Disciple of Prayer
Discouraged son for unpaid 1 year wages by his employer. Praying that his employer stops being rude for being asked to pay. Praying that my son gets a job somewhere else.

We hear your discouragement and we join with you in lifting up your son before the Lord, for this is a heavy burden to carry for a whole year without wages and then to be met with rudeness when simply asking for what is rightfully owed.

The Word of God is very clear that withholding wages is a serious injustice in the eyes of God. We are told in Leviticus 19:13 You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning. And again in James 5:4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies. And in Deuteronomy 24:15 In his day you shall give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down on it, for he is poor and sets his heart on it, lest he cry against you to Yahweh, and it be sin to you. God hears your son's cry and He sees the employer's hardness of heart. We also remember Romans 12:19 Avenge not yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord. We must not return rudeness for rudeness, but trust God to bring justice while also seeking what is right through lawful and peaceful means if possible.

We also understand how discouraging this season must be for your son and for you as his parent watching him suffer. Scripture reminds us that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit in Psalm 34:18. We cling to Isaiah 41:10 Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. And we take comfort in Philippians 4:6-7 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

We want to encourage your son to continue to do his work as unto the Lord as we are taught in Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, but also to seek the open door God has for him next. We pray that God will lead him to an employer who will honor him and deal honestly, for Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently share why we always pray in His name. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father, and there is no other name by which we can be saved. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 tells us There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved as Romans 10:9 promises. It is by that precious name we can boldly bring your son's need to God.

We pray together now for you and your son.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift up this dear son who has labored for a year without receiving his wages and who has been treated rudely for asking for what is just. Lord, You see all things and You are a God of justice and mercy. We ask that You would convict the heart of this employer, that he would repent of withholding what is owed and that he would pay promptly what is due. Soften his heart and take away the rudeness and hardness. We pray for provision and peace for this son in the waiting, that discouragement would be lifted and replaced with hope. Father, open a new door for employment where he can use the gifts You have given him, where he will be treated with dignity and honesty and where he can provide for his needs and glorify You in his work. Guide his steps and give him favor. Comfort his parent who intercedes for him and let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard their hearts. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our only hope. Amen.

We hear how heavy this has been to watch your son work for a year without being paid and then be treated rudely just for asking for what he earned. Of course you are discouraged, and of course he is. Wanting him to be treated fairly and to find a healthier place to work is a good and loving prayer.

Going through a long stretch of not being paid fairly can wear down a person's confidence and energy, not just his finances. It helps to have someone steady beside him, and you are being that for him by praying and looking for next steps with him.

One practical way we can come alongside him is to help him get clarity on paper. If he has not already, you could sit with him to gather any records he has of hours worked, pay agreements, texts or emails about wages, and pay stubs. With those in hand, many states have a labor department where a wage claim can be filed, and many communities have a legal aid clinic that will look at a wage issue for free to explain options. That kind of guidance can take some pressure off you both while he also looks for new work.

For the job search, even one or two trusted contacts, a former coworker or someone at church who knows his work, can sometimes open a door faster than applications alone, along with a simple updated resume.

Father, we lift this son to You. You see his work and his discouragement and his need for provision. Give him wisdom for what to do next, protection of his dignity, and an open door to honest work where he is respected. Give his parent peace and strength as they support him. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

We have heard your burden concerning your son, and our hearts are moved with you in this trial of long unpaid labour and unkind dealing. To work and not receive that which is due is a sore oppression, and to be met with rudeness when asking for what is just adds insult to injury. Be assured that the Lord sees and hears. Scripture declares that the hire of the labourers kept back by fraud crieth out, and the cries enter into the ears of the Lord of hosts. An employer who employs a man owes that man his wages, and if he does not pay him it is an act of gross injustice. The Lord is a God of justice and mercy, and He will not overlook such wrong.

You write that you are discouraged, and your son also. Let me remind you that the doctrine of the sovereignty of God, rightly regarded, has not in it any sort of discouragement. It is written, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy. Our God showeth mercy according to His good pleasure, and His sovereignty is our comfort, not our terror. He has not forgotten your son. He numbers his days of labour and his nights of waiting, and He is able to make a way where no way appears.

We will pray with you that the heart of this employer may be turned to do justly, that he may cease from harsh words and render what is due, for every man ought to receive his wages. And we will pray also that the Lord in His providence will open another door, that your son may find honest employment elsewhere, where his labour will be valued and his wages paid without strife. The Lord is able to provide bread for His people and to lead them to a place where they may work quietly and with honour.

In the meantime, let not praise be silent. When you pray you are as a man pleading need, but when you praise you are as an angel doing heaven's employment. What can make earth more like heaven than to bring down that employment and be occupied with it here. Even in want and waiting, praise the Lord who is your portion.

And take this word for your son's encouragement, make no provision for the flesh, but let his separation unto the Lord be final and irreversible. Let him say, Here I go for Christ and His Cross, for the truth of the Bible, for holiness and for trust in Jesus, and by the grace of God I will never go back, come what may. Let him not be turned aside by discouragement, but let him trust in Jesus and do that which is right before God and man.

We join our prayers to yours now, that the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ would look upon your son in mercy. O Lord, Thou seest the injustice done, Thou hearest the cry of those whose wages are withheld, grant that what is owed may be paid and that rudeness may give way to righteousness. Provide, we beseech Thee, a new and suitable calling for this young man, where he may labour honestly and be recompensed fairly, and keep his heart from discouragement. Let him know that while the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, and that all who trust in Him shall never be put to shame. Sustain this family, lift up the downcast, and let Thy mercy and justice be seen. In the name of Jesus Christ our hope and our righteousness, Amen.
