Does Jesus give up

We hear the heaviness in your question and we want to assure you that Jesus does not give up on your marriage, even when your spouse seems unresponsive to His promises and His word.

Our Lord is faithful when we are not, and His love does not waver based on human response. Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us that His loving kindnesses never fail and His mercies are new every morning, and Hebrews 13:5 tells us He Himself has said, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you. Just as Jesus did not give up on us while we were still sinners, He does not abandon the covenant of marriage that He ordained.

We believe marriage is a sacred covenant before God between one man and one woman for life, and what therefore God has joined together, let no man separate Matthew 19:6. God has said He hates divorce Malachi 2:16 not because He wants anyone to remain in unrepentant hurt, but because He designed marriage to reflect His own faithful, enduring covenant love for His people. His promises remain true even when one spouse is hard hearted or slow to respond.

That does not mean Jesus forces your spouse to respond. God honors the free will He has given each person, and He continues to work, to convict, to draw, and to intercede even when we cannot see it. We are called not to grow weary in doing what is right, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up Galatians 6:9. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things 1 Corinthians 13:7 and that enduring love is the love Christ models for us and calls us to walk in within marriage.

If your spouse is not responding, we encourage you to continue to stand in prayer and in faithful obedience, not in nagging or manipulation, but in a quiet and godly life. In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any do not obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word 1 Peter 3:1 and this principle of a godly example applies to husbands as well. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified in the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified in the husband 1 Corinthians 7:14. Your faithful prayers and your Christlike love are powerful tools in the hands of God.

We encourage you to remain rooted in the Word, to seek wise and biblical counsel from your pastors or elders, to guard your own heart from bitterness, and to set healthy and biblical boundaries while still honoring your vows. Keep praying for your spouse by name, keep speaking truth in love, and keep trusting that nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord Romans 8:38-39, and that same love is at work for your marriage.

We pray together with you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up this marriage to You. Lord, You see the pain of feeling alone in standing for this covenant and the discouragement when Your promises seem unanswered. We ask You to strengthen the one who is standing and to renew hope where hope has grown weary. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon this spouse who is not yet responding, soften the hardened heart, open blinded eyes, and draw them back to You and back to this covenant. Help the one praying to love as You love, to forgive as You forgive, and to remain faithful without growing bitter or weary. Let Your will be done in this marriage and let Your name be glorified through restoration, healing, and repentance where it is needed. We trust that You are still working even when we cannot see it, and we rest in Your unfailing love. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior we pray, amen.

We hear how heavy this question feels, and how lonely it can be to keep holding on to promises for your marriage when your spouse does not seem to be moving at all.

Jesus does not step away from you because your spouse is not responding. His care for you stays steady even on the days when nothing appears to be changing at home. At the same time, a marriage is lived out by two hearts, and you can only faithfully steward your own. It is painful to love wholeheartedly when the other heart stays closed, and it is understandable to wonder if that distance means God has given up.

He has not given up on you, and He still honors the covenant of marriage. He also does not force a person's heart to open. That tension is why this season can feel so confusing and exhausting.

One step that often helps is to not carry this alone. We encourage you to invite one wise, biblically grounded pastor or older couple who knows you both to walk with you regularly, to pray with you and help you discern what faithfulness looks like right now, one day at a time, while you keep your own walk with the Lord nurtured.

Father, we lift this dear one and this marriage to You. You see the prayers that have been prayed and the ache when there is no response. Give comfort and clarity today, guard this heart in Your care, grant wisdom for each next decision, and draw both spouses closer to Yourself. Lead in Your will and Your timing. In Jesus' name, amen.

The answer to your heavy question is that Jesus Christ does not give up as men give up, and His faithfulness is not measured by the response of man.

He having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them unto the end. That is the very character of our Lord set forth in John 13:1. He had chosen companions who were poor and worldly and slow of heart, and He must have been greatly grieved by them, yet He did not turn away. Their sinfulness could not travel so far but what His love would travel beyond it, and their unbelief could not be extended to so great a length but what His faithfulness would still be wider and broader than their unfaithfulness. It is impossible that Jesus should forsake a soul that hangs upon Him.

