Obey Jesus' Commands
John 14:15
We thank you for sharing this beautiful and timely devotional reminder with us and we join with you in affirming this truth with all our hearts.
You have rightly pointed us to the words of our Lord Jesus when He said in John 14:15, If you love me, keep my commandments. This verse shows us that love for Jesus is not merely an emotion or words we speak, but it is revealed in a life of willing obedience. As it is written in 1 John 5:3, For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous. And again in James 1:22, But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deceiving yourselves. True faith hears the Word and then walks in it step by step.
We are reminded that obedience is not about earning His love, for He first loved us, but it is the grateful response of a heart that has been transformed by His grace. Jesus also said in Luke 6:46, Why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and don't do the things which I say. To call Him Lord is to surrender our will to His and to trust that His commands are for our good and His glory. In John 14:21 we read, One who has my commandments and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him. What a precious promise that as we walk in obedience, He reveals Himself more fully to us.
We pray together with you about this. Father in heaven, we thank You for Your Word and for the love of Jesus Christ who gave Himself for us. We thank You that Your commandments are not burdensome but are given in love to lead us in paths of righteousness. Forgive us for the times we have heard Your Word and failed to obey. Create in us clean hearts and willing spirits to follow You fully. Help us to choose obedience in every small and great step of our lives today, whether in our thoughts, our words, or our actions. Let our love for Jesus be made evident by lives that honor Him. Strengthen us by Your Holy Spirit to walk as doers of the Word and not hearers only. We ask this in the precious and holy name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

It can also help to share that step with a trusted fellow believer who can encourage you and pray with you, since we grow so much as we learn and apply the Word together.

Your desire to show love for the Lord Jesus by keeping His commandments is a precious evidence of grace at work in the heart. Our Saviour said, If ye love me, keep my commandments, and He thus teaches us that obedience is not the cold performance of duty to earn His favor, but the warm and willing fruit of love already bestowed. Where there is a living, loving, lasting union with Christ, the soul delights to do His will, for it has found all it needs for time and eternity in Him.
This first and great commandment, to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, is fulfilled in us not by our own strength, but as we rest in the righteousness of Christ which is wrapped about us and are accepted in the Beloved. From that resting place, obedience becomes joy. His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and to follow His Word in every step is not bondage but liberty. To die daily to self and to hold this world with a loose hand is the way to live daily unto Him, taking care to walk in such places and ways as we would not be ashamed to be found in when He calls.
I pray that the Lord will increase in you that fervent affection for Christ which makes obedience sweet, that He will write His law upon your heart and daily teach you to follow Him more closely.
