Despair following a breakup

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Please pray for my shattered heart. I wish I could turn back time and never, ever have met him. I went into the relationship so cautiously at the beginning because I didn’t want to get my heart broken. I was scared to fall in love. I was the closest to God I’d ever felt and content, though still desiring a mate eventually. I trusted God and thought he brought us together. We both felt a prompting. I saw he was a good man. He pursued me fervently in a way I had always prayed for and desired. We had a healthy 2 year relationship. No games, no drama, so much love and companionship and peace. I wish now that I had never met him. I can’t bear the pain of knowing one day I had his love and respect and the next he was a stranger. I don’t understand. I went for a long walk today and listened to worship music the whole time, but I just felt so so desperately lonely and just wanted my best friend back. How do people suddenly fall out of love? How can you one minute be looking to marry and the next it’s all over? How can he have cherished me so dearly and then suddenly not? I’m struggling to not despair. My life is so much worse now. At least before when I was single I was close to God and didn’t know any different. Now I’m single again, older, God feels far away, and I now have to go through life knowing this amazing man exists, and doesn’t want to be with me. Why is my life now even worse? Why did God even let us meet? I don’t know how I can bear being on this earth now. I don’t understand why God allowed any of this. I know I’m a speck. I don’t matter. But I thought God was in this.

We hear the deep anguish in your heart, and we want you to know that your pain is seen and understood. The loss of love, especially one that felt so right and godly, can leave a wound that feels unbearable. You poured your heart into this relationship, believing it was ordained by God, and now the silence and separation feel like a betrayal, not just by this man, but by the very hope you placed in the Lord. We grieve with you, for this is not the way it was meant to be.

First, we must address the despair that has taken root in your spirit. The Word of God tells us in Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." You are not alone in this pain, even when it feels like God is distant. His nearness is not dependent on your circumstances or your emotions, but on His unchanging nature. The enemy would love for you to believe that your life is worse now, that you are worse off, but we declare that this is a lie. The Lord works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28), even when we cannot see the good yet. This season of suffering is not the end of your story; it is a refining fire meant to draw you closer to Him, not push you away.

You asked how someone can fall out of love so suddenly. The truth is, love, true, godly love, does not fade or disappear overnight. What you experienced was real and beautiful, but human love, no matter how pure, is still flawed and subject to the brokenness of this world. The man you loved may have been sincere in his feelings, but he is still a fallen creature, just as we all are. His decision to walk away does not diminish the love you shared or the value you hold in the eyes of God. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and your worth is not defined by his choice. The Lord sees you, cherishes you, and has a plan for your life that is greater than this pain.

We must also address the question of why God allowed this to happen. It is a question that has echoed through the hearts of believers for centuries, and the answer is not always clear in the moment. But we know this: God is sovereign, and nothing happens outside of His knowledge or permission. Even in this heartbreak, He is working. Perhaps He allowed this to protect you from something you cannot yet see. Perhaps He is using this to prepare you for a love that is even more aligned with His will. Or perhaps He is drawing you into a deeper dependence on Him, teaching you that He alone is the ultimate source of fulfillment. Whatever the reason, we trust that He is good, even when life is not.

You mentioned feeling far from God, and we want to gently remind you that He has not moved. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and He longs for you to run to Him, even in your anger, confusion, and sorrow. In Jeremiah 29:13, He promises, "You will seek me, and find me, when you search for me with all your heart." Do not let the enemy use this pain to drive a wedge between you and your Savior. Instead, let it be the very thing that draws you back into His arms. He is the only one who can truly heal this wound.

We also want to speak to the loneliness you feel. It is natural to long for companionship, for the Lord Himself said, "It is not good for the man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18). But we must caution you against allowing this longing to become an idol in your heart. The Lord is your bridegroom, your best friend, and your ultimate source of comfort. If you seek a spouse to fill the void that only God can fill, you will always be left wanting. But if you seek Him first, He will satisfy your soul, and in His perfect timing, He will provide a godly spouse who will cherish you as Christ cherishes the Church (Ephesians 5:25).

Now, we must address the despair that has led you to question whether you can bear being on this earth. These are not words to be taken lightly. The enemy would love to use this pain to isolate you, to make you believe that there is no hope. But we declare over you that your life has purpose, and your story is not over. The Lord has plans for you, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). You are not a speck; you are a beloved child of the Most High God, and He has numbered every hair on your head (Matthew 10:30). You matter deeply to Him, and He is not done writing your story.

We also want to gently correct the notion that God was not in this relationship. The fact that you both felt a prompting from the Lord does not mean it was a mistake. The Lord can use even broken relationships to shape us, teach us, and draw us closer to Him. But we must remember that human relationships, no matter how godly, are still subject to the free will of fallen people. The Lord may have allowed this relationship to happen for a season, but that does not mean it was meant to last forever. His ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9), and we must trust that He knows what is best, even when it hurts.

We rebuke the spirit of despair that has taken hold of your heart. The Lord did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7). We declare that you will not be overcome by this pain, but that you will rise from it stronger, wiser, and more dependent on the Lord than ever before. We rebuke the lies of the enemy that tell you your life is worse now, that you are worse off, that God has abandoned you. These are all lies from the pit of hell, and we command them to flee in the name of Jesus.