You ask concerning your marriage. Know then what marriage is in the sight of God. It is a covenant, and our God is a covenant keeping God. He will ever be mindful of His Covenant. Though we forget the covenant by our unspiritual carelessness, yet God remembers His covenant. He made it of His own free love according to the good pleasure of His will, and He remembers with whom He made it. When His people were in affliction and their covenant seemed to be in abeyance, for their sake He remembered His covenant. This is the great ground of hope for all who are in covenant with God.

And you who are joined to Christ have laid hold upon that covenant. Every promise of His is a part of that covenant, and if you get a grip by faith of any of His promises so that it becomes truly yours, you have laid hold of His covenant and that covenant shall stand secure when earths huge columns crumble. There is no fear of the covenant failing, even when heaven and earth shall pass away. So take hold of His covenant now in prayer. Lay hold upon the horns of the altar. Plead His promises concerning marriage, concerning the household where Christ is the pattern of the Husband and His Church the spouse. He has shown what manner of love the Bridegroom has bestowed, and that love is unity, faithful, enduring. Remember that it is one of Satans tricks to try to discourage you, but it is Gods will to increase your hope, for thereby you increase in purity and perseverance.

Does your spouse not respond to His promises and words at this present time. This is a great sorrow, and it is felt by the Lord Himself who long waits for the wandering to return. Yet the unresponsiveness of one party does not make the faithfulness of Christ to fail toward you who do respond. He stands surety for His own. He fulfilled the broken law and offered satisfaction to the justice of God, and He will perfect that which concerns you.

Therefore do not indulge the wicked thought that He has forsaken your marriage while you are yet seeking Him. Continue as Gods pupil, taught by Him from your youth until now, declaring His wondrous works even with tears. Chastened you may be, but never cast out while you abide in Him. Bring your marriage before Him daily, not pleading your own worth but pleading His mercy and His covenant grace. Ask Him for His mercys sake to pass over guilt, to grant repentance and softness of heart where there is hardness, and to restore what sin has broken. There is a fountain opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that they may wash and be clean, and that fountain is open still for husband and wife alike.

Hold fast to Christ Himself, for salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and it is in Him that every covenant blessing is yea and amen. Cling to Him, trust His Word, walk in holiness and love within that lifelong covenant of one man and one woman which God has ordained, keeping yourself from all that defiles that union, for sex and living together belong within it alone. And pray that your spouse may be brought by the same grace to lay hold of Christ also, for then you shall together prove that not one good thing has failed of all that the Lord has promised.

May the Lord who is ever mindful of His covenant be mindful of you and your household, and give you grace to persevere in faith and prayer until you see His deliverance.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Jesus does not give up on a marriage because one spouse is slow to hear or hard of heart. His way is to come to us while we are still poor and unworthy, to take us to himself and to remain faithful when we are unfaithful. As a bridegroom comes to his bride, so Christ came to our nature when it could not go up to him, and he does not quickly cast away what he has joined to himself.

That does not mean he forces a response. He makes promises and he keeps them, but he often asks us to wait and to trust him over a long time. Unbelief often comes not because his promise has failed, but because we grow fainthearted and impatient. To believe is to be patient, to account him worthy to be trusted even when the answer is not yet seen. You were saved by hope, and hope that is seen is not hope. What you brought to him at the first was trust in what he promised for the future, and that same trust is what will keep you now. Hold it fast and do not let it go because everything is not given in this life at once.

For you, this means to continue grounded and steadfast and not moved away. It is possible to stand and yet be wavering and tossed. He calls you to be not only standing but not even moved, continuing in faith and in the hope that is laid up for you. Perseverance itself often makes the heart ready to receive. Even when he first answered the Canaanite woman with a hard word, he still gave the bread because of her perseverance. Your continued prayer, offered with humility and without ceasing, is not wasted.

Take care how you pray for your spouse. Do not pray against your spouse as an enemy, but pray for mercy and for softening of heart. Marriage is honorable and it is meant to preserve holiness. Whether married or unmarried, we are called to live chastely and faithfully, not giving place to defilement, but keeping the covenant pure as an offering to God. That faithful, orderly living within marriage is itself a witness.

So do not measure the faithfulness of Jesus by the immediate response of your spouse. Measure it by his own cross and his own patience toward you. Keep praying, keep doing good, keep following peace with all people and holiness within your home. Seek wise counsel in your church, stay under the word, and let other believers help bear the burden with you. If your spouse remains unresponsive for a time, your calling remains to be faithful, prayerful, and hopeful, trusting that the one who began a good work is able to complete it and will not betray you in what is to come.
