, and give them the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You, Eph 1:17. If it is Your will, give them dreams and visions that align with Your Word to encourage them, to warn them, and to keep them from the pit, Job 33:18, but above all make them lovers of Your Word, that they may discern Your perfect will, Rom 12:2.
Father, we ask that You keep this family from temptation, deception, and the evil one, Matt 6:13, John 17:15, 2 Thess 3:3. Guard them from lies, fear, and every deceit of the enemy who prowls as a roaring lion, 1 Pet 5:8, and who deceives the whole world, Rev 12:9. Help them to walk in humility, truth, and purity, to test every spirit, and to hold fast to what is good. Pour out Your Spirit upon them afresh, not for spectacle but for holiness, for power to live for Christ, and for boldness to make Your Son known. Make their marriage strong, faithful, and Christ-centered, a picture of Christ and His church, Eph 5:31-32, as they seek You together.
We thank You in advance, trusting that You hear us when we ask according to Your will, 1 John 5:14, and that You are able to do all things, Job 42:2. We ask all this in the mighty and precious name of Jesus, our intercessor and our Amen, Rev 3:14, 2 Cor 1:20, Amen.