We also want to address the fact that your prayer did not mention the name of Jesus. There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). It is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father, and it is only by His blood that we are made whole. If you have never surrendered your life to Him, we urge you to do so now. Confess your sins, believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9). If you are already a believer, we encourage you to cling to Him now more than ever. He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), and He alone can heal this broken heart.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our sister who is in so much pain. Lord, You see her tears, You hear her cries, and You know the depths of her sorrow. We ask that You would draw near to her in this moment, that she would feel Your presence like never before. Comfort her with Your love, Lord, and remind her that she is not alone. Heal her broken heart, and bind up her wounds (Psalm 147:3). Restore to her the joy of Your salvation, and renew a steadfast spirit within her (Psalm 51:12).

Father, we ask that You would give her the strength to endure this season of suffering. Help her to trust in Your goodness, even when she cannot see it. Remind her that You are working all things together for her good, and that this pain is not the end of her story. Give her the courage to surrender her dreams, her desires, and her future into Your hands. Help her to seek You first, above all else, and to find her fulfillment in You alone.

Lord, we rebuke the spirit of despair that has taken hold of her heart. We declare that she will not be overcome by this pain, but that she will rise from it stronger and more dependent on You. We ask that You would surround her with godly community, with people who will speak life into her and remind her of Your truth. Protect her heart from bitterness, and help her to forgive this man, even as You have forgiven her.

Father, we ask that You would begin to heal her heart and prepare her for the future You have for her. Whether that future includes a godly spouse or a life of singleness devoted to You, we pray that she would trust in Your perfect plan. Help her to see that her worth is not defined by this relationship, but by the fact that she is Your beloved child.

We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above all names, the name by which we are saved and made whole. Amen.

In the days ahead, we encourage you to cling to the Lord like never before. Spend time in His Word, even when it feels dry and lifeless. Pour out your heart to Him in prayer, even when it feels like He is not listening. Worship Him, even when you do not feel like it. The Lord inhabits the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3), and He will meet you in that place of worship.

Surround yourself with godly community, people who will speak truth into your life and remind you of the hope you have in Christ. Do not isolate yourself, for the enemy would love to use this pain to keep you alone. But the Lord has given us the gift of fellowship, and we are stronger together than we are apart.

Finally, we encourage you to guard your heart from bitterness. It is natural to feel anger and resentment toward this man, but we must remember that bitterness is a poison that will only hurt you in the end. The Lord calls us to forgive, not because what he did was okay, but because we have been forgiven so much (Ephesians 4:32). Release him into the Lord’s hands, and trust that He will deal with him justly.

This season of pain will not last forever. The Lord is faithful, and He will restore what has been broken. Keep your eyes on Him, and trust that He is working, even when you cannot see it. You are not forgotten, you are not abandoned, and you are not alone. The Lord is with you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6).

We’ve read your words, and our hearts ache with you. The confusion and pain you’re feeling are so raw and real. After two years of love and peace, it is deeply disorienting to lose someone who felt like God’s gift, and it’s utterly normal to grieve a loss this significant. What you’re living right now is grief, and grief has its own storm of anger, sadness, loneliness, and even numbness. It doesn’t make sense on a timeline, and it doesn’t mean you have failed.

When grief gets this heavy, and especially when thoughts of not wanting to be here creep in, please don’t try to endure it alone. Is there a pastor, a trusted friend, or a Christian counselor you could tell honestly how dark things feel? Sometimes simply saying the words out loud to someone who will sit with you, without rushing to fix it, eases the pressure. Corporate worship, too, even when it feels empty, can quietly remind us we’re still held within a family of faith. It might not take away the loneliness right away, but it refuses to let you face it in isolation.

We know God feels far. Please know that doesn’t mean He has abandoned you. Your life matters infinitely, even in this confusing chapter. Let’s stop and ask Him to draw near.

Lord Jesus, hold her in her shatteredness. When she cannot feel You, be her steady anchor. Bring safe people to walk beside her, and slowly, gently, restore her hope. In Your name.

The column of your hope has been broken short with a "but." You expected to finish the sentence, "I will follow the Lord's leading into this life", when there came a heavy blow and now the column lies in pieces. But so let not your determination stand. Why will you say, "I did trust, but, ." Even now the danger is, when the bones get broken, the gangrene of despair may set in.

Yet I read of a God who sets no end whatever to the joy of those whose bones He has broken. "The bones which You have broken may rejoice," but how long? The answer is not given, for the rejoicing has no boundary. The Lord's hand that permits the fracture is the same hand that binds up the broken heart. I cannot see anywhere else that you can go except to destruction and despair, so let your soul say over again, "You are my God, you are my God." Others may have what they will, but you must have your God.

He will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, the place of loneliness, the place of need, and He will speak to her heart. The loneliness you feel is a narrow path where pilgrims march in single file. Yet somewhere on the road every Christian will find it. These very friends who now turn their backs, if they are good for anything, will respect you all the more for having walked honestly, and perhaps the day will come when through your example they will be led in the same obedient way. But if not, cure the loneliness by seeking heavenly company. The words of God's Book, made living to you, shall be to your mind the angels and God Himself shall have fellowship with you.

