We thank you for sharing this honestly and we rejoice with you that you have left the new age behind and returned to Christ, for He is faithful to forgive and to cleanse us when we turn from darkness to His light. We want to speak plainly with you about divination because God takes it very seriously. There shall not be found with you anyone who uses divination, one who practices sorcery, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer Deuteronomy 18:10 and we are told that rebellion is as the sin of divination 1 Samuel 15:23. Those practices open a door to the enemy and even after we repent, the enemy will try to keep that door open through intrusive thoughts, accusations, and counterfeit spiritual experiences. We praise God for the steps you are taking to walk in true forgiveness and obedience to Christ, for if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9, and we encourage you to continue to renounce every new age practice, teaching, and object completely, to destroy or discard anything that remains connected to it, and to confess it fully before the Lord.
What you are describing with these loud, intrusive thoughts about your ex, whether he is moving on or missing you and wanting to come back, is not the voice of the Holy Spirit. The enemy can mix lies with occasional accuracy to keep you in bondage and to keep your mind occupied with chaos and false hope. Even if a thought seems to come true at times, that does not mean it is from God. We are to test the spirits whether they are of God 1 John 4:1 and we know that the devil prowls like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour 1 Peter 5:8. Trying to ignore the thoughts in your own strength will not bring freedom, we must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians 10:5 and be transformed by the renewing of our mind Romans 12:2. That means when the thought comes, we bring it immediately to Jesus, we speak truth over it from Scripture, and we replace it with what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely and of good report Philippians 4:8. We also submit ourselves therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you James 4:7 and we put on the whole armor of God that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil Ephesians 6:11. This is daily spiritual warfare, not a passive waiting for the thoughts to fade.
We want to affirm your obedience in breaking up with this man because you were unequally yoked and he is not a Christian. You did what is right and pleasing to the Lord. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity 2 Corinthians 6:14. We believe marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman designed by God, and any courtship should be with the goal of finding a godly spouse who is a believer in Jesus Christ, not simply a partner or boyfriend. Intimacy and sexual union belong only within that marriage covenant, and any intimacy outside of marriage is fornication which God calls us to flee from. We do not know if that was part of your past relationship, but if there was any sexual sin we encourage you to confess it and receive His cleansing as well, for God is gracious to restore purity to a repentant heart. Your statement that you cannot be together unless he is a Christian is biblically sound and we stand with you in that conviction. We also hear your tender hope that he might come to faith and that you could end up together, and while that desire is understandable, we encourage you to surrender that hope fully to the Lord and not let thoughts of him coming back keep you in emotional torment. If God in His mercy does save him, that will be for his eternal soul first, not for the sake of the relationship, and any future consideration of marriage would need to be with much time, evidence of genuine conversion and discipleship, and wise counsel, not on the basis of old feelings or divination-like impressions.
We also hear how painful it is when those thoughts create hope that never materializes. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7 and He desires to give you peace that surpasses understanding as you bring your anxieties to Him in prayer Philippians 4:6-7. We encourage you to fill your mind daily with the Word, to pray aloud in the name of Jesus when the attacks come, to worship, and to stay in fellowship with mature believers who can pray with you and help you discern.
We pray together for you now. Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, for there is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved and have access to Your throne Acts 4:12, John 14:6. We thank You for drawing our sister back to Yourself and for forgiving her as she has repented of new age and divination. We ask You to cleanse her completely, to break every remaining tie and whisper of that divining spirit, and to fill her with Your Holy Spirit. Lord, we take authority in Jesus name over every intrusive, tormenting thought and we command the enemy to flee. Renew her mind by Your Word, give her power to take every thought captive to Christ, and replace chaos with Your perfect peace. Heal the pain of this broken relationship, guard her heart from false hope, and help her to trust You fully with her future spouse if it is Your will for her to marry a godly Christian man. We also lift up this ex to You, Lord, we ask for his salvation, that You would open his eyes to the error of his beliefs, convict him of sin and draw him to Jesus, not for the sake of this relationship but for his eternal life. We pray the same for his loved ones, that You would bring faithful witnesses into their lives and that they would come to know You. Strengthen our sister to walk in forgiveness and obedience, and let her know she is deeply loved, forgiven, and being made new in Christ. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