You ask why your life is worse now and why God allowed this. All things have an appointed place in God's plan, and nothing happens, after all, but what He permits or ordains. As surely as God's will is the axle of the universe, rest assured that He is King. The preservation and eternal glory of God's people rests upon His will, not upon the affections of a man, however good he seemed. Is it not foolish for a creature to feel that everything will fall out as he desires, that he can both propose and dispose, and has not to ask God's consent at all?

You want to be saved from this sorrow by something in yourself, by understanding it, by reconstructing what was shattered. But God says He will save you if you trust in Christ alone. If you will trust Jesus, as a soul must do who truly bears the character of having nothing, it will prove a change has passed over your spirit. Faith in Jesus will be the best evidence that you are reconciled to God, for the worst evidence of enmity is to dislike God's way when He empties us. Come then, though you are not only heart-broken but faith-broken, hope-broken, reduced to a palpitating mass of pain, will you trust Christ with your soul and ask no questions? You will often have to trust in this fashion in future life and, therefore, it is well to begin as you will have to keep on.

When a man has had such dealings with God and received mercy from Him, then his joy will be fuller of God than it ever was before. Let not your column stand broken with a "but." Trust Jesus; God wills it. If you will it, that is the sign that God wills it.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You feel as though the ground has been torn from beneath you, and in your agony you cry out that your life is worse now, that God abandoned you to this pain, that you are a speck that does not matter. But listen: the devil never despairs of your destruction, yet you are tempted to despair of your own salvation. Do not hand him such a victory. The very fact that this grief pierces you so deeply shows that your heart is alive, not dead. A conscience wounded by love lost is still a conscience that can be turned toward God. You say you were close to Him before, content in singleness, yet now He feels far away. But consider: it is not He who moved. The ache of this rupture has thrown a mist over your sight, but He remains where He has always been, waiting for you to press into Him through the storm.

You ask why God allowed you to meet this man, why He permitted a love that would later vanish. I cannot tell you all the hidden purposes of Providence, but I can tell you this: the promises of God are not nullified by one human failure. In Christ every promise of God is yes and amen, to the glory of God. You placed your trust in what you felt was a divine prompting, and that is not foolish. Even faithful Abraham, commanded to sacrifice his son, stretched out his hand to strike, but God stayed it. Not every trial is a final blow; often it is a testing that ends in deliverance. You cannot yet see how, but do not despise the wisdom that permits sorrow.

You say you are a speck and do not matter. But hear what the Lord blesses: the poor in spirit, the contrite heart, the one who trembles at His word. A broken and humbled heart God will not despise. It is not your strength He requires, but your humility. You are not forgotten; you are precisely the sort of soul the Good Shepherd seeks out when it has collapsed in the thorns. Do not believe the lie that your life has no worth because one human love has ended. Your worth is sealed by the blood of Christ, and no man’s departure can erase it.

You also ask how a man can fall out of love so suddenly, how someone who cherished you can become a stranger. I will not excuse inconstancy, but I remind you that the human heart is a wild tangle. Yet even there, you have a refuge: your own conscience testifies that you sought God in this, that you did not enter the relationship in careless sin. That integrity of heart is a comfort to you now, even if you cannot feel it. For the grace of God enables us to behave in this world with simplicity and godly sincerity, and that is a source of glorying inwardly, even when outward circumstances are miserable. You walked in the light, and though you now stumble in shadow, the light remains.

So I exhort you, not with harsh rebuke but with tender encouragement, as Scripture commands: comfort the feeble-minded, support the weak, be patient toward all. Do not despair. For how many have been pressed on every side, perplexed, pursued, yet not forsaken? The power of God is made perfect in our weakness. You feel you cannot bear being on this earth, but indeed you can, because His grace is sufficient. Even if you have no strength left to cling to Him, He clings to you.

And let me say one thing more: you have not fallen so far that you cannot return. Some have wandered to the very gates of hell and yet been recovered. God does not reproach you for your past trust, nor for your present anger and disbelief. When you come back to Him earnestly, He remembers the former sins no more. Do not let shame or bitterness keep you from crying out to Him with all the rawness of your heart. He would rather you rage and weep before Him than sit in silent despair.

Your life is not worse in truth, only in feeling. You are older, yes, and you carry a sorrow you did not have before. But that sorrow, offered to God, can become a sacrifice of a broken spirit. You are not the same as you were before you met him; you are more acquainted with grief, and therefore more able to be a fellow-worker with Christ in comforting others who suffer similarly. Paul counted his tribulations as a way of sharing in the kingdom. This very affliction, if you let it, can become a workshop of humility and reliance on God.

Therefore, do not turn back the clock in your mind. Do not curse the day you met him. Use this pain to drive you deeper into the only love that can never fail. Walk again in worship, even when you feel nothing. The feelings will follow in time, but faith must lead. And remember: God brought you through those two years, He was in them, though the outcome was not what you expected, and He is in this desolate moment now. You matter infinitely to Him, not because you are strong, but because He is merciful. Do not despair. The dawn will come.
